Wonder what's going on here in Texas?

Renewed mine in Michigan recently and it took 6 months. Something tells me it's not the anti-gun crowd that is responsible as much as the anti-work government employees. Dosen't matter if it's a gun license, welfare check, bussiness license or gay marriage certificate...it won't be done fast, friendly or efficient.

Washington State

Renewal took about 10 days and cost $32.00. Initial costs $35.00. IMHO...Anything costing over $50.00 is plain robbery! Any time over 20 days is governmental incompetence.

I don't disagree with the spirit of your post, but any license or wait is government (and electorate) incompetence.

BTW, Scots, welcome to the forum.

I mailed my application to DPS on April 8th; got the letter back saying it was being processed on May 27th. I finally received my license in the mail this morning.

Man that stinks!! Here in alabama (in my county) you just go to the sheriffs office, fill out an application, wait about 2 or 3 days while they contact your references and go pay them 5 bucks!

It took about 90 days and $100 to get a permit here in Indiana.
The good thing about it is that it's a LIFETIME permit that only expires when I do.

In Virginia a law went into effect on July 1st, 2004 which provides that if the court has not issued or denied the permit within 45 days of the date of receipt noted on the application, the clerk shall certify on the application that the 45-day period has expired, and send a copy of the certified application to the applicant. The certified application shall serve as a de facto permit, which shall expire 90 days after issuance, and shall be recognized as a valid concealed handgun permit when presented with a valid government-issued photo identification.

Mine took a few weeks. Renewals have taken about the same. Virginia hires more staff to handle any increase in applications, which makes perfect sense. Virginia can be very gun friendly, at times one of the most gun friendly in the Union. But we have a Democrat for a governor, and he just doesn't get it.

Take for example the Restaurant Ban. You cannot carry concealed in any restaurant or club serving on-premises alcohol, even if you do not drink. You have to leave the gun in your car while you walk into the restaurant, eat, and then walk back to your car. Smart huh? The (soon to be out of office) governor proudly states "alcohol and guns do not mix."

Tim Kaine, the moron governor of Virginia signed legislation in 2008 which allows the commonwealth's attorneys and their assistants to carry concealed handguns without a background check, without training, and into restaurants that serve alcohol, and the legislation does not stop them from drinking while carrying there!

The commonwealth legislature recently passed bipartisan legislation correcting this flagrant error however, again, the moron governor vetoed the legislation, stating "guns and alcohol do not mix."

You can however carry OPEN in a restaurant or club which serves alcohol, which of course makes perfect sense doesn't it?

Things are no better in Michigan...

A lot depends on the county in which you reside.

I live in Wayne County (Detroit, Dearborn, Livonia), and the former sheriff is very anti-gun. The gun board only has three members, and they meet for one hour per month, approving CPL applications. It took exactly three months for mine to be processed, and received by me in the mail.

In neighboring Oakland County, applications have taken as little as five days.

The law states that the CPL must be issued within 45 days of receiving the background fingerprint report from the Michigan State Police. However, no one seems to know exactly how long the fingerprint report takes.

Also, no judge yet, has forced the gun boards to issue a license based on the delay. There've been several instances where an attorney has gone to court seeking "shall comply" court orders, but each has been denied.

flop-shank...thanks!

...for the welcome and to those before you too! You all make a new member feel at home!

I do agree that any wait is unconscionable, but the LAW and the BACKLOG and the REDUCED STAFFS all contribute. Let's all move to Vermont!:D

If all we moved to Vermont, we could get rid of their idiot senators! :D (for lack of a smiley that looks like a wolf licking it's chomps!) Thanks for the kind words. I'm a firm believer that we'll never build a viable community that furthers our interests by alienating each other. ;)
