Why do you carry?

I am with Iggy and Dave. I spent my entire adult life wearing a badge and still do now as a security officer for a high end resort in Colorado. I made it through 36 years as an LE and then got in a gun fight with a crazy last fall in my present job, out in the middle of nowhere at my posh little resort! Go Figure. You just never know when or where it will happen.

I think Iggy and Dave pretty much summed up all of our feelings and I know for a fact that I can't add much to it. Great job, gentlemen.

I will add this, though. People have often said, "It's not the years, it's the miles." Well, let me tell you...I've got both...and many of the miles have been hard miles.

I'm old, I'm sore, and I'm tired. I'm too old to run, too sore to fight, and too tired to mess with some scumbag street thug who is trying to hurt or kill me or my family.

I've carried pretty consistently now for over thirty years and my age, physical aches and pains, and my rotten attitude just solidify my reason to still keep carrying.

There. That's my two cents worth, and it's probably not even worth that.

I would rather not answer that question. On a good day, the person who asks such a question is stupid, or, if young enough, actually ignorant but not stupid. Usually, however, there is some kind of derangement or delusion involved. It is usually difficult, at least for me, to get into an extended discussion without my opinion of the interrogator becoming clear. Occasionally I choose to let this happen. More often, I avoid having the question asked, or at least don't answer it.

If, for some reason, I feel that an answer is called for, probably the one given in post #27 by hyena is best: "Because when seconds count, the police are only minutes away."

Being a retired cop, I know most of the time they bust a gut, so to speak, to get to the scene. But there are only so many, and might not be so close, and will need to be called, as only SOME criminals are stupid enough to commit crimes in front of an officer.

Using my immunology metaphor, depending on the police to protect you is like only immunizing left handed blonde women with the O negative blood type. Why NOT everyone who is able?

Mule Packer sed,

This is source of the old saying, "Don't mess with an old man, He'll just kill you.

Average police response time is 10 to 12 minutes .. in my area of the county it can be much closer to 20 minutes or longer ..

In an emergency are you willing to wait that long to respond to someone trying to harm you ??
