Why are they pushing "Gun Control" when they should be pushing "Law Enforcement"?

Your asking a question as if the opposition wants to actually solve a problem instead of forwarding an agenda.

It's not about gun control; it's about control period. They want to control every aspect of citizens lives. When and what to eat. What and when to watch TV. Where and when you can travel. What you can own. What you can't own.

Those pushing "gun control" have figured out the reason for the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution, and fear it greatly. As previously stated, it is about control - of everybody and everything - and that pesky 2nd Amendment poses a serious threat to those who would convert our country to a socialistic dictatorship.

I believe its about control....because none of the legislation will do anything to prevent another Sandy Hook. Even expanding background checks....will do nothing to help the mentally disturbed...that are not being treated, are not in the system, and are not going to be treated....because there is no money to help them....so nothing will change....and we will have another Sandy Hook unless we take steps to protect our children at school from disturbed people by using "common sence" actions like eliminating gun free zones, and using police or ex military or trained guards to protect the schools.
If this was about preventing another Sandy hook, we would need to do somethig to help the mentally disturbed folks and take action to prevent criminals from killing our children.
We have money to help Egypt and Pakistan...but none to help the folks at home that really need it. (I am getting off track) so I believe that this is all about taking as much of our second amendment as they can get ....so they are free to push their agenda and put citizens in a position where we can do nothing about it. A government that fears its armed citizens......is a government to be feared and watched closely.

Because it is one heck of a lot easier to blame and control law abiding citizens than it is criminals who could care less IMHO be it guns or anything else.

Why?

Because we are allowing it.

Because "we" have become fat, lazy and complacent. Because we CONTINUE to sit back while THEY violate the Constitution at every turn. And mostly because the Progressive / Marxists mind can't comprehend free people governing themselves. Their view is that government knows what's best for you and your family. Not you.

Until we are ALL disarmed, it is harder for them to enforce that edict. So they're working on it hard. And making a LOT of progress I must add.

Maybe they could relate the language of gun control and universal background checks to the national debt, and try and fix that one, with as much speed as they're trying to destroy the 2A.

I don't think there is any one answer to the question of "why?" There are people who just want to impose their will on others, there are people who truly think they know better than others, and then there are people who really want to do something to help...but the latter group doesn't really understand the problem, or that background checks wouldn't have stopped any of these tragedies.

Typically, people just want to do "something" when confronted with a horrific situation...hoping to "feel good" that they took action. It's easier to blame background checks and put them in place, than it is to address the psychological issues and mental health problems that lead to the violence in this country, which is a far more complex situation.

It's like the joke about the drunk who was looking all over the ground underneath a floodlight in the parking lot of a bar at closing time. The bartender came out after locking up, saw the drunk, and went over to ask what was going on. The drunk said he had dropped his keys and couldn't find them, so the bartender decided to help. After diligently searching the ground and finding nothing, the bartender asked the drunk if he was sure he lost his keys in that spot...the drunk said no, he had dropped his keys in the other part of the parking lot, where his car was parked. The bartender asked, "Then why in the heck are you looking for them here?" The drunk replied, "The light is better here."

Those who advocate background checks are in the dark, and they aren't looking for solutions in the right area.

Wonderful and productive conversation. Allow me to add some suggestions. Summarizing previous input: why? because they want to disarm population. What for? Yes to be in control. What for they need this control? Here we have multiple answers. I think, they have something in works that will not be popular, to the point of revolt of law abiding population. Logic says this population has to be disarmed beforehand. Criminals don't have to be disarmed, they will help to implement the changes (see Germany and Russia history). That's 1st possibility.
Somebody mentioned our budget. Here is something I'd like to know more about: "The measure would make it a crime to buy guns on behalf of individuals legally barred from possessing guns and would make it explicitly illegal to traffic two or more guns if a person had "reasonable cause" to believe a crime would be committed with any of those firearms. Violations would be punishable by fines, property forfeiture and prison sentences of up to 25 years." Source: Bipartisan Gun Control Agreement Announced On Background Checks (UPDATE: NRA To Score Vote). Which property will be forfeited? Just the guns? Or the vehicle also? Or also the house? That would take care of the budget in no time. After all, why would you need a house when Big Brother takes care of you for 25 years? That's the second possibility.
Please remember, we have to feed about 55% of world's lawyers. We can't do it without creating adequate number of criminals. That's the third.
And now I tell you how it was in the Soviet block. Hand guns were in possession of police and higher military (on duty). Unlawful possession of any firearm - 5 years, possession of a knife longer than 4" (or one hand operated) - 3 years. Man could be stopped and searched without reason, on foot or in a car. Whole criminal law was about 300 pages in a pocketbook format. Lawyers hard to find and useless. From arrest to sentence rarely more than 2 weeks. Just to think of it, the multitude of our lawyers might preserve some of our freedoms, if not for our sake than for the sake of their well-being.
All which had to be done to prevent Newtown massacre was for mom to follow the law and keep her guns locked. The only logical response from lawmakers would be to increase penalties for people who don't take care of their guns.
"Every nation deserves it's government" - some old Greek's observation.

Expanded background checks will not stop the mentally disturbed people. #1...most of them are not in the system....why? They can't afford treatment. They are not in the system and will not be picked up. Our new health care system will do nothing for those people that need help....money for that is non existant...so the mental health issue will not be fixed...and expanded background checks will not pick them up. Nothing has changed. This is not about protecting our children and its shameful that these folks that lost children are being "used" by the admistration that really cares nothing for their pain.
I do believe the end game is to remove firearms from our society...if they can infringe a little this time...then they can infring a little more next time...until they are gone, and they will use any excuse to prohibit us from having them. Make speeding a "crime" and none of us would qualify for a firearm...thats extreme...but thats an example of how this can happen.
The problem they have is....there are millions of "We the People" that will not give them up...no matter what unconstitutional law they try to pass...because we would be surrendering our freedom to people that I would not trust to care for my dog (think a lot of the Dog).
They can not take our freedom.....we would have to agree to "surrender" it. And that is the problem they are going to face. They do not have the ability to take our freedom....and no written unconstitutional law can do that. Taking our freedom is a price they will not be willing to pay and even if they were willing....they do not have the means to do it. The numbers are on our side and we do have our arms.
This administration has the best gun salesman of the century as their leader...why? because people have no intention of giving up their freedom to this government or any other government and many are prepared to resist any attempt to take our freedom or guns.
I would like to think that could never happen here and 6 years ago...I would have thought it even impossible to be a thought in this country that was founded on liberty and individual freedom for every citizen. In my 65 years, I have never seen an attack on the second amendment and our Constitution that I have seen since our new administration.
This will not stand or be tolerated by free men......hopefully...the system will work and checks and balances will work and this will go away....because the alternative will not be pleasent or anything any of us want to see and its a box that any intelligent elected offical does not want to open. I do believe, hope and pray that this will end peacefully and with our freedom in tact.
I do believe that history can repeat itself....and we only have to see what is happening to this country. Wake up America.
