Your favorite breed of dog?

All of my life it has been Labrador Retrievers, about 10 of them now. Yellow or black have been great! Richard Wolters wrote some great books, read them and start with a pup 7 weeks old or an older one that has been socialized and you have great times, it is up to you.

Welsh terrier for me. I never thought a small dog would fit my lifestyle, until I got the terrier. Weighs 22 lbs, and loves to hike and retrieve rabbits and grouse without tearing them up. Also being very portable, is easy to take everywhere, even canoeing.

We have had German Shorthairs for years (about 40?). Been through about 6 or 8, now. Love them, first one was a bird dog despite me! But they can be willful!

All our dogs (including a "Schnoodle" and a whippet terrier) except the first GSP, were "pound puppies". We now have a geriatric GSP, the whippet (a PSYCHO dog!) and a 2 year old Pointing Griffon/German Wirehaired Pointer. The Griffon is the best but definitely NOT "birdie". Possibly a little insecure and overly affectionate (?).

Managed pet stores in college and the best overall choices are likely the Labs and Goldens.

Although I would like a Kavkazkya Ovcharka, I'm afraid I would have to decimate the local deer population to keep it fed. Reality; an ugly mutt that no one wants and needs a loving forever home is the dog for me.

Meet Sam:
He was thrown out of a car widow who my son was driving behind and was going 40mph @ about 6 weeks old. Picked him up and he was OK. Gave him to me. He is one of the best dogs I have ever had the pleasure of being friends with.
Believe he is Boxer & German Shepard mix & Yes the cats love him.

I recently learned of a breed I have never heard of. The Small Munsterlander. Anyone have one or know anything about them?

The last dog I had was a Brittany many years ago. My wife told me once I was retired I could get a dog again since I would be home to take care of it.

So now I am trying to decide if I want a dog at this stage of life and then what kind. I like to hunt pheasants and quail although I can't hit a barn from 10 feet with a shotgun anymore.
Get yourself another bird dog, you will get out in the woods and have some fun and you won't be hurting the bird population. [emoji3]

It's the Akita, for me. Intuitively smart, fearless defender of his family and domain. Pound for pound, as strong a canine package as they come. Broke our hearts when he passed at age 14, so much so that we cannot bring ourselves to consider another dog. That feeling has not diminished in the 20 years since he left us.

My last two were Labs but I often think a mutt has the best characteristics of the dog breeds.

I don't know anyone running Munsterlanders but I read good things.

For the past 40 years there has always been an English setter or two in our home. My wife is saying no more pets, period, after my current two setters pass from this life. I'm thinking like her no more guns or cigar protestations I'm might ignore this one.

I have been thinking of changing breeds. My best friend and hunting buddy has been running Drahthaars. On pheasant they are machines. Another plus is he doesn't spend a couple hours combing and cutting burrs our of their coats.

Regardless of the size, a poodle is hard to beat. Breeds mixed with poodles generally exhibit the best of the poodle traits.

It has been eight years since this one left us.

The meanest dogs I've ever come across were poodles and chihuahuas. My grandmother had a miniature poodle that would eat you alive. Put her in the hospital more than once and was finally put down by a family member while she was in hospital. We told her it died suddenly (which was true), but she knew. An aunt had a pair of chihuahuas when I was a kid. Every time you went to her house they would attack. I kicked them across the room more than once to protect my ankles. They would just charge right back into the "fight." Got to where I would sit outside when we visited her so I didn't have to hurt them.

Having said that, I love most dogs and they seem to like me. When I'm at a get-together where dogs are present they seem to seek me out for attention even over their owners. I've had several kinds of dogs over the years, and loved them all. Currently we have three mutts that I call pinschorkahuahuas for fun. The mom was a chorkie (yorkie-chihuahua mix) and the father was a chipin (mini pinscher-chihuahua mix). Two are littermates and the third is their offspring since we had a litter when they were young because we waited too long to get them "fixed." Great, loving little mutts who wouldn't bite you if you tried to pull their legs off.

My best friend for 13 years. Best dog I ever had. Still deeply missed

My dad had a wonderful German Shorthair. Great duck hunter, lived 16 yrs. I have had mostly ranch type dogs, Australian Sheppdards, Queensland Heeler mix, Border Collie, Skeeter who was wonderful and lived 14 yrs., and now Peaches, half Border Collie and half Australian Shep. I think this is the smartest dog I have seen or had. We have another rescue dog, same cross as Peaches, but dumber than a fence post, and deaf. She came from a local ranch when the owners were put into living facilities. Wife couldn't say no. She is now 15 yrs., but still in good health, but the hearing.

All schnauzers's her, the late Madison, Calvin and Daisy, now we have Benji who after 2 1/2 hours still has PTSD from his prior owner's beatings. He will never trust non-residents.
