Would you want this for your shield?

Hey all, long time lurker on this forum, I've owned a Bodyguard for the last 3 years but just upgraded to a Shield the other day. I came up with an accessory for my shield that I am going to prototype for myself. I am a mechanical designer by day and have CAD, 3D printing, CNC machining, etc. capabilities through work and was curious if anyone else shared interest in this accessory I've come up with. Below is a cheesy graphic I created to explain my idea, perhaps if enough people are interested I'll crank out a handful of them to sell?

Seems like a good concept, but will be hard to find holsters that would work around that added even if dont have a light on

No. I wouldn't want to be drilling holes in my frame. I have a Fs9 ,9c, and shield 9. I have a light to mount on my 9c for home protection and take the light off when I carry it. Not that I wouldn't use my shield for self defense if I had to its more of a BUG for me I keep in my back pack. The $50 price tag also turns me away even if I wanted to use this product. Oh yeah ,Welcome to the forum.

This is just a personal opinion, but if you can conceal a shield with a weapon mounted light, then you can probably conceal a M&P compact with a weapon mounted light. Also considering how light the shield is, I would imagine mounting a weapon light to it would throw off "the balance" and make it feel not as natural. Again, just my 2 cents

The holsters I use and like very much do not allow me to carry with a light attached, I don't need the light during the day.

There are add-on rails for a lot of the older designed guns. This is a brand new design. IMHO, If S&W had thought a weapon light was appropriate, they would have built it that way.

Personally, I consider the Shield to be a BUG, and a s AR-Getsome said, no weapon light on a BUG.

Nice concept.

However, in my opinion, the above folks express my concerns. The light would likely really throw off the weight balance, as well.

And let's not forget that quite a few shields have been going back for warranty work lately. If you drill holes in your frame S&W will most likely void your warrant.

I agree 100%. No way would I drill holes. I would purchase another gun that was set-up for whatever accessory I wanted to add before I drilled holes in any part of my gun.

I like the concept, but I like to remove the light when I am at the range so I don't get residue all over the lens of the light. Doesn't look like you can easily remove it. Your thoughts?

The rail can't easily be removed (without disassembling the firearm), but the flashlight can. The flashlight is connected via rails. All you need is a screwdriver or sometimes even a quarter will do the trick to remove it.

I would not add a light to my Shield.

YES you need a light regardless of daylight hours or not but not on the Shield.

My old PF-9 had a rail and it was a nice option, but I really don't miss it on my Shield.

I'm sure there are some that would buy one, but since I pocket carry the Shield, I'm not one of them.

If I didn't have to drill into my frame, Id be all over it. Even though this is a EDC for most of us. I'd like to have whatever I can get around me whenever I need it. rather it be a shotgun, shield, or a nice 1911 .45. I would keep the flashlight on it when its not being carried and take it off when I was.

I would not add a light to my Shield as I bought it for maximum conceal ability. I think a light detracts from being concealable.

I have a 9C with a light for my night-stand gun, and it does have a light. During any middle of the night encounter the light will do three things for me;

Allow me to see in the dark to determine friend or foe.
Allow me to get a better sight picture.
Allow me to temporarily blind the intruder (maybe).

It's an idea. Most gun savvy owners that are really familiar with guns wouldn't install it for several reasons as mentioned above. But believe, me for every 10 that don't want it, there likely is another 10 that will, provided you don't price yourself out of the market for it. Any price over $30. I think is too much.
Woman especially that only use this 1 gun either in their purse or in the home. So sure someone will want it.

I think the concept is intriguing. Solving the issue of size and the mechanical mounting would be excellent. For example, using an ultra low profile LED lamp. There are plenty of 3V LED modules with high brightness. You do not need much with the shield. A bit of direction and quite bright can do the trick. Using button cell batteries might work as longevity of the beam is not too critical in my opinion. The mounting, if it did not require drilling, would be the bomb. I can't remember how that bottom of the frame is like but a bit more thinking can get it there. Maybe a magnetic mount by mounting a low profile rare earth magnet inside? I don't know, just thinking out loud :-)
