Worst meal you ever ate multiple times?

I'd like to interrupt this rather upleasant thread with a question for our resident Brits and anyone else with extensive exposure to their culinary habits, abilities, etc.: Does the common stereotype have any basis in reality? There's an interesting joke about the respective tendencies of Western European peoples which paints a picture of British cooking as decidedly bad. I told the joke to a German immigrant acquaintance of mine and when I got to that particular part of it, my acquaintance laughed uproariously. He had had a great deal of experience with English food and agreed with the sentiment wholeheartedly. Having no comparable experience I've often wondered if there was any truth to the whole thing.

Well, pardon me for abruptly changing the subject. Maybe anyone who wants to respond can use PM if we don't want any further drift.

Went to school briefly in the eastern part of England.... British cafeteria food.

No idea how everything was devoid of flavor, but it sure was. I seem to recall most of it was boiled.

I grew up in an English kitchen run by a woman who knew times of want and strict rationing. She learned to make meals from what was at hand and to this day will waste little.

I can't recall having a bad meal.

However, Ruthie makes a delicious tuna casserole with crushed kettle chips baked on top.

Lamb doesn't appear very popular in the US. In Australia, lamb is liked just the same as beef, chicken, and pork. Nothing nicer than slow cooked leg of lamb with the Sunday roast/baked dinner. We probably have lamb chops once a week or so in my family.

Sandbox and some SE Europe countries serve a lot of lamb and some mutton - it's usually really nicely flavored/spiced.

My former mother in law's Thanskgiving meals. A sweet, lovely lady, still going strong at 90, but an absolutely horrible cook. Every year before we moved away I dreaded going and acting like I loved it lol.

The Chow Hall at the 187th Medical Training Detachment at Ft. Sam Houston served MRE Corned Beef Hash for breakfast 3 times a week.

Chicken Ala King MRE.

My wife's tuna burgers. They weren't poorly cooked I just don't like fish.

We apparently don't eat as much lamb as some other folks do.
Southerner here, I didn't have any until I was grown and gone!
Doubt if my Mother ever had any.
Have eaten a fair amount of lamb, I like it.
The Navajos and other Native People out this way raise sheep.
And they like Mutton. I've tried it in the Navajo Taco, it's pretty strong Stuff!
And one more Taco I don't like is the Lingua.
You would think a dude who knows 30 words of Spanish and 15 Latin Words would know what Lingua means!
Once in a classic San Fran Restaurant I tried Sweetbreads.
Another one to avoid.
They gave it that Cutesy name because not many folks would want to eat Thymus Glands!

I will still stick with the Navy Lamb Stew. We all were certain that Goat was sometimes substituted. It was strong. That day I usually bought me a sandwich.

One supposed origin of BBQ sauce is that it evolved from the spicy sauces middle easterners put on mutton to cover up the strong "gamey" taste of the meat.

Slightly off tack, but still love liver and onions. The key is fresh calf liver, dipped in flour and pan fried till slightly pinkish in the center. Side of fried onions tinged in Worcestershire sauce. Suspect people eating old frozen sliced liver overcooked leads to hating it.

If hungry enough, will eat anything so long as it doesn't make me sick. Lots of stuff i didn't like, but ate repeatedly to keep nourished.

Not a meal but canned beets. I'll try them every couple years to see if my tastes change but revolt myself every time.
Liver sauteed in tomato sauce until slightly pink with a boatload of onion on the side to cut the skunk taste is fairly edible.

Chitterlings…. (Hog intestines!) During BCT at Ft. Polk I made the mistake of asking one of the Black Drill Sergeant what he was eating. Chitterlings, want some? Have some! Yeech! No spitting it out of course! Literally had to choke it down.

Tried it at Ft. Benning (twice), same result. The worst c-rations were ham and Lima beans, which were referred to as something else that would earn me a time out on here. They were dated from the 50's as I recall. Pack of smokes and chiclets gum in each one.

Tried a ghoulash at F. Gordon, literally no one in the chow hall could eat it except for that one guy. Everyone else filled up on salads and side dishes.
The XO of our training battalion came in and saw all the food dumped in the garbage and went nuts, until he tasted the food. Threatened to court martial the mess cook if he ever served something that again. I to this day believe he added "something" to that food.

Other then those specific instances I usually had pretty decent chow when I was in!

Mama Lo's

When a post-doc at the University of Florida in Gainesville some friends "carried" me to Mama Lo's. It was a locally (in)famous "soul food" eatery and was a sort of cult thing with certain sectors of students and staff.

I ordered the chicken soup, thinking it would be relatively safe, and I was surely wrong about that. Mama and her staff had made no efforts to remove any bones from the potted chicken and there was plenty of what I can only describe as entrails included - fully cooked mind you. It was disgusting and I can eat the butts and ashes out of an ashtray.

I went back one time, swept up by a group once more, and tried the soup again thinking perhaps they'd just forgot to clean it up the last time. What's the old adage about fool me once shame on you, fool me twice I'm the idiot?

Admittedly, a lot of this is mind over matter for me. Liver? I think of it's function in the critter. Intestines? Yeah, yuck! But for the life of me, I can't tell you why chitterlings sound horrible but I love sausage in natural casings. Natural casings = hog or sheep intestines. And for that matter, unless it's homemade, I don't want to know what's in the filling either.

I don't like lamb, can't help it. My wife loves it. She's also frugal, bless her heart.
She would treat us... herself to it whenever it was on sale. For those that don't know, lamb on sale is code for nasty old billy goat. She loves it.
It took years but I finally broke her of saving 50¢ to bring food in the house I can't eat. I'll force a couple bites of real lamb but that goat is vile.

This is the same woman that took me years to break from driving an extra 4 miles to think she could save 15¢ on a tankful of gas.

I would give Ruthie's version a try. I like all fish. But I've only ever had the casserole with variations of the mac & n cheese thing.
