Why I work part time at a gun shop

There's just something not right about someone so happy about exploiting someone for personal gain?

Your opinion. Do you always pay full asking price and if it is low inform the seller you think he could sell it for more? Car dealers must love you.

The gun shop did not "exploit" anyone. The guy wanting to trade did it to himself. There was absolutely nothing stopping the guy from saying no to the shops offer and going somewhere else, putting an ad on Gunbroker, or any other medium that allows gun sales. I have no doubt he lust for the different gun overrode any concern or care he had about the trade in value.

Conducting Private Sales of a Firearm in Tennessee

In the state of Tennessee, individuals who are not engaged in the business of dealing in firearms are not required to obtain a criminal background check in connection with the occasional sale or private transfer of a firearm. He could have legally sold it face to face in Tennessee if he has chose to

According to the Tennessee Office of Attorney General, Tennessee has no specific provisions of law governing private transactions or transfers between two individuals who are not federal firearms licensed dealers.

In all likely hood he could have placed an ad in the local paper classifieds. I see ads in ours all the time, but rarely for sale, usually looking for. i have seen several ads on the local face book market place for things like .223 hole punches. LOL

Guns, cars, motorcycles tools, tvs, boats and everything else you can think of are pawned, bought and sold every day way below market.

jeed, in the second picture is that a High Standard Sentinel Deluxe on the lower right? If so, other than the bobbed hammer, it's identical to the first handgun I got over 50 years ago. I know because I had just turned 21!

The two Smiths are certainly very cool, but the little HS may be the sleeper of the bunch. It would bring close to what you paid for all three, and if you consider the value of the Chiefs Special, the cost of the scope and HS are approaching a negative number.

When asked why he charged so much for his guns, the owner of an LGS replied "I have to pay the rent." My friend retorted "Yeah, but you don't have to pay it all on this sale!"

Not around here, you'd be hard pressed to get much more than $200, bobbed hammer and all...

I'm just trying to figure out why someone who doesn't value a particular item as highly as I do should be called a "dummy."

OTOH, I've been guilty of buying a gun I didn't really want or need just because I thought the price was lower than it should be. If that doesn't quality as "dumb," I don't know what does.

I can beat that stupidity and up it!
I've bought guns just because I had the ammo or holster for them.
Now, that's ignorance.

The LGS paid $300 but they put it in the case for $429. I don't see that as taking advantage. Maybe if they paid $300 and put it out for $1300 you could argue they took advantage. The guy wanted a Glock more than the 686 and did what he had to to expedite a sale. I'm not feeling sorry for him.

Re looking at the picture from the Op's original post. Not so much they were taking advantage of a customer but out of touch of gun values in general. To have that gun with a selling price of only $450. is a head scratcher anywhere in the country. I have to assume he was only asking $150 for the model 60.To quote the OP, why cant I live close to a Dummy gun shop like this.

That's what I was thinking. None of the shops in Des Moines, Iowa would have had those retail prices 5 years ago. Today the prices would be near double.

I bought a 686 5 years back from an online auction for $400 bucks + 20% buyers fee + shipping + FFL fee and still paid at least $100 under the going rate.

Read my second post I cleared that up

At $429 I'd buy 10 of them. I'm trying to figure out why that price was so low. It's a 45% mark up. But still u can't get a beat up model 10 for $429

Nice finds. Nothing unethical going on here though. Just business. I've traded some pistols for less than they were worth to get something else I wanted. No big regrets now.

I find it hard to believe any reputable gun shop would take advantage of their customers like that, at least I hope not.

That's the funniest thing I've read all month and it's the last day of the month!

I've never had ANY gun shop offer me anything near a fair price for a gun. I understand a guy has to make a profit but paying me 25% or 30% of their selling price? Please.

I've never gotten less than 75% of their selling price. I always tell them what I want to get.
