Winter is finally on the way...

Like rubibranch said, Utah hasn't had an awful lot of snow this winter, but we've had some storms come through in the last couple days with more expected throughout this week. I have about seven cords of hardwood left in my woodshed, enough for the next year and more. The wood stove has been perking away for the last few days keeping the ol' homestead cozy.

I don't mind winter at all. In fact, now that I'm retired and don't have to go driving into work everyday, I enjoy sitting by the fire with a good book, watching the snow pile up outside the window.

The older I become the less I like winter. Today here in NW Arkansas it is
another cloudy, bleary, dreary, day. Give me spring.
We have had a couple days of winter wonderland, that's enough for me.

I left NE Ohio hoping to never experience the "lake effect" ever again. When I spent my first winter in Carlisle, PA on the other side of the Appalachian Mountains I was amazed that it was December in a northern state and I didn't have snow up to my knees.

We came close to needing the AC this afternoon. Going to get chilly in a day or so but lows are only supposed to get to around 40. Still waiting for a good artic front here in SE Texas. Would like to see a couple days with highs below freezing to get rid of a bunch of the fleas and mosquitos.

We are getting some lite snow today. I think we have already gone thru three cords with five cords split and stacked. I have a 27 ton log splitter, doesn't take long to split the wood, longer to stack it. Wood is our primary heat, but do have a backup furnace, just not as economical. More snow predicted in the next days.

We haven't even had winter here yet. Ridiculously mild and out has all the recent immigrants thinking they are now living in Shangri La. Fools.
Maybe next year.
We spent the weekend at the ranch. Mrs. Chukar took advantage of the fact my low back is acting up and I am not able to walk more than a 1/4 mile without my rump and left leg crampoing up something fierce.
No way to take the pointers out and chase quail so some light duty projects around the lodge.
We arrived Friday evening and the wood fireplace insert never quit running until this afternoon about 3 hours before we left for home.
Farmer over there told me this weekend that if they do not get more and a lot more moisture before spring they will be out of irrigation water by July. Tough row to hoe that one.

We did the hydraulic splitter thing this past weekend and got all our wood in place. We rented one this past weekend and got everything cut, stacked and secured. Getting it Saturday afternoon and returning it Monday morning for $82 seemed okay-curious to know how that would compare elsewhere? Whatever, we are ready for whatever winter throws at us and glad you are, too!

I have a friend with a splitter, so he brings it over we split and stack for an afternoon, and I buy his lunch the next week.

But he and I also have a "Pay it forward" account, in the fall we go around and split firewood for "Shut ins" from our respective churches.

Since our move 6 years ago, I don't have the ability to burn firewood, but my friend and I still make the rounds helping others!

This is about the only reason I look forward to winter.
Grooming snowmobile trails is an awesome job that I really love doing.

The big problem last year and it looks like again this year is there's not enough snow down lower to unload the snowcat so we can't get up on top where there is snow.

This is looking to be the second year in a row that I wont be getting out and doing any grooming. :(

It's finally snowing...

Saturday we got half an inch followed by rain that erased it. This happened 3 or 4 times but by Sunday it started to stick. Had 3" of the heavy wet white stuff Sunday night and this morning it is looking good. We have about 4 - 6" with the forecast calling for another 15 - 18" through tomorrow morning.

It has been snowing steadily all day with the temp holding at or below 32 so it should last as it will really cool down tonight. Took my bride for a nice ride in the AWD/snow mode Honda Ridgeline this morning. By the time we got home it was really coming down, near blizzard conditions so of course I dropped her off and rolled out the Rzr for some more fun.

We hit the Jacuzzi last night as the snow was falling {temp 32}and will repeat as needed today and tomorrow. Got all of the winter storm necessities and am keeping the wood stove roaring. Waaaay too much fun.

1/25/2021 12:48 pm;

Just shoveled some snow off the walkways and have the pellet stove cranked up to keep the house nice and cozy.

Only 3-4" right now but maybe more to come.

Next three days will not be seeing 40* as a high.

Stay safe.

It's finally over... for now

Snowed all day Monday and most of Tuesday dropping a total of 2' of the heavy wet stuff. I lost 3 Junipers and an an Oak tree to the weight of the snow with it snapping limbs 8 - 10' thick. The road in front of our property is down to about 8' wide with all of the debris from the snowplows coming through.

One of my downed Junipers fell across more than half of the narrow lane of a road so I had to get after that right away. Managed to cut it free and drag it out of the street {just barely} then went to work on the others. Had to quit when I finally destroyed the chain for my pole saw and I don't have a spare.

The 45 yard long driveway remains under 2' of snow that even the Rzr cannot negotiate but I'll start working on that {later} this morning, currently it is 19 degrees.

Looked out front yesterday to see a neighbor on an old tractor with a big scoop up front going house to house opening up driveways... how cool is that, we had never even met. She really knew what that tractor was about and did a great job for the neighborhood. Ya gotta love living in a small mountain town where folks look out for each other.

The forecast is calling for more snow Friday and with these temps what we have isn't going anywhere soon.

Snow in Iowa

I live in a suburb of Des Moines. This winter we have had 42" to date. My home got 12" this Monday into Tuesday morning. My wife and I enjoy winter and snow but some years we get almost nothing while others are heavy.

Monday afternoon we were waiting for the snow to stop before we got after it. We heard a snow blower outside our house...it was the next door neighbor clearing our driveway. He had seen us in the past using shovels and pushers and assumed we didn't have a blower. I thanked him and showed him our 5 horse Honda. He decided to go back to his lane which is pretty long. We ran our blower when it got over 4" deep; then went in and waited for the next round.

I'm working on what I can do for the neighbor to show our appreciation.

So glad you all are enjoying your new location. :)

View of the valley to the left of my house.

Note that the hill tops are above the clouds. There is a castle on the top of the rightmost hill in the first picture and you can't see it.;)

On our 2nd day in a row of snow falling.

Woke up to 4" more on top of the old snow, that puts it close to a foot, total but it is wet and hard to shovel.

Shoveled the back path to the lawn and the grass, so our short legged female dog could do her thing without getting all wet and carry snow back into the house, even though it is still snowing right now.

No reason to go any where, so the front will just have to wait for a day or two and see what the sun will do.

So much for all the shoveling yesterday.
