Wonder what's going on here in Texas?

According to the published "guidelines," applications for concealed handgun licenses are supposed to be processed in 60 days in Texas. That grew to 90. Now, I know of a friend who took the course in February (five months ago), passed everything just fine, and STILL has heard absolutely nothing from them. I took it on April 18 (and today is July 1), and I can see the same message everyday on the internet link when I check on the status of my application: it says, "Processing Application." If they are so far behind, that would indicate to me that they probably have enough income to hire more staff and improve their service. This is nuts. Over $100 for the license application and over $100 for the class on top of that. This truly stinks to high heaven. Anybody got any ideas about this situation?

Wow that's rough. Here in PA (in my county) it takes $20 or $25 and a few minutes in the Sheriff's office to get your permit. No course required. My future B-I-L applied for his and it took a month to hear back from his Sheriff's office... but that was because the real Sheriff died and the new guy had no idea what he was doing.

$200 for a permit is steep. That's a almost new (used) gun!

Its always been a slow process. I suspect what you are seeing is the reaction of many fence sitters who have finally decided to jump on board. No doubt inspired by Obama and his ilk. The DPS is overwhelmed with applications and back ground checks. A bummer for everyone waiting - for sure. Ultimately it has to produce a boon for the pro 2A constituency. We need more people with a vested interest in gun rights.

In New Mexico, my initial CHL took some 4 months...I did call & complain and actually received a letter from the Gov's office apologizing for the delay..Yeah, I e-mailed him also.

As I understand it in Texas, one of the main sticking points is the background check, especially in large counties (Harris seems to be one of the worst offenders). Until the recent legislative session, only commissioned peace officers were allowed to do the checks. One of the provisions in the DPS Sunset Bill now allows other 'designees' to perform the checks, but that might not be effective until later in the year. It's a small step, but hopefully one that will improve the situation. Past that, I'm not exactly sure what's going on, but there is more and more vocal concern.

DPS is even behind on processing Instructor renewal applications. I'm not sure what all the reasons are, but they are taking longer than ever with mine, and I've been an Instructor since 1995. I do know that the number of new and renewal applications has skyrocketed since the election, but having dealt directly and in person with some of the folks in the CHL Section, I know that they could do a better job, if they gave a damn. The front line folks who "instruct Instructors" are a great group. The behind-the-scenes clerical grunts, not so much. There was a bill written in the last (embarrassing) legislative session that would have made carry legal under an expired license, so long as application had been made for renewal, but it died either in committee or never reached the floor after passing committee, I forget which. We needed that bill, along with a couple of others that died because the idiots in Austin wasted so much time debating the voter ID bill that should have passed both houses unanimously.

DPS needs its reins yanked, hard. The only way to do that is by the Legislature threatening to pull funding if they don't clean up their act. The quality of the entire agency has dropped dramatically over the last 10 or 15 years. The head of the legal department in the CHL unit is a wannabe BAT-girl/Brownshirt. Lots of the old heads that were smart, professional and cared about their work are retiring and being replaced with a completely different class of people.

BTW, renewals are supposed to be turned around in 45 days, new applications in 60. I've been hearing that some renewals are taking upwards of 90 days. Shouldn't take over two weeks on a renewal. Outrageous, in my view.

I live in Montgomery Texas and took the CCW Class there. At day 100 , and after several calls to the DPS to see what was going on , I called my State rep at 9am, by 3PM the DPS called me and said they had talked to my Rep and were expediting my application. I had the plastic in my had within a week. Give it a try, also go to www.texaschlforum.com , they might also be able to help, and help you keep your sanity. Same thing is going on in Florida. I got mine about 2 years ago and it took 88 days. The regs say a max of 90 days. From what I'm hearing now, it's taking a lot longer than that.
It's just because of the volume of people that are getting their permit due to crime, Obama, etc.
I've had numerous people who never showed an interest before ask me about the process of getting a permit. And they are buying their first gun too.

Again I say: If they are doing that much business, then they are receiving enough income to warrant and afford an increase in their staff and therefore productivity. It's all an obamanation! Texas charges much more money than most states for all this... but we are getting 2 cents worth of service. If we did our jobs this way... we would be GONE!!!

I am afraid of the socialist nation we seem to be moving towards... letting the government control everything. They can't even control or handle this CHL situation, and they better get the ____ out of health-care! Socialized medicine has not worked in any country that has tried it. You have to be nervous when a politician thinks he knows better than you about what is "good" for you.

The big "change" is not suiting most... I already hope the next election will cure this. I distrust anyone who really thinks he is smart enough to know better than we do about OUR business. How insulting. Arrogance reeks from the present administration!

You write to your state representative, your state senator, the local paper. You continue the dialogue with every level of politician, municipal, county, etc.

We need to take a page from our liberal friends, (not their philosophy, their tactics) and let the media and government know we are here and we are not going to take it any more.

Of course the Brady bunch hate Missouri. We didn't vote for the messiah. Even though he carried St. Louis City and Kansas City. Our problem is lack of AMMO

Good God if things are that bad in Texas there is no hope. I thought Texas was the most independent state in the union. I have lived in Texas (for a short time) and thought most Texicans carried concealed anyway. I believe in the Denton area you could put every man and a few women up side down and shake out a whole lot of iron. What was hard to find was a watering hole. One time Denton was dry and then wet and the County seemed always to go the opposite way. But you could get a drink one way or another. As a old time vet in Denton said once, there are some things a gentleman didn't talk about and concealed carry was one of them the other two I will leave to your imagination.

I took the course in October and got my CHL in January. According to the insructor, even before the election the number of applications skyrocketed fearing that McCain would be beat. One of my co-workers was in Austin a couple of weeks ago taking the instructor's course and he said DPS told him they were hiring a bunch of temp workers to help speed up the process. Yeah, right......I'd better stop there before I get sarcastic.

I wish I could blame it on the surge in CHL requests since the election, but I don't buy it. I also have a professional license to practice medicine in Texas and it took months for the State to process my application. When I called to check on my temporary license I was told that the person in charge was out with an illness and everything had slowed way down. I was also told that as long as I didn't refer to myself as an official practioner (profession eliminated for privacy) then it was okay to practice without a license (If that's the case, why bother with licensing in the first place). After nearly $1000 I finally got licensed (Strangely, my wife is in a medical field that is far more invasive than mine and yet her license only cost a couple of hundred bucks with no test).

When it came time to renew my license recently, I called to check my status and was told it was a holiday and no staff was on duty. Then my employer called and got more infomation than I could, so I called back and got the same BS story as before.

A friend of mine is also about four months out waiting on his CHL.

The State of Texas doesn't have it's crap together anymore than any other State. This is what we get when governments run things. Good luck with your application. I hope it goes through before you need it.

I too thought Texas was a beacon of hope, until I got here and found out otherwise. Texas should change it's name to TAXES! It'd be a lot more honest.
