What is the fascination with zombies? There's two threads in this forum (this makes three), one about what gun to use against zombies, and the other for a zombie guide. I thought that after Michael Jackson joined his companions from "Thriller," the zombie fad would be over.

No way. Zombie movies are where it's at. Plenty of books, video games (Left 4 Dead, Urban Dead), and movies (Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead) are about zombies. Cheapo horror movies. Classics.

It's the result of a younger group of firearm enthusiasts that are posting here.
It's prevalent on other forums as well.

It's old hat and I wish it wouldn't develope here.

Hey, you have to be prepared in the event of a nuclear and or zombie apocalypse.

I love the zombie threads, and I'm on the wrong side of 50.

I don't think anyone thinks its an actual possibility that they'll need to defend against a horde of real zombies - but it is a fun mental exercise. You take the basics of zombie lore - head shots only, slow and shambling (classic zombies) or fast and scary (more recent zombies), attacking in packs, inability to plan or climb, and so on - and figure which gun would be the best bet.

It is a good mental exercise. It does not have to be zombies, it just has to be a problem that needs solving that has a twist. Zombies are a good choice because they represent several major obstacles that need to be overcome.

1. They cannot be stopped or killed by conventional means. They are already dead. They need to be immobilized, and that takes a precision shot. That takes more time than would be needed to kill something that is alive. Time is not a luxury you can enjoy.

2. Their numbers are overwhelming. You would run out of ammo, food, and water long before you could get them all to stop. Therefore, you would need to keep moving and re-supplying as you go. This is another logistical problem.

There is an excellent short story about a plantation that is about to be overun by waves of army ants. The battle to survive against something that has minimal ability to plan attacks, yet has overwhelming numbers and the will to destroy anything in its path becomes quite difficult. It's a set of circumstances that requires a great deal of thought in order to solve the problem and survive.

Once I started reading the ant story, I could not stop reading until I finished it. The zombie thing is the same type of scenario, with bigger army ants!

Here is the story.

As others have said... mental exercise. Usually, a "zombie uprising/zombie apocalypse" is used as a tongue-in-cheek euphamism for any emergency survival situation, and allows you to plan for a "S*** Hits The Fan"-type scenario while still having a bit of fun.

It's a slightly more light-hearted take on the older practice of preparing for "The Russian Invasion" or "The Bomb".

It is also a moniker used to describe the criminal hordes that would likely rise in the event of a complete social breakdown...a very, very good reason to have guns on hand.

Also, Zombies are not protected by political correctness via the ACLU like japs, krauts, ragheads, greasers, honkies, hillbillies, cowboys, Indians, sodbusters, sheep farmers, liberals, etc, etc. Therefore you can kill, maime, mutilate, criticize, condemn, or cuss them all you like and no one will care.

(No offense intended towards any group or individual who believe they may or may not be described above or who perceives the comments as a cultural or racial slur when it was actually mentioned for illistration purposes only.)

I like Zombies too.
You can use the poor zombies as a metaphor without being shouted down in this miserable PC society.
Go Zombies!

Well, Faulkner beat me to it and said it better than I did.

Remember seeing a movie with that theme many, many years ago. May have even been in black & white. Made a big impression on me as a kid. Forced me think about not just ants but dealing with more the abstract issue of merciless, unrelenting & overwhelming opposition.

Leiningen versus the ants, is the title of the classic short story Wheelgunner refers to. A Google search brings this up online for your reading pleasure and edification...

"The Naked Jungle", starring Charlton Heston as Leningen.
The Naked Jungle (1954)

The story was written by Carl Stephenson and published in Esquire sometime before 1940.

Zombie gun has become a somewhat tongue in cheek name for a defensive firearm - usually a carbine or shotgun, though sometimes a pistol. Generally it is used in reference to the type of firearm known as an "evil black rifle". Really, it's no more alarming than terming the same guns as for "social purposes" and has the same sense of humor.

There's a site called Zombie Squad that takes the zombie uprising as metaphor for most any emergency, the simple basis being that if one is ready for zombies, you're ready for anything.

Anyway, I've had some health issues and was briefly hospitalized thanks to problems with a medication. This came on top of family and marital issues (the two year old apparently is indeed autistic) so I haven't been around.
