I picked up this used 442-1 (sn CBP73xx) and have no idea why the cylinder is US Army green. The gun appears to be in 98+% original condition and I can't find any info concerning green cylinders in my reference books. Any help would be appreciated.

There are a number of teflon-based and teflon-like aftermarket gun finishes that can be had in just about any color desired. That is likely what you have.

Buff,
Thanks for the refinish info. I am puzzled by WHY someone would refinish the cylinder only on a gun that is in 98/99% condition. I checked the cylinder with a magnet and verified that it is steel.

It's not ripe yet. Put it back out in the sun for awhile.

I don't know, but I do know that it's not easy being green. Just ask Kermit.

You guys are killing me

I heard that Kermit has swine flu I hope the picture of him lying in an alley is a fake

I sent my 642 off to Walter Birdsong for a Black-T finish a few weeks ago. I'll post some pics when I get it back.

I'm not sure why anyone would make it green, but I like my carry guns to be black for "tactical" purposes so that's why I had mine done.

But you know, with some of the quality coming out of S&W nowadays, they might have made it green by accident..

kinda makes you wonder where/how the guy carried it.... ewwww.

Looks like MOLD. Send it to me and I will remediate the mold. The price you ask? Cheap, I fix, you give the pistol to me. LOL

I had hoped to get more useful technical information when I started this thread, however, it appears to have taken a Monty Python turn. In that spirit, I will share the actual reason for the green cylinder with you. According to the ranges' video tape of me shooting, I pick my nose and wipe my fingers on the cylinder after each shot. It looks like it's snot the reasons that some of you suggested.
