You have $800 to spend and no S&W revolver yet but want one...what do you get?

If the OP is asking for revolver recommendations, I would suggest looking for a nice model 28-2 with a 6" tube. The longer barrel 28 will complement his 4" model 66 very well allowing him to shoot unlimited full power loads. If he is not asking for a revolver, the M&P 9mm Performance Center models would be an excellent choice. The ammo is cheap and plentiful which will allow him to enjoy it all the more.

We need more clarification... I'd assume he's looking for a 1961 to 1980 S&W revolver based on the subforum and that the post title is a typo.

If it's truly within that timeframe then 686 isn't an option. I'd vote for either a model 17 or a 29 depending on want kind of shooting you do.

The way I read it is that the OP wants a S&W revolver, but doesn't know that a model 66 is one.

since the OP cleared things up & changed the wording of the title
S&W 686+ with 2 1/2 0r 3 inch barrel. But check the revolver over well for flaws & quality.
Also I stand by my Ruger Redhawk (short barrel) choice.

Anyone that recommended anything other than a S&W needs to sign out and go elsewhere.

For the OP, you need to evaluate your shooting interests. Target, competition, self defense, hunting, etc. There are S&W revolvers to suit just about every shooting situation. One of the most versatile, fun, guns is the Model 17/617 .22RF. It has provided the most enjoyment for shooting to thousands of shooters for 85 years is one form or another, as a K Frame 22 RF.

I'm a big Smith fan but if I was buying a revolver in that price range it would be:

Ruger Redhawk .44 Mag 5 1/2" Satin Stainless (KRH-445) $782.00 SHIPS FREE)

And sorry, I'm not going to take my ball and go home... ;)

Actually, he said "no revolver yet, but want one". Then later says "...only revolver I have is a 66 no dash....".
Hmmmmmm, don't quite know how to read that.

Larry

It's not that serious. I did that to avoid a super long thread title. My mistake, I apologize.

For $800 +- $100

Q: What would I get?

A: One of these...:)

The long-tube 27's are in my opinion one of the nicest shooters and probably the most elegant revolvers ever produced by S&W (or anyone else for that matter - although a nice SAA is hard to beat...).

Good luck,

I'll throw another vote in for a 4" L-frame in 357 mag...(686, 586, 681, or 581). Hard to beat the versatility and durability.

A K22 of some sorts. Or maybe a nice J AND K frame 38 Special as in model 36 and 10.
Having variants of both, plus a few others, I personally be looking for a 44 or 45 caliber N frame.

John
