I was tied four all with 1911s in .45 ACP and 9mm Luger. A recent 9mm 1911 thread had a sidebar discussion about the 1911 used in Magnum PI. Short version - a 1911 in .45 ACP was used in the pilot and a couple early episodes, followed by a Star Model B pinch hitting until a 1911 in 9mm Luger began to be used. 9mm blanks were just easier to obtain.

Fast forward a week or so and I ran across this Government Model in 9mm Luger. The serial dates it to 2012 and it’s a 1991 series model O1992. Other than the 3 dot sights and the flat mainspring housing, it feels and handles like a Government Model

It came complete with two magazines, the box, paperwork and hang tag and appeared to have been fired very little based on the bolt face and locking lugs on the barrel.

I probably more than quadrupled the round count this afternoon. It was 100 percent reliable with 124 gr RN, 115 gr HAP and 115 gr XTP ammo with the Colt magazines, my Kimber magazines and my MecGar magazines. Accuracy was also quite good. Not Gold Cup accurate but very good 3” at 25 yards combat accuracy.

I've been debating with myself hard as to get a 9mm 1911 or not. Gun show in a couple of weeks. If I run across one like that, I think the debate will be over.

Go for it. Back in the 1990s I came across a Series 70 Government Model in 9mm that was really well customized. It had low mounted Bo-Mar sights, a National Match bushing, a thinned hammer and locked up like a bank vault. It was at the Monroeville, PA gun show and it looked like it was being spotlighted on the seller's table. I did some mental calculations and figured that the asking price was less than the cost of the work. It came home with me (through my friendly FFL holder of course).

It became an absolute keeper, including through unemployment, when I used it at a club IPSC match to put a double tap on the the "A" zone the size of a pop can of a hostage target.

9mm in the Luger is one thing; a spring control mechanism feed / the 1911 is the perfect design for this German designed cartridge. the 1911 can feed with many loads !

Get a 38 Super barrel and magazines and you'll really be set.

I did that with a Springfield Range Master. CDNN had 38 Super barrels (Sig brand, correct ramp for the SA) on sale (may still have them) for $39.00 and while it wasn't exactly drop in for perfect function, a little rounding of the barrel locking lugs wasn't all that difficult.

Not exactly extending myself shooting 38 Super, I don't like losing the brass, but having the dual caliber is a neat option.

I like the 9mm, but the only dual caliber 1911 I own is a 38 Super/9x23. I have a few 1911s. 9mm commander & full size, 38 super commander & full size, 10mm Delta elite, Ace .22, .45 acp commander & full size, 2 Colt .22 conversions and 1 22 Commander conversion. Still looking for a Colt in .40 S&W, I know they made them and they are out there just haven't found one yet. I used to buy and wanted dual caliber guns but would rather have a pistol in each caliber.
