Remember the scene from "City Slickers" where they are talking about childhood memories? I forget now which character (it might have been Billy Crystal) said that the 1st time that they went to Yankee Stadium they were amazed that the grass was green. When I heard that, my jaw dropped open.

Dad was stationed at Ft. Wadsworth, on Staten Island. He took my brother and I to Yankee Stadium. We were in the cheap seats, way high. The stairs went up and us, and then we came out to where we could see the field. It was green, the richest green I had ever seen. That was a shock to my 7 year old eyes, since everyone knew that the playing field at Yankee Stadium was grey.

Yes, I am old enough that B&W TV was a major part of my life. I was in HS when Dad finally broke down and purchased a color TV, a Philco. Mom quickly destroyed it by placing a potted plant on top, and got a little carried away watering it. It was then a year or so before another color TV came into our home.

... your first set of golf clubs had wooden shafts.

... midsized cars were 23' long and an AM radio was an option.

... you needed to poke holes in the top of a beer can to drink it.

... your first deer kill tag was a lead band.

... China was the fancy plates you used on special occasions.

... and wives obeyed their husbands!:eek::eek:

The Lone Ranger gave you a silver bullet.

If you remember black & white TV.

If you know how to use a rotary phone.

Well, y'all musta been rich folks. We had no TV or a phone. There was no furnace, just a kerosene space heater in the center of the house. Dad went to the woodshed every night with a sprinkling can to get enough kerosene for the night. We had a car but had to take the bus in Winter because the street didn't get plowed.

Dad had guns but when he returned from WWII he didn't want to shoot any more.

Dad went to school with Joe Musial, one of Stan's relatives.

Way too much nostalgia these days. My problem isn't virus, but really crappy weather. As soon as it hits 50 and the sun comes out, I'm going to go to my camp and drink a bunch of beer and put a bunch of lead into the ground, not necessarily in that order.

I figure the deer, bear and turkey won't care about social distancing, but I'll bring along masks for them just in case.

PS. Even though it may sound like we were hillybillys in the woods, truth be told I grew up in the second largest city in NY, and this was how it was in the city.
