Would you????

"Officer, the gentleman screamed he was going to kill me. I believed him. Right now I'm really confused by this whole situation. If you have more questions please talk to my lawyer."

"Hello Joe (my lawyer), I've been involved in a self-defense shooting. What do I do?"

Cooler heads have prevailed on this thread. When you got out of your car, your lowered yourself to his level. Call the cops. That's what they are for.

Hopefully the BG will leave bloody fingerprints at the scene so the cops can figure out who did you and your family.

GET REAL!

Response time here in our little town is almost always less than 2 minutes. You probably wouldn't believe what I could do to you with a tire iron (or a brick, for that matter) in 1 minute - Leaving me another minute to be on my way.
If we're out of town the response time is going to be about 10 minutes - At Best.

A 200 grain bullet or a 4000 pound vehicle. I'm wondering how badly the guy wanted to be a speed bump. I guess I would make an attempt to try to back up, and if I was in my Jeep, that would be every attempt as long as there was something not in the way. But getting out of the car is just a bad move all around. Let him come to you.

I agree too that no two scenarios are exactly alike, but I remember years back when I was doing armed security work for some high end money transfers what happened to me after I had left the job. I lived only about 10 minutes from work so I was driving on the highway and a car kept riding my tail. It was a bunch of guys in a small beater car with what later I found had Quebec plates (only plate is on the back of the car). These guys got on me, honked, high beamed etc. I was in the far right (slow lane) so I wasn't going anywhere. This was back in 1997, so I didn't have a cell phone. So I got off the highway at my exit, and the car tailed me, still high beaming and honking. Well, I always had cars and trucks that had a bit more than stock under the hood, because I believe in getting out of trouble as fast as I got into it, and my Dodge was no exception. So I put my foot in it and got away from the car, and since I knew the neighborhood, pulled into a culdesac and u-turned the truck facing the road. I got out and stood by the truck with the driver side door in front of me. Probably not the best idea, but hey, I was 21 and a little less wise than I am now. Sure enough that car came in slow but heading in my direction. We didn't have uniforms were I worked, just white button down shirts and black pants. So I stepped out from behind the truck where they could see me and my right hand was on the butt of my Model 19. I was only about 15 yards or so from that car and I can still see the passenger in the front seat putting his hands on the dash, and then that car backing it into reverse and taking off. I think if that car wasn't such a piece of junk and there weren't so many people in it that the tires probably would have squealed for a few feet. I stood there for a few minutes, and I do remember afterwards getting a slight case of the shakes. But after a bit that passed.

I'd have to try to leave the area by using my vehicle as a weapon - over, around or through.

Best solution so far. I had a "psycho-motorist" back about 35 years ago. Followed me all through town, cussing and trying to get next to me. Came to a light on Rt 46 and he ran up,punching the driver window, finally jumped on my hood. When the light went green, I floored that 400CID Buick, got up to about 40, and locked up the brakes. His flight was good but the landing, a little rocky. Leisurely went around on the left. Joe

I think I would step out, ask him what he wanted and raised my shirt to show him that I'm armed then let him decide if he wanted to get in his vehicle and move on or bring a tire iron to a gunfight.

Interesting thread, I've got a few experiences to share that are relevant to the discussion, the first one involves me, the other two people I knew directly, or indirectly.

1) In my early 20s, guy blatantly cuts me off, I salute him, he goes bannas, making all sorts of gestures, hitting his brakes etc. He pulls over to the curb. I'm pissed, and figure that I will pull over and see where this goes, as I'm not the type to back down.

Guy gets out his car, first. I don't want him to damage my car, so I get out and stand by the door of my car. Idiot comes toward me, and tells me he's going to "kick my A". I take that stuff serious, so as soon as he gets within arms length (I never walked toward him...), I used both hands to push/strike him right in the sternum (with palms). Guy goes flying backward a few feet into the side of my car, I ball up my fist getting ready for the uppercut as soon as he straightens up. Instead, as soon as he got a breath back, he says, "you assaulted me." I say, you are a (female cat), and told him he should think twice about getting out of his car, telling me that he is going to kick my ***, while charging toward me!

I get in my car, he flashes a prison guard badge and tells me to give him my license. I tell him if he wants to contest this, he can get my lisence plate #, but if he did, he would regret it. Never heard back from him.

Lesson, very stupid for pulling over, and getting out! I was young and full of pepsi and vinegar, I was used to fighting (literally) for what I felt was right, and was conditioned to stand up for myself. Good thing he didn't have a knife, or gun, or a tire iron...

2) Traffic altercation, one town next to my hometown. Two guys get out of their car to confront each other. One guy, can you believe, had a tire iron. Tire iron guy cracks the unarmed guy over the head, and kills him on the spot, with the victim's fiancée watching, in horror, from the passenger seat.

Lesson, very stupid, and tragic for getting out of the car.

3) Traffic altercation where a guy, gets upset with another guy driving a company van. Agressor gets out of his car at a red light, goes back to guy driving company van (nowhere for him to go). Company guy STAYS IN the van. Agressor pulls him out of van, and beats the heck out of him, sending him to the hospital, intensive care, lucky to be alive.

Lesson, lock the door, try to drive away, or get out and defend yourself, as you are in a much better position while on your feet!

So, I'm older now, more in control of logic and reason, and have two kids, a house, money in the bank, and guns I want to continue to own. I will choose to avoid stupid confrontations whenever possible. As a CCW, I especially avoid this type of thing, as I have a responsibility to not put myself in a situation where a gun may need to be used. If something happens where a gun is necessary it will because I have been attacked, and had no other reasonable option.

If avoidance is not possible, I will aggressively defend myself, with force appropriate the situation. No weapons, if at all possible! I would certainly consider a person coming at me with a tire iron to be a deadly threat ( see #2 above). I would warn the agressor that I was armed, and to back away. If he came within striking distance, I would defend myself; I don't run as fast as I used to, and will not be killed with my back turned.
