Legal method to ship loaded ammo?

Hello folks,
I wish to unload some .30-40 Krag and .44-40 factory ammo that I have gathering dust, but don't know the proper (Legal) way to ship it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

UPS can/will ship for you BUT you must have an external label that looks like this :
ORM-D
small arms ammunition

I affix a couple to each package.
I created one on an Excel spread sheet and then cut it out and taped it on the box!
You can buy the labels over the internet but this way is much cheaper.

Pack it in as small a pkg as possible -- box dimensions are as painful as wright when it comes to the cost of UPS ground.

Maybe it's just me, but it's funny how the Govt-regulated USPS doesn't allow shipment of ammo, which leaves us to hugely expensive alternatives... Ammo is no more unstable to ship than a rock. I stopped buying from CheaperThanDirt when they added a HAZMAT fee.

The UPS Customer Counter should have the lables,,,but just in case they don't,,do like 505 says and print some up yourself and tape one on the address lable side of the box.
I've even seen boxes where it was mearly hand written on and highlighted.

NO HazMat fee is due on loaded ammo (or primed brass). Only on powder and primers,,and those must be shipped by a licensed HazMat shipper anyway.
No special license needed to ship the loaded ammo. Just declare it and lable it properly.
They'll probably demand that you put an adult signiture required on delivery sicker on it also (an additional fee).

One other thing,,,I made the mistake once of saying I had handgun ammo in a package,,should have just stated 'small arms cartridges/ammo'.
The fact that I stated 'handgun' (ammo) made them want to send it overnite delivery because of their rule to send handguns themselves overnite.
Got it straightened out, but it took a while and a look at the rules with the suprv'r.
Ammo is only supposed to go ground service anyway.

Sometimes it's a battle in there with the service counter clerks.

Thanks for the great replies! My HP Printer and software was able to copy and alter a label to fit my boxes, and UPS is just down the way. Now I just have to sell this old stuff and get going.

You can even draw your own ORM-D "sticker" right on the box. Works fine.

I get ammo shipped regularly thru UPS ground and there's no external indication that it's ammo. Pretty much just a normal shipping label. Is this something different cause it's a private person?

No, every ammo shipment I've ever received had the ORM-D label, whether private party or business. I don't know if the shippers charge more for the packages labeled as such? If so, maybe your seller is saving a few $.

Shipping without the label can get you a long stay in a State run Motel.

No extra charge for shipping ammo (no HazMat fee). Maybe the shipper is not declaring the contents as ammo when shipped,,so no sticker is being placed onto the box.

They just like to know the contents so it can be segregated from certain other flamables, oxidizers and the like when the cargo is packed for transport. Plus it avoids the possibility of the package ever making it onto an aircraft for transit which violates some Fed Transportation and HazMat regs I believe..

This is pretty funny, but every Christmas I get my wife a big bottle of Madagasgar ? Vanilla extract. it is always boxed in an ORM-D package,maybe because of the alcohol I dont know,unless vanilla has some explosive characteristic. Bob

There's ORM-D -Consumer Commodity ,,,and then there's ORM-D-Small Arms Cartridges.

Overall, I believe ORM-D is the lowest class rating of HazMat classification for shipment, needing no special license or paperwork to be filed by the person who actually puts the item into the system. Declaration of the contents is needed though.

The Consumer Commodity can be anything from beer to perfume and on. The HazMat rules are very strict. The fines imposed on shipping companys for violations are very high.

oops my bad. I took a look at one of the shipping boxes. The 'shipping' label was what I thought you were refering to. They do have a small ODM-R on the side of the box.

Heck I used to work in a fire Dept on a major Intl Airport. If you knew all the stuff they could ship on aircraft you would be amazed. I have seen Air to Air missles on aircraft...sans the warhead of course. Solid fuel rockets though?? and you can carry ammo on a plane as checked baggage...but there is a limit on weight and of course..extra charges now days. If I travel on Aircraft I usually buy the ammo I will need at the place where I am going to shoot. A friend goes to Argentina quite often to buy"antiques" and he ships shotshell ammo down in containers so he can go shoot doves etc.

I think it has more to do with the packaging than anything else. Customer packaging is probably suspect in it's strength for shipment. Not being able to inspect every box going aboard, they just ship them ground. Just a guess though..

All kinds of strange stuff gets shipped by air. The type of thing they want to prevent is another ValueJet type of situation where simple mislabling caused the small controllable fire to go out of control.

Larger quantitys of ammo are routinely shipped by air in factory shipping boxes/containers that are HazMat and TransDept approved.
Ammo that comes aboard in checked baggage gets at least in their minds, an inspection and can be rejected for the flight if they want to.

One shooter I know got his ammo (checked baggage) held back because it was loaded with black powder. No loose BP in the kit, just loaded metalic rifle ammo, but loaded with BP.
Never heard from him what the outcome of the stir he was creating over it.

Good idea just to buy your ammo at your destination if you can. Saves hassle. A friend just went on a trip and shipped his shotgun out to himself to avoid the trouble of plane travel with it. He figured he'd buy what ammo he needed there. Everbodys got 12ga shells for sale. Seemed alot simpler.
I'll probably do it that way if I ever have the need.

ORM-D labels can be found free via Google to save time.

I always have UPS do a pickup, which costs $3 extra, to avoid the 'dumb clerk' issue, plus it is cheaper for me than driving to service center.
