Why do you own an M&P15?

Why an AR? Is there anything more user friendly than an AR? You can make it yours. Change the grip, sights or optics, dress it up with 20 lbs. of attachments, or keep it plain jane. The choices are yours. Why a S&W? Short of using it to chop down a tree, I know it will function if and when I need it to. S&W has been in the firearms game a long, long time. They know how to make a something worth having.

It is a great gun! I have 2. One for me and one for my wife. we do alot of target shooting. For home defense we have .40cal jhp pistols at each end of the house.

A sport rifle for home defense is rather large to move in tight spaces, and the small hi powered .223 bullet can travel along way.

We just want home defense not neighborhood defense, well not yet at least. we will see.

An oft repeated fallacy. The 5.56/.223 actually penetrates less layers of wall board and other common building materials than a 9mm and other common handgun rounds.

If you ever get the chance try it at one of your next shooti ng sessions. Just rig up a board to hold up numerous pieces of drywall and shot them with said sample rounds. You'll be amazed.

In my opinion after doing some research on the subject, if you're looking for a firearm specific for home defense, I would first consider a 12ga shotgun loaded with either #4 or 00 buck depending on the size of your domicile. Using a rifle for home defense is risky due to over-penetration. Those high velocity rounds could easily pass through several walls if you miss.

I purchased my AR as part of a larger firearm strategy of our emergency planning and home defense. That strategy includes shotgun, pistols and plinker. Like tools in a tool box, a different tool for a different job.

I chose the M&P 15 Sport because it met all of my requirements at a very reasonable price. My Sport is well constructed, shoots accurately and will undoubtedly perform for a very long time with regular care and maintenance. If my needs required it, I could easily modify my rife. I am extremely happy with my purchase after having examined and shot other rifles like RRA, Noveske, Daniel Defense and LMT.

No regrets here. :)

Not to hijack the thread, but anyone living with anyone else in their home really should use a round designed for IN home defense( a frangible round). Grave, if you do just a bit of research, you will find that even #8 birdshot will go thru several layers of sheetrock from 30' away. And a 30' shot in a house? That's a long shot, at least in the common styles of houses around here.
As far as the use of of a .223 caliber rifle as home defense, Sure, get home defense rounds designed for the job. As with not penetrating as many layers of sheetrock or wallboard, two layers is two too many. That bullet has still gotten into the next room and I'm not Superman, I can't see thru walls. With that said, I know a 50gr Nosler Varmint sitting over 25grs. of CFE 223 will go thru a 4x4 wood post no problem.

In short, most Firearms work, just use a Frangible round. Sorry to everyone for jacking the thread.

^^^^ NOT what he said.

If you want to penetrate a bad guy who will probably be wearing clothes in your house, and you want to penetrate 10" into his bad-guy body, the round you choose had better do just that.

And ANY ROUND that will penetrate into Mr. Bad Guy will EASILY blow right through drywall whether you are wearing your x-ray goggles or not.

My flipping BB gun will go through a sheet of drywall.

Any of the modern defense cartridges manufactured today will easily blow through several sheets of drywall. That's just the way it has to be.

Sorry.

Because it makes Pelozzi and Cumo nervous, I have to get some payback one way or the other. I have been nervous for 4 1/2 years now.:D
Asking this question is like asking why I cc.

I don't have it yet but it will be shipping hopefully tomorrow. I like the "because I can" responses. Also the versatility of it. I doubt I would have bought one by summer until all this mess started. I am not very good when I feel the govt is trying to control what I can and can't do. So it gave me all the incentive to just get it now. You would think the govt would understand this.

I just purchased 2 of them (his and hers) because of their name and reputation. I've only heard good things about the M&P 15. plus my 15-22 is an absolute blast to shoot.

I got my Sport mainly because of name & reputation. Had already liked the quality of the M&P 40 that I got earlier. After reading the specs & the comments on the 1-8 5R melonite barrel, here on the forum, I started looking but no one had any in town. Went on GB, found what I wanted(almost-it was CA compliant but I fixed that right away) and had it in my hands in less than a week. At the time(May) I thought the price was fair, but by today's prices, I stole it!

For me it was a protest buy. Never wanted one before the anti-constitutional nit-wits decided to not let a crisis go to waste, so I decided to make my voice heard and couldn't think of a better way to do it. Now that I have one, I think i need to send a louder message, and will likely buy another! ;)

Like others, I had a feeling the AWB was going to get out of hand. Back in October I took the plunge and picked up a M&P Sport for $712. Added MOE forearm and Hogue grip. I'm usually a M1 Carbine and Garand guy - love wood. I began thinking if ammo dried up (oh, I have 1,000 rds carb and 3,000 '06) who would have ammo? LEO and military. So, my logic was at least someone would still have bullets for my AR. Having an A2 in the Army brought back some good memories. Funny how learning tricks to clean that weapon comes back to you. Oh, and the foreward assist, never had to use it.

It was on my list of guns to buy eventually... then the government said I "shouldn't have one" = moved right to the top of my purchase list. (along with the 16 total 30 round PMAGs I was told I also "can't have").

Like others, I don't like being told what I can / can't do by politicians. Especially those that are only interested in helping themselves.

After I shot my nephews OR I just had to have one, and then I read about the Sport, I knew the barrel had the possibility to be accurate but I was really looking at $639 for a brand new MSR. I took it out shooting and within 2 weeks I was putting scopes on it, and then more powerful scopes and then even more powerful scopes. I figured out I couldnt put too much scope on the rifle but the more powerful they became I started loosing close in ability so thats when I backed down to 6-24 from an 8-32.

I bought one because I like and I'm familiar with the AR platform and the Sport was too good a deal to pass up when Academy had one in stock the day I happened to be in the store. Even before the 'gun craze', the Sport was hard to find when it came out. It has not disappointed me yet and it's the best $650 I've spent on a firearm.

They are fun as hell to shoot. And tons of fun dressing them up like a modern day grow mans barbie!! Although many of our wives would disagree, as would our wallets!!
