Your first vehicles

I got my first taste of driving on an old Jeep a neighbor kept at his farm. Drove it around his fields to get used to the manual trans. Next was a VW Karmann Ghia beloning to a buddy's father. We would roll it down the driveway in the middle of the night, start it on the street and go drive around.
With my permit, I practiced driving my family's '54 Ford wagon and then their '49 Cadillac.

The first car I bought with my own money was a '57 MGA roadster.

I jumped in with both feet with my first car upon my high school graduation in 1966. Dad and I went shopping at the local used car lot for something that would get me to college and back. Test drove a 1962 Pontiac Grand Prix with 421 Super Duty and then checked around the lot to find a 1963 Chevrolet Super Sport 409. Well there was no debate on which one to pick with the Beach Boys song still on the charts at the time. My father was a Pontiac man so was used to big bore V8s, but did not know about anything about muscle cars. I really enjoyed that Chevy and was sad to get rid of it, but being newly married in 1970 it was time to act my age!! I even got dad to spring for the new spray-on vinyl top which was all the rage in the late 1960s which went great with the convertible hardtop look of the '63 Chevys.

1. Learned to drive in my mom's 1980's Pontiac Bonneville and my grandfather's 1955 Chevy Cameo pickup.

2. First car was a 1988 Oldsmobile Delta 88 that my grandfather left to me when he passed. It was a great vehicle that was still going strong until it was lost in Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

If you still had that 63 409 in original condition, you could sell it and buy a nice house today.

When my grandmother quit driving I bought her 1965 VW Beetle from her. I took it into shop class at high school and replaced all the brakes and brake lines and new tires and then stripped it down and painted it . It turned out pretty good.
That was my first car and the one I learned to drive on.

All this has bought back a memory of the one that got away. When my father and I went to look for my first car, I just KNEW I had found it. A 1964 Falcon "Sprint", sort of a "pre Mustang" I suppose. Two door coupe, bucket seats, 289, three on the floor. Man I loved that car just sitting on the lot at Hechler Chevrolet. It was somewhere around $900 IIRC. While I was drooling over it, my father took one look and said "That car is a ticket getter boy. Find another one." That's how the dull, plain black four door Falcon came to be my first car. But I never forgot that Sprint. ;)

PS. Dad was no doubt right.

first non tractor I drove was my aunt's 62/63? Buick - wildcat V8... I was 9... First stick shift was my late grandpa's 65 GMC... I was 11... straight six one barrel 3 on the tree manual choke.. the first car I purchased was a 1967 Firebird convertible big block.. image is my car part way thru the current owners restoration.. looks way better now.. lol no photos of the old Buick....
