"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt" attributed to both Abraham Lincoln and Mark Twain. Not sure who to credit.

Proverbs 17:28 English Standard Version (ESV)
"Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise;
when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent."

"An armed Society is a polite society. Manners are good when one may have to back up his acts with his life."

"You can have peace. Or you can have freedom. Don't ever count on having both at once."

Woodrow Wilson Smith aka Lazarus Long

Mom and Dad always said: If you always tell the truth, you avoid the trouble of keeping your lies straight.

Ivan
So true. Reminded me of this quote from Sir Walter Scott and its un-dated addendum:
O, what a tangled web we weave,
When first we practise to deceive!

But when we've practised for a while
How vastly we improve our style.

("Marmion", Sir Walter Scott, addition by J.R. Pope)

I've never been able to find anything about J.R. Pope, but I like his style :)
