Your 3rd Gen collection is not complete until...

Well... I just put a bid on a 9 Recon, on GB.

That'll fill one slot in the "3rd Gen Holy Grail" list (though I'm sure I'll find other slots, as time goes on).

Honestly, I think it'll go for more than I'm willing to pay for it. We'll see.

Well, look what I lost recently due to being asleep at the switch. :(

$750+tax. I'm still sick about it. :o

Oh geez. That went for $750?? Man, that's a bummer.

Surprising that took it home. I've seen Shorty 45s on there for, like, close to two grand. So I didn't think my current bid would even meet the reserve. But it did.

I've been shooting my 6904 lately... something about that gun just "clicks" with me. So... I'm curious to see what I can do with PC version.

Yeah, it went for that. Not a joke. Some lucky local dude practically won the 3rd Gen PC lottery, but as usual, it wasn't yours truly. :( My luck is still in the crapper.

Sometimes, I think God doesn't want me to score any more 3rd Gens. :o

The gun gods work in mysterious ways... perhaps there is another one you're destined to be with...
You would think that might be the case. :o There must be some purpose or reason for all this useless, fruitless running around and suffering!

I still say that Recon .45 should have been mine. I visited the dealer after it sold hoping that lightning might strike twice. But no dice. :( A deal like that on a 98-99% PC gun right here in my own area might not happen again for years, if ever.

Yeah, missing that Recon hurt.

I posted earlier in the thread with my ideas on the 952 market, but I never really addressed the actual OP and discussion.

Collecting is what you make of it and you get to make absolutely ALL the rules, that's part of the fun. And I'm a but confused if we, as respondents, were supposed to offer suggestions on which way YOU should go... or simply talk about which way we wanna go.

Either way, fun discussion but there are no hard & fast "rules" for your collection. With that said, here I go!

Drop the idea that Performance Center pistols are a sect of 3rd Gens. I don't think that's fair. I think it sells the PC guns EXTREMELY short, and I don't mean to disparage the fantastic production 3rd Gens -- I mean to express the idea that PC pistols are "other worldly!" And if you think I'm out in left field when I say that PC pistols shouldn't be termed a kind of 3rd Gen... well, then you may also dislike it when I say "by the way, the 952 isn't even a 3rd Gen!" It's a modernized Model 52, a pistol that arrived in 1961. A First Gen!

How do I argue that PC pistols are not 3rd Gens? Well, you can take MANY different models of 3rd Gens (and 1-2 Gens too) and swap, share or migrate parts. You can swap whole top ends and mix configurations! You can take some internal small parts and jump between calibers too. And you can't do any of that with PC guns.

Having the absolute luxury (luck, good fortune, blessing of a good job that allows me to feed my hobby well after my essential life commitments) of owning some true PC pistols and a slew of 1-2-3rd Gens... they are on a whole different level. I would sell multiple production guns to get a hold of a single PC Limited 5" pistol and that is, in my (experienced) opinion, a more clear way to look at these.

Also, while I am ranting (and I have said this before...) yes, the 3rd Gen is the pinnacle of a fantastic design, the final evolution of one particular line of American firearms history. But to shower as much praise on 3rd Gens as you do and you always have while at the same time seemingly ignoring the 1st and 2nd Gen pistols? Well, it's my opinion that you have cheated yourself greatly.

So what 3rd Gen is missing from the TTSH collection? Well, I say it's a 52-2, 39-2 and a 745... none of which is a 3rd Gen.

If it must be a 3rd Gen then you seriously need a 3906 and if you can't find one (they are scarce) then settle for a 3904.

Well, I know I don't have a 52-2 (mainly because of that darn "need to reload" thang), but how am I ignoring the 1st Gens when I own an ANIB Model 39-2 and a NIB Model 59?

But you are 100% right that I am not big on the 2nd Gens and never have been. :o The full truth be known, the advent of the 2nd Gens actually played a minor role in my decision to stop collecting Smith & Wessons back in the early-to-mid 80's. I do own a slightly-customized-for-competition Model 645 but that is it for 2nd Gens. I really don't foresee getting any others either with the possible exception someday of a top condition Model 639 with round trigger guard and without ambi safety. Sadly, while the Model 745 is a very fine gun, the reverse two-tone look doesn't do anything for me and all the ones I've found in local shops were pretty tired. :o

I've mentioned before my long, failed search for a Model 3906 (or, alternatively, a Model 3904), but I feel I've made up for it somewhat by acquiring a nice Model 909 recently... the very last of the long line of full-size, single stack, 9mm 3rd Gens. Yes, it's a "Value Line" gun, but that doesn't bother me. :)

A Model 952 someday? Only if I win the lottery! :D

Well, I didn't realize that you had either the 39-2 or the 59. You coined the term "Team 3rd Gen" and I enjoy countless posts of yours, and threads and discussions and it just seems like the first S&W ever conceived was a 3rd Gen. ;) I definitely understand the ammo issue that is attached to all 52's.

909 is okay. I like 915/411 but the lesser Value Lines bother me. I believe of those... 909 would be my favorite.

Still, hahaha--
952: not a 3rd Gen.

I may actually end up with another (closer to shooter grade and no box) Model 39-2 tomorrow after the gun show... it will be my "consolation prize" if GaryS beats me to anything really good that turns up at the show. :D

Understood on the Model 952 even though production of different variants lasted almost to the end of 3rd Gen production. It is one helluva gun for sure. Unfortunately, it carries one helluva high price tag no matter which version you're talking about. ;)

But if I ever win the Powerball lottery... watch out! :D

A BIG +1for SummitGunbroker.
If you're not .40-averse, Mark gets some of the best police trade-ins available... SiGs, HK, and of course S&W. Last I checked (about a month ago) he still had some of the CHP 4006s w the integral rail. I went for the 4013TSW because of the size and the lack of a rail, just my preference. Plus, I've already had a 4006.

As a bonus, if you're feeling a little gabby (an affliction I sometimes suffer), Mark will sit and visit w you on the phone if he's not too busy. I've logged more minutes on the phone with him than just about anyone... not counting hold-time w the cable company.

How does one find these trade ins? I searched on Gunbroker for that username, but didn't find anything.

Does this mean I'm done

One of my favorite pictures on this forum...... love the looks of that 9...

mine is not quit there yet ..... and I stippled checkered and "S&W" areas of the grips.

Summit Gun Broker is what you want to type in to Google, not in to the search box on Gunbroker. His website is cheap and antiquated but it gets the job done.

I've never seen that term before........but I thinks that describes me;).........because the only "plan or theme" I have is.......can I shoot it well?..and is it a killer deal?.....is that a plan?:D

It is a plan! And much easier than actually planning.

As for a previous poster's regret on too many 'sporting rifles', a few 80% lowers, a router and jig and a parts kit and you can build as many as you have time and money for.
