They said on FB earlier this is to fill void between their 2 lines. So sigma is going nowhere.

S&W may start out with all 3 models on the market, but if the M&P keeps selling strong and the new SD starts to outsell the Sigma, the Sigma's day may be numbered. We'll see.

the new sd is a brand new model and an addition to the sigma lineup. so when s&w puts the sd on its website, it will be found under the sigma category. right now, s&w has no plans on removing the ve series sigma from its lineup (this is fact from sw).

i personally believe that smith and wesson is throwing out rebates and will be relieving itself of inventory over the next year. within two years the ve will no longer be available but the sd will (this is my opinion).

so s&w is not lying by saying this is "just an addition to the sigma lineup" as of now. but i think its obvious whats going on and you can mark my words on this one.

Via Facebook, "The SD9 and SD40 will make their first public appearance at the NRA Annual Meetings and Exhibits, May 14 - 16 in Charlotte, NC. Smith & Wesson, Booth#1627."

workshop-where you getting all your inside info, know a guy that has a friend that used to know the guy?

In my opinion, no. The M&P will be the top of the line in service autos, the SD line will be "designed for home- and self-defense" and the SIGMA will continue to be the intro type pistol.

The advertising brochure certainly markets the three pistols as for three different purposes, and at three different price points.

They sell a boat load of SIGMAs, so why would they discontinue the SIGMA.

Finally, there are three levels of trigger action to choose from: M&P has short reset, and light - 6.5 pounds. SD series is long, therefore, perceived to be safe under stress, trigger at a still controllable 8 pounds (same weight as Glock's NY-1 trigger), and SIGMA - long and very heavy - 13 or so pounds.

So, unless SIGMA sales just tank, I cannot see why the SIGMA would be discontinued. Just my thoughts.

SETXN - just to respond to your comment. I got my information directly from Smith & Wesson personell. not a "friend of a friend."

it was from my contact (a current s&w employee and family member). he is the one who gave me this up to date info.

but i guess for the un trusting people...you will just have to wait to find out.

but you dont want to wait then you dont have to take listen to me. you try calling smith and wesson and ask them about the new sd. They will refer to it as the "sigma." Even a customer service or retail rep at s&w will confirm this now. you dont need a friend/family there to confirm this. go ahead and give s&w a call yourself for info first instead of just calling me a lier and speculating.

then you can tell me if the info is still bogus.

this is not like that telephone game setxn. this info is straight from the horses mouth.

this information on the sd will be available on the s&w site by july at the latest.

side note-the sigma is not being discontinued as of now. The sd is an ADDITION to there sigma lineup. so if they ever do discontinue the ve they will still have the sd in s&w sigma's category.

for all of you that are more trusting, i hope this information helps give you a bit more insight on what smith and wessons plans are for the future concerning there sigma line.

No matter what S&W says the MSRP of the VE series and the M&P are, the actual selling prices in my experience are about $350 for the VE (they seem to have crept up in the last year) and about $525 for the M&P. Assuming that the SD is priced to land between them, that means a selling price around $425-$450. That is not a huge difference either way, the low end awfully close to the VE, the high end only slightly less than a good deal on a M&P.

I have no doubt the SD will sell, even positioned between the VE and M&P, but the real question is: to what extent? I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the VE get phased out if the SD does well and VE sales decline as a result. The SD looks to be exactly what the VE should have been to being with anyway.

On the other hand, if the VE sticks around and gets a price cut back to the $275-$300 range, then it makes a lot more sense to have all three models available, especially if the SD can be had for at least $100 less than the M&P.

I am in the market. I need one for downstairs. Just wish it will take Sigma mags.

By what I saw in the pics, I don't think the mags can fit.

They said on FB earlier this is to fill void between their 2 lines. So sigma is going nowhere.

So the gun would cost between $400-450? I see this gun failing fast if thats the case. People would just save the extra 100 and get the Sigma or spend the extra 100 and get the M&P. Plus its not SA/DA.

i don't see it failing. I think it will do extremely well. I think that in the $400 marked it will compete quite well. I see a lot of people who still believe the sigma is crap and don't have the money for a M&P. Or you have people like me who love everything Smith and will buy one just to have. I love my M&P and I love my Sigma so I imagine I will love the SD.

workshop-if you will reread my post I didn't call you a liar,I,m not untrusting just skeptical. Just wondering where you got your info-there is so much speculation, rumor and BS on the web that a little validation every now and then is nice. Thanks for the response on where it came from.

Take a look at post #20. I got nearly the same info when I talked to S&W the other day.

There will always be a place for the Sigma, being a quality low priced gun. The SD duo is a more refined version that offers qualities of the M&P's without the pricetag, so I expect big sales (I know there'll be one in my cabinet).

It looks like the Crimson Trace for the Sigma will transfer over to the SD, so it's going to be even more of a boost for them. I would also bet the Sigma mags would work, the actual SD mags look to have a baseplate more like the M&P as the only obvious difference.

While they're at it, S&W would be well advised to think about an SDc (compact).
