did I overpay for my 6906?

I just got a 6906. Owner never fired it, and it was given to him by his friend who also never fired it, but he did clean it when he bought it. He lists it on gunbroker for a starting bid of $625 and a Buy Now for $650. I bought it for 650. Overnight from Florida to PA was $49, and my FFl charges me $20. So now i have $720 for a NIB 6906. I sold my 3913, mags, and other accerorises for it for $700, so I guess it pretty muc a straight up trade, but I got to thinking that I just spent $720 on a S&W! That's H&K money! I'm happy with the purchase, but are prices really that out of control? The cheaper ones i saw looked OK, but I hate taking possession of a gun that doesn't look new, even if it isn't. It performed great at the range, by the way!

You found one practically NIB, so if you're happy with your purchase then that's all that matters.

The 6906 is one of S&W's best-ever pistols in my opinion.

You paid extra because you were buying a new or nearly new gun in mint condition. There aren't a lot of them around so there is a premium. In the long run it only matters that you are happy with the purchase. Personally I would rather have S&Ws than HKs.

Yep - you overpaid, but someone overpaid for your 3913 too so you look to be breaking about even.

S&W Auto prices are all over the place. I recently bought a 98% condition 3913TSW (no rail, mag coutout in frame) for $375 + tax and a 3914 NIB for the same price tax included. I've seen these guns go for significantly more with average price around $500 or so for a lightly used gun.

Well, I'd say you paid too much for the like new 6906... But on the other hand someone else paid too much for your 3913 and he's probably asking someone the same question you are asking here.

FWIW, I have both the 6906 and the 3913LS and I like the 6906 better, and if it came down to having to sell one or the other the LS would be on the block..

Here's a suggestion..

Buy yourself a couple of 15rd 5906 mags along with a couple of S&W +2 grip extensions and you will find yourself with a better "feeling" grip (or I did), with three extra rounds at no cost.

The 15rd 5906 mags w/grip extenders will fit, function, and look perfect in your 6906. In fact I like the way the mag "feels" in the hand so much better than the factory 12rd fingertip extension 6906 that I just put those suckers away.

I have a 5906 w/Crimson Trace Lasergrips in my nightstand for my "bump in the night" pistol choice, and the 6906 for occasional cc duty.. I like having 16rds available in a carry weapon.

FWIW CDNN was selling NIB 6906's (w/one mag) for $399.99 last year (5906's too), and 3913LS NIB w/2 mags for $499.00. I bought one of each at that time..

But shortly thereafter all of the NIB models were sold out, and it seems prices on firearms in general have increased this past year (and wonder why?)...

It all boils down to that "I'm happy with the deal" comment you made... If YOU are happy, then it was a good deal. (As they say on "Deal or no Deal).

I believe any good 3rd gen Smith pistol will last most folks a lifetime, and probably when you are "deader than disco" your heirs will still be guarding the homestead with it.

Crap, just shoot and enjoy the sucker.... They are meking any more 6906's and imo they are fine pistols..

Hey, the way it works is the seller determines what he/she thinks the item is worth, the item is advertised at that price and it's up to each individual potential buyer if the price is reasonable to him/her.

So you knew what you wanted to get out the the 3913, the buyer apparently agreed with you that the gun was worth that price and that's just "bidness'"...

FWIW this past year I was taken deathly ill with the "need 3rd gen Smith pistols" syndrome and so I bought a new 5906/6906/3913LS/CS9 and a slightly used CS45.. I love them all, and IF I were to sell any of them I'd certainly ask a lot more for them than I paid last year.

My CS9 has become a particular cc favorite with the CS45 slightly behind....

No offense taken. Gun prices have jumped recently. While organizing my gun transaction folder (I keep a record of every sale and purchase), I saw I paid $345 OTD for that 3913 back in 2004. It's not 2004 anymore, just like this 6906 I bought would have been less. Life is short.

Did you make any money on the 3913? Assuming you did, you should discount that from the price of the 6906.... sometimes you're the windshield, sometimes the bug.

Yeah. When all is said and done, it all came out pretty even. Like I said, I spent $345 on the 3913 5 years ago, and sold it for $560. Even with shipping and FFL fees on my end, I made $145.

this is the truth... I picked up a LNIB 3913NL for my wife earlier this year at a price that was high... she is happy & I am too. Don't worry about the money, you won't remember $$ if the gun is what you wanted. Life is too short to worry about $50/100 when you're purchasing a quality product.

I agree. Suppose you played with the gun for a few months and then decided it was not the right one for you. You go and sell it for $100 less. In my opinion the $100 was money well spent for what you learned and the entertainment value you had while owning the gun.

Like you, I recently did about an even swap, traded in a good condition 6" .44mag Anaconda for a 6" S&W mod 16-4(.32H&R mag) in very nice condition.
Some of my friends thought I was off. The Colt just didn't ring my bell at all, shot it maybe 3 times in 4yrs. The 16-4 gets my juices going, put more rounds thru it in 4wks than I ever put thru the Colt.
If you're happy w/your deal I'd say you did well.

I think I'm missing something here.

The buyer of the gun got the gun and 3 mags. The other 3 mags and the mag holder were sold seperately. The gun buyer was given first crack at the extras, but didn't want them.

Yes you grossly overpaid, but not to worry because I'm willing to purchase your now used 6906 for $325 (shipped of course) and cut your loss almost in half! You can thank me later.

They don't make them anymore, so you can't just order a new one. A fair price for a good gun is what a seller will take, and a buyer will pay. Bought one a few months ago myself. Would have to check my records to see what I paid for it.

Love this Forum, no matter what anyone does, everyone helps buck him up-not that this deal was bad, no deal is bad when you wind up with what you really want. I overpaid last year for a Registered Magnum #355, built in 1935 of course, and owned by a really well known person. Cost me almost 2 grand, but it had been refinished at the factory.
