I have a friend of mine that is an experienced Gunsmith. He wants to use my M&P Shield as a guinea pig and make a Picatinny Rail on it for adding a laser or light. I personally think that it wouldnt work because the polymer under the barrel is too thin to be grinding away at it. And if anything goes wrong, I can't just go out and buy a new one right away. He thinks that if it turns out right, that it would bring more customers to the shop. I'm leaning towards "NO", but what do you guys think?

I would say no unless he is willing to replace it immediately if his idea does not work out.

I agree, but immediate replacement would be almost impossible as hard as they are to find. Considering he's wanting to try it out for the sake of possibly bringing in more business if it works, I'd tell him to go out and round up his own to experiment on.

Also, I wonder what that would do to the warranty? My guess would be that it would void it.

I think that would be a ridiculously unwise decision.
He needs to look for his own Shield to experiment on.

Cactus Jack, I already have the 9C too. Yeah, I'm not going to let him do it. He can go out and buy his own if he wants to work on a Shield.

Yes IF....he is willing yo replace it and you get a % of what he sells, if it works. Doesn't have to be money. Maybe he can sell you something at cost or only charge for parts for gunsmithing service.

Depending on how good of a friend he is.

Is he trying to grind in a rail or drill to add a rail??? There doesn't look like enough meat in the dust cover to grind one in.

Not to mention, how would YOUR gun with a rail, bring in more business to HIS store? Unless you leave it there so he can display it, I don't see how that would help him out. Pictures of it in his store might garner some interest, but only from customers inside the store. (and since Shield's are so difficult to get right now, I don't see the benefit to him)

I showed him that there wasn't enough material to grind a rail into the gun. And if he did put in a rail, he wants to take pictures and put it on his website gallery for customers to see what kind of work he's done on firearms.

Your friend is a loon, let him try his nutty idea on his own gun. Crimson Trace already has a laser for the Shield that requires no rail. I suppose you could attach a rail to the Shield the way S&W attached it to their 3913 to turn it into a 3913 TSW but wouldn't that increase the bulk of the pistol and reduce its usefulness for CCW? Good gunsmiths are hard to find and your friend clearly isn't one of them.

Pointless on a Shield, the light shines farther than the weapon shoots straight. So why worry about it.........It was made for mostly CC use. Which means in most cases the shooter already knows what or who he's shooting at. No need for a light or a laser on a self defense weapon. Do u think u have time to turn the tac light on, put the laser on target and shoot before the person does you harm? I know I wouldnt waste my time nor risk damaging my weapon, for that matter.

Nothing to worry about in the first place cause I already know that there's no way that he's going to touch my shield. If I was to carry a Tac light on it, it would be for home defense unless I happen to grab a different firearm anyway.
