I read that the FBI was aware of this guy through an investigation of one of his friends. So why wasn't the info passed onto NICS?

did he have a criminal record prior?

That's about all that can go into NICS.

He had a misdemeanor assault. Not disqualifying.

Knowing someone who is under investigation isn't disqualifying. Even being under investigation isn't disqualifying.

LOL but someone else committing a crime..... could "disqualify" the rest of us from owning not only the gun he used but about 250* similar guns!

With that logic.........................

Trucks have been used by terrorists to run down folks/ or carry explosives...... so let's ban rental trucks to the common man.

Drunk drivers kill people ...... so let's bring back Prohibition. :D

You can't make this stuff up ......or ....... fix stupid!!!!!

* footnote; heard the 250 number on the news....so it must be true.

"If you want to build an AR-15 pistol you just put a pistol grip and a short barrel on it. And as a result of those features it will be classified, according to the federal definitions, as a pistol instead of a rifle."

Good to know.

smells jest like a continuance of past doings....

Find a individual that is predisposed to committing a heinous crime,
indoctrinate that person to commit the deed and allow the actor
the means to perpetrate the act....It's only the first one hundred
days of this new deal...how many more active shooters are waiting in the wings?

I never saw the appeal of an AR pistol. To me it's just a Rube Goldberg combination of jerry-rigs, compromises and loopholes. I can't even recall having ever seen one in the wild, so the appeal must not be directed at my particular demographic.

To me it's like someone who takes a one-ton pick-up truck like a Ford F350, Chevy 3500HD or Dodge 3500 - then lowers it and mounts low-profile tires on oversized rims. It can no longer do what it was designed to do, and it will never be what it is trying to be. But come time to renew your tag, you still have to register it as a one-ton truck - because even if it doesn't look like one or perform like one it still is one...

Probably a few in the wings, what with the idea of expunging criminal records due to wokeness.

Are we going to end up having to pass a psych exam to buy a gun??

No, but Colorado already has a Red Flag Law (as well as "universal background checks" and magazine limits).

His family and friends knew he was unbalanced and seemingly did nothing about it, in fact, according to local media there, his sister supposedly took one of his guns away from him two days before the incident.

What gets me is the media's insistence on reporting that the gun was "modified" with an arm brace. Supposedly from information supplied by law enforcement. Ruger ships their AR pistols with the brace attached. No mods necessary. But they want him to be a Boogeyman, crafting deadlier weapons than have ever been seen by human eyes.

However, if it was originally configured as a rifle, you cannot legally make it into a pistol. You can make it into an SBR after paying for a tax stamp.

But, if it was originally configured as a pistol, you can go back and forth between pistol and rifle as many times as you like, PROVIDING that you don't ever install a short barrel at the same time that the stock is on it.

Strange, but true. Who said that gun laws need to make any sense?
