your 'run for your life' guns

Fun to think about.

First choice was the two main guns I take to work every day, a Colt 1911 of some persuasion in .45 ACP and my employer's Colt M-16, or my Colt AR-15 SP-1. As reliable as my fireplace and highly familiar and comfortable with both.

Then I thought about the problems the .223/5.56X45 has in the penetration/stopping power area, and the need to forage when my Snickers bars are all gone, and decided to up-grade to something in .308/7.62X51.

An FN-FAL variant, most likely my inch-pattern Enfield L1A1 (British Army version, pebble-grain nylon furniture). I have a Williams top cover scope mount with a Leupold 2X7 scope that slides on and off with pretty good zero maintainence. 20 round mags.

Handgun would be Colt stainless lightweight Commander in .45 ACP.

I just painted 3 rooms in the house over the Xmas break, and my wife is finally happy with the colors, so I'm not goin anywhere!

And I think the STI 1911 along with a Bushmaster M4 will keep the Zombies away

I've heard these buggers have a soft spot under their chin so . . .

Noveske N4 Light Recce Basic with TA01 ACOG and a Glock 19. Beaucoup loaded mags for each.

Blades not limited by OP so . . RAT 7, CS Recon Tanto and RAT 3 cause this is gonna get ugly. LOL

.22 lr is a great idea Billhud. Thanks to Gunkid education ( :-O ) a .22 conversion kit for the AR!

Thank you all for your replies---I appreciate that so many of you saw through the silliness of the scenario I presented.

Like many of you, I am really concerned about a collapse of social order, whether its related to a weather event (Hurricane Katrina), a 9/11 type event from forces unfriendly or scornful of our way of life (inside AND outside of our nation), increasing crime rates spawned by unemployment, a global financial collapse, or little green men from a galaxy far far away.

It is clear that some of you have thought this through pretty carefully and already have made a plan of some sort. I am in rural eastern NC, far away from any urban centers. I am also an avid deer and small game hunter, so my choice of my Remington 870 is only limited by the variety of shells I could carry for it so that I could harvest game and feed my family----yet still have a very effective defensive weapon. I am a country boy.......and like the man says, country boys can survive. As for my handgun choice of the M&P .45----I have almost 1000 rounds of shells tucked away (not sure how I could carry all those 'running for my life' but I figure .45 acp rounds would have some value to barter and trade, as well as easier to find if I ever run out). Other factors for the M&P .45 are that I hit what I point it at, in the few months I have owned it has never jammed or stuttered in any way, and with 10+1 capacity it might serve me better than any of my wheelguns or 1911's. Plus there is the .45 factor------an ultra reliable fight stopper.

My scenario was limited to 2 or 3 firearms on hand--------as opposed to the weapons I would want available to me. If little green men ever do visit, I would opt for the USS Ronald Reagan-------inclusive of all its contents!!! Thanx again for participating in this thread.

Im with the crowd of im not running. We all have roles in our house of who does what and who is responsible for each activity. I have been accused of being paranoid by some but you will never catch me and mine by surprise. And lets try to sign the little green guys up with the NRA and get them registered to vote, when the other side crys foul the ACLU will back us up anyway, Right?

Chris K's concerns are not at all paranoid and I truly believe they are about to become a reality in the not too far future. The readiness of each person will determine if they become the victims of mayhem or survivors. Tough times bring an uptick of violence and crime. Fasten your seatbelts.

Now that's a great post.

I have been where you are for some time. You do a great job of laying out the pieces on the board for all to see. As for "[wondering] where this is going to end up," one place only: WORLD WAR. This one will be fought here, on our very own soil, too. We used to say "The Three 'Gs' made America free: God, Guns, and Guts." Well, yes. But there was another pretty big "G" that most everyone somehow overlooked: GEOGRAPHY.

Those oceans and those miles of airspace are no longer the barriers they once were. Subs, aircraft, and ICBMs have made war a just minutes away thing. You speak of the probabilityof SHTF/TEOTWAWKI here in the CONUS and you are right. Look to Germany between the 1st and 2nd World Wars and you will see US today. Germany had serious problems at home long before they stepped into their neighbors' yards.

Guns and ammo are fine, but shelter, water, and food are gold-- "When All Hell Breaks Loose: The Stuff You Need to Survive When Disaster Strikes" (The title of Cody Lundin's excellent, essential and very entertaining book on the subject--cheaper than a box of ammo and at least if not more useful).

READ. READ. READ. The toolbox that you need to stock first is the one that sits on top of your shoulders. Knowledge and skills trump equipment. Take a first aid class or two. Spend a week or two honing your "when the power goes out and there's no gas in the car" skills.

Do you REALLY want to know what you need and don't, and in what order? Then jump up and run outside right now and continue away from your home as if it no longer existed. No, you do not get to stop for anything. From where you sit to and through the nearest door.

Shoes on your feet? Coat on your back? Hat? Gloves?Car keys? Those MBRs, EBRs, 1911s, cans of ammo still in the safe upstairs? How much food, water, warmth are you carrying? Bug out bag? How far can you walk for how long for how many days carrying how much before you are toast? A mile? Five? Twenty? A day? Two? Five? A full week? Indefinitately? THINK. Be realistic and honest with yourself. Blisters? Chafed raw yet? Sunburned or frostbitten yet? Soaking wet and shivering yet?

I said read, Start with "The Coming of the Third Reich"
by Richard Evans. This is about how Hitler and his Nazis used politics and the system to take over a nation and society by popular vote. The parallels to our current state of affairs are downright frightening.

"Ivan's War: Life and Death in the Red Army, 1939-1945" by Catherine Merridale. Takes you from the Revolution to and through t War via the Russian soldier's/citizen's perspective. Unbelieveable hardships and horrors. If you never fully understood why communism is evil this book will fix that.

Finally, start with this take on how it all fell into place and then to pieces in WWII-era Europe +/- ten years. This is US, friends. Right here, right now.

Sorry this is so long, but I believe time is short. Even if you shelter in place--more often than not the most sound if not only sane choice--keep it simple, multifunctional, and light enough to carry. I gave up on having "what is best" and went with what works; I pared it down to the 1894c in .357 Mag, a M686p, and the M642 that is always in my pocket. Knife, multitool, fire, water, food, shelter, SOAP, clean spare socks and skivvies, maps . . . and the knowledge, skills, and abilities you'll need to stay ahead of those who have no KSAs and equipment, other than the will to take from those who do.

Godspeed, one and all.

As far as our part of the world goes, I really dont see a foreign power trying us on our own soil except for different forms of terrism.
I do see the high possibility of social breakdown where nobody trusts the goverment where your money is worthless etc. I just see no way possible the country getting out of this mess of createing money to the tune of trillions that doesnt exist. At some point things have to cave in! If all of your lifes saveings wont buy a dimes worth of food because no one trusts the money, who is going to even go to work? Also, who would even join the military? I can see where nobody owns anything that you cant defend within your own house.
You might have once owned 4 rentals but now dont as you cant pay the taxs. You might have a bank figure of millions, but it is worthless!
Why would a cop go to work if his pay check is counterfit?
Overall, maybe not the type people that are members of this type site, but the average citizens out there are spoiled and soft and clueless.
Years ago we used to laugh at the backwardness of thrid world countrys and say, the mideast. But yet watch the news. People that they say the average income is something like $300 a year have been toteing $1,000 rifles on their backs for quite sometime now! You see 12 year old kids over there with guns!
Our kids only know video games and how to wear their cap backwards and have their pants hanging on the bottom of their ass!
I dont see "red dawn", here, but I do see people forageing, stealing, snipeing, a total breakdown in law and order, and vigilante groups.
How we recover from that and what type of goverment emerges is the big question to me.
P.S. I dont belive it will be a liberal one!

YA BUDDY. Preach it, brother.

Those same baggy pants arsed video gaming dimbulbs are the progeny of the "average spoiled and soft and clueless" birth adults (they are NOT parents, and even calling them adults is a stretch) who raised their right hands when the media ringmasters pointed to 0bambi and said "This one?"

They are takers who've been taken by one of their own in the greatest swindle since Eve handed Adam the apple.

In a shtf scenario, I'd rather stay home, and defend my high ground. If I HAD to bug out, quick and dirty-like, I've got several of those large plastic totes from Wal-mart all over my house. I'd FILL one with guns and ammo, one with food and drink, and the rest with warm clothing and other useful survival things. It'd be a helter-skelter hurry-scurry operation, kind of like Jed and the boys at Robert's dad's sporting goods store, just outside of Calumet, CO.

I'll send the wife and son out the door and into the bull mountains to the relatives ranch. I'll grab the mini-14 and my model 19 4" 357 drop the prepacked black sea bags in the bed truck and head after them. Come to think of it the ammo has been in those bags for over a year, maybe I should change it out.

I pray that it doesn't come to that but ignorance is for liberals.

I could function quite nicely with BMC's selections. I can also understand the value of weapons that are not turned into one shooters, by the loss of magazines. But I'm not leaving known high ground till it's burned or flooded out from under me. A roof and a fireplace weigh too much to carry? There's plenty of clean water available here. Soft pine enough to burn for a century. And since the G wouldn't be enforcing hunting seasons any longer, more game than one could eat in three lifetimes. My only worry would be whether I could manage to be one of the first looting the state operated liquor stores here?

Justbob- outstanding post thanks. If there are any additional books you consider usefull and "realistic" please share. I've seen my share of bullshit books over the years and have pretty much given up weeding through crap in order to glean some knowledge.

best,
Greg
