Why I don't Open Carry

I can tell you in no uncertain terms that gun owners are not all pro 2A.

Heck, polling indicated in Washington that half of gun owners sided with Bloomberg and his Hags Demand Action group on mandatory background checks. Start a thread here about Constitutional Carry or even just the notion of government not requiring mandatory training and watch the fuss commence. You should have heard the whining and crying by the guys at my gun club over Guns in Bars. The notion that gun owners are all pro 2A is perhaps one of the biggest myths to be posted on a gun forum, ever.

I'd say you are correct. I was likely projecting in my previous post. I like to think most gun owners and members of gun forums are pro 2A, but that's not always the case.

(snip)IMO, demonstrating your gun rights by carrying openly is a slow monotonous process. Almost a waste of time. We should instead concentrate on gun safety. The rest will come later.

I can share one instance where open carry education (my word) happened rather quickly. Spanaway Wa. 2010. A few OC "activists" got together at a business that was OC friendly. They hung around in a parking lot for a while, pistols on hips, a couple ARs slung. County Sheriff folks showed up. Responding to "man with a gun" report. Deputies checked IDs. Talked a while. OC folks were asked to move along. They did... to another parking lot. Deputies then asked the group to break up. They did.
The next weekend, the OC folks were back at the first business. No LE showed up. Though the group was not asked to move, they did anyway. They moved to the second business, as the week before. No LE showed up.
The question I always had was... If it was proper for Deputies to check out the OC group week one... why not week two. Conversely, if not week two... then why week one. Anyway, the idea of Open Carry got a lot of attention. Lots of news coverage. Though there are still OC activists around, it hasn't made the news much lately. Except for a couple months back when some OC folks decided to OC in the State Capitol. LE was cool. The law makers freaked!

And I still think the guys walking around with Rambo rigs are idiots. And the tool in the video looks like he's about 4 months pregnant.

That really is what it comes down to for you isn’t it? Open carry just pisses you off. It’s purely emotional there’s no reasoning involved you can’t come up with a cogent argument against it you just don’t like it.

You can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into to begin with

4 months pregnant? And nothing about the guy waddling across the street towards the end, doing his interpretation of hands up don't shoot, looking 8 1/2 months pregnant? ;)

Chuck Schumer says he supports the 2A and the right to keep and bear arms..... but I digress.
Actually you're spot-on. A lot of politicians claim they support the 2nd. They don't support the text or the spirit; they support what they want to believe the 2nd says. We see that here as well; police officers who claim they represent the law, enforce the law, and support the 2nd. Whatever you do, don't try to obey the law and exercise your 2nd rights- that makes them cringe. Don't expect a hunter to stand with you when they want to ban the AR-15- they'll snort and say that nobody needs 30 rounds in a gun.

Remember, what has always worked is to slowly take away rights by dividing the community into factions. This camp doesn't support that camp, soon there's nobody left standing to stand with you. It works- it's documented- they keep trying to do it here.

The question you need to ask yourself is; am I a divider or a supporter? Do I like people carrying an AK47 into the legislature and posing with it at-the-ready? No, I think it's silly. But you know what? I don't worry about it. That sort of OC isn't sustainable- in other words you cannot live that way from day to day. Pretty soon they'll feel silly and move on to something else. I just put the holster on my belt, stuff the gun inside it, and move about my day just like everyone else. But....now I digress.... :p

I find it rather ironic, maybe even funny how we argue amongst ourselves over carrying a gun.

There are those of us who will never agree either for or against open carry.

And those of you that are pro open carry, why waste your time here? Trying to prove a point? Trying to make yourself feel better about it? There are other forums concerning open carry.

Let me guess. You have an agenda right? So what does that agenda accomplish here? Again, a waste of time.

And those of us against open carry. Why waste your time?

Most of us that carry have already thought through the process. We don't need our minds changed either way.

The difference is this. It's a regional issue depending on demographics. So far the only LOGICAL reason for open carry is to further protect our gun rights. Great. Have at it.

But in the area I live, I don't want any part of it. I don't need the hassle either from cops or the gun hating public.

As stated in my previous post, the issue is GUN SAFETY. If we would stop shooting ourselves or others due to negligence and leaving our guns out for our children to get at we wouldn't have a problem.

The gun hating public hates guns because they are afraid of them. And they are afraid of us when they see in the news how dangerous we can be to ourselves and each other.

Want to change their mind? Force feeding them with open carry isn't the solution. Gun safety is. Invite one to go shooting with you. Educate them when they have an open mind. Not when they are staring at the gun in your holster.

Open carry doesn't piss me off in general. Depending on the area and the surroundings, it's perfectly logical and appropriate. A guy standing with an AR slung over his shoulder at an Obama rally or a Handgun in a holster on his hip is not the same as the guy fishing or hiking in the woods.

As for the guy in the park, he was looking for a confrontation and he got one. Yeah, the cop was unaware of the legality of open carry, which just goes to show how rare it must be in that area. Thank God for the "pioneer".

It's Easter morning. Kids are opening eggs and we gott get ready to go to church in my OC legal, gun friendly state. Wonder how many guns I see today? Wanna bet ZERO?

Plenty of reasons behind my opinion. You just choose to ignore them. There is no tangible "proof" that supports either argument. When you Ask an OC person why they do it, it's the same "this is my right". It's my right to protest at a military funeral. To hold up signs calling the dead soldier a murderer. To tell the grieving family their loved one is in Hell. Who here supports that? And if you do, how would you feel if it was one of your loved one?

Personally, I think that anybody who has the time to stand on a street corner for hours at a time trying to "educate" people could be making better use of their time. The Park Pioneer could be in a gym, for example.

It’s purely emotional there’s no reasoning involved...

Emotion and irrational fear doesn't require fact. It requires fantasy to support it. That's why you'll hear a lot of tangled assertions from those who hopelessly attempt to rationalize and blame their suffering on others.

The three biggies --

Hoplophobia is a malady many suffer, both gun owners and not.

Some folks in positions of authority simply resent the fact that others are allowed to carry a sidearm in the open. They feel it threatens their authority.

Some folks never quite get over the self conscious feeling that everyone is looking at them when carrying a gun. Pretty common for most folks when they first start carrying, but most get over it. Some never do. The thought of carrying a gun in the open where it can be seen is simply too frightening to consider.

Frightened, threatened and suffering an array of emotional discomfort, they lash out at others.

off topic...

There is nothing "ironic" about folks having a lively discussion about gun carry issues in a gun carry discussion forum.

An example of ironic might be someone posting a lengthy lecture about folks wasting their time posting. ;)

...back on topic

Come on, man. You know that isn't always the case. Some murders are planned. Others are just spontaneous due to anger, and some are loony toons. given your rationale, why aren't cops killed EVERYDAY in high crime areas? THOUSANDS of guns taken off the streets everyday. THOUSANDS of homicides in these high crime areas. I worked one of the worst neighborhoods in NYC. Over 2500 murders a year when I came on. Cops getting shot was still an irregularity.

Strap on that Iron and stroll down Main Street if you want. It's your right.

Hey, it's my right to protest a military funeral and call the dead soldier a baby killer. Tell the grieving parents their son is in hell Or a police funeral. Wonder how many here would approve of that?[/QUOTE]

Sir,
If'n you want to protest funerals and do those other things you alluded to...

Surely ye jest...You'd wouldn't really do that, would you?

Well there you have it...

A young man in Grand Rapids walking home along the sidewalk in his neighborhood minding his own business while exercising his 2A rights... somehow conjures up comparisons to protesting military funerals and calling soldiers baby killers. Classic.

I have carried legally since 1975 in S.C. There was a trial period then to see if there would be blood in the streets. What they found out was that it was THE most obeyed law in the state. Never a problem, NEVER. Fast forward to today and there are over 300,000 issues in S.C. My number is 14XX. I have been told this could be one of the lowest in circulation when all factors are figured in. Now figure what a small population S.C. has and then the parameters of age and it is certain we are one of the most heavily armed populations in the U.S. Still NO problems! We are by nature a lawful group. Would we be any LESS lawful carrying openly? These things usually work themselves out. As for me and our group, we would like to see Open Carry. A choice is what it is all about.

Open carry with a carry permit is legal where I live. Aside from the risks involved with some thug seeing an opportunity I don't want to end up with an article like this in the paper. This is from a small town newspaper near my town that publishes a weekly Police Blotter . This is in a county that has a reputation for being very pro self defense. It worked out OK but I don't want the hassle.

March 14

4:42 p.m. Suspicious person. 7th Street N. A report was made regarding a male carrying a gun into a residential building. Officers found the male had a carrying license and no action was needed

So, 7shooter, as the OP, where have you been?
If you are going to post a topic of discussion that will result in a lengthy exchange of ideas, you should come back to the thread.

Everyone else, I think we've been trolled.

Happy Easter from south of the Mason-Dixon.......

Gonna sport my nickel RM in a fancy rig today. ;):D
Do you have special 'Holiday' rigs yet?
Pastel ovals for Easter, Tooled Flags for Flag Day and 4th of July, (or tooled starbursts for the 4th) Green tint leather with colored light shapes and 'balls' for Xmas?
One could truly accessorize. :D

Phil, that's it precisely. When anti second amendment fear mongers use terms like ignoramus, hogs leg, strapped on, phrases like "guns taken off the streets" statements that infer that a planned murder isn't insane behavior and compare unoffensive behavior to repulsive bullying... Why bother arguing with a fool? It's Bloomburg lingo.
They should certainly be grateful to live in a country that is tolerant enough to allow them. Perhaps they will someday learn that culture isn't as important as the Constitution.
