Ok, So usualy my 15 22 runs through cci and Federal with zero issues. With that being said, I went for my usual Knob Creek weekend range trip. I ran threw a few hundred rounds in the mags that I had pre loaded the night before. Once I opened a new 550 bulk pack of federal, I had the occasional FTF, or stovepipe issues. This was new to me,well after I ran through the remington .22 ammo I had when I first purchashed my rifle.

Anyway, upon further inspection of the ammo, I noticed a darker than usual black ring around some of the ammo. Some deep, some not so much, but still had the tip of the bullet at a slight angle. Below I have posted a picture of one of my FTF's. On the left is a pic of a FTF/FTE, on the right is a bullet that came directly out of the bulk box, and had never been loaded into a mag at all. Has any one else seen this kind of problems before, regardless of ammo branding? If you notice the deep rings are not inthe usual place for the bullet to fly from the casing during the firing procedure. They are actualy at a angle as well. Instead of straight across the ammo.

After finding this out, I grabbed a hadfull of ammo out of the box, and there were around 20-25% give or take out of the handfull that had this issue on all of them. I closed the box top, gave the box a shake to mix up the ammo, and did the same test. It provided about the same results as before. The total of ammo fired from the freshly opened bulk pack of Federal was about 150 rounds out of 550. Any info/experiences would be appreciated. I have since went through the rest of the box, and found "at least" 25% or more to have this issue. I have removed them and will continue to fire the rest that appear to be in firing condition. The picture I took is slightly crooked. But if you look at the bullet onthe left, you can see a "slight" angle to the tip of the bullet. Where as the other one is fine.

EDIT: Well it seems it gets worse. I was going threw the same box more carefully, now that I am home, and not at the range. The 2nd and 3rd pictures are of ammo from the same box as the deep grooved bullets. In the 2nd picture yoiu can see the bullet has not only MASSIVE corrosion, but it continues down the side of the ammo. I know this is a bad box of ammo, but the corroson aside, what caused the deep grooves in the majority of the defective ones? The SAD part is I bought this particular box AS it was jsut coming off the pallet and about to be loaded/restocked at the sporting goods section. Ive seen 10 year old+ ammo that wasnt as bad as this.

I've run about 25k Federal Bulk throuh mine and have had very good experience with them, maybe 20 FTF/FTE's total until this weekend. Purchased another 10 boxes recently and this weekend had about 10 all out of the same box. I didn't examine them very closely, just pulled back the charging handle and moved on, but as I was reloading mags did notice that many of the bullets were more dirty and dingy looking than usual. I'll check tonight and see if the entire box is that way. Appears that Federal might have had a quality spill.....

I do understand that the federal is inexpensive so it is easier to go out and shoot 500 rounds but I have found that if I want consistant performance that I have to pay up for the better quality ammo. From the photos it looks like the quality control standards for the cheaper ammo are not as good as they are for more expensive rounds. I guess there is a reason why they can sell 500 rounds for that low price.
I use CCI and I do regret that I cannot get 500 rounds as cheap as the federal but I never have any problems and I always get nice tight consistant shot groups.

I have had the exact same good experience up untill this weekend. Granted it wasnt a big deal that kept me fromhaving a good time at the range. But still this is the FIRST time I have had any problems with federal bulk packs. Im not any where near the 25 k amount. But I only shoot CCI mini mags and Federal bulk packs, and Im "around" 2k or slighty over in total ammo down the barrel.

One of their loading dies may have gotten incorrectly prepped or not properly cleaned. The rounds look like the gas checks or the case crimp weren't done correctly.

It looks like some solvent or something got on the round. Hoppe's will do that to copper in a matter of hours easily.

Call them up. It may be a manufacturing issue they're not aware of.

CCI minimags run me about $30 per 500, which I don't consider that much worse than federal, for $10 or so the quality is worth it to me

Second this one. Yeah the Fed Bulk was cheaper but I had a lot more problems with it than Mini-Mags. Actually I haven't had one problem with Mini-Mags in any of my guns. I think it's one of my favorite rounds.

I buy the Winchester 333 packs. Its alot more accurate in my gun than the Federal and has a failure rate of less than 10 in 1000 so far.

Those rds that r greenish in color have been wet or damp... id call fed and see what they will do cause it may be a batch that they allready have a recall on

I haven't seen this particular problem with the Federal bulk pack ammo, but once had FTF issues with a lot of Remington .22RF that apparently had poorly distributed priming compound. A letter to Remington describing the problem, along with the box labels IDing the lot, brought an apology and replacement ammo forthwith. I 'd guess you'll get a similar response from Federal. Ammo companies have been working overtime to keep up with demand, and at current high-speed production rates, the can crank out a batch of faulty ammo in a hurry. (Ask anyone who uses a progressive press...)

I use the Fed 325 rd (?) Match Grade bulk boxes, very little problem in either the 15-22 or the Browning Buck Mark.

I don't think I've seen CCI MiniMags at $30 for 500 rds. In fact MM's are hard to find anywhere around here other than WalMart.

DR&U

Federal bulk is my main 22 plinking ammo. Very few FTF's in many 1000's fired.

That said, I recently had severe problems with Remington Golden Bullets bulk....10 to 15% FTF. Contacted Remington - Said they had a primer paste problem - They sent replacement ammo and paid to pick up and return defective product.

At that time, Remington said Federal was experiencing the same type of problem. Might want to drop them a line. At the least, they should replace your stock.

I once had a prob with Fed bulk. I contacted them. They asked for the #s off the box and a few samples. They made it right. No problems since but I keep an eye on all ammo that goes into my guns.

I say give them a chance to do the right thing.

you won't find em in 500 boxes, but you can buy 5 (100) count boxes, at approximately $6 a piece. gander mtn is $6 sale price, $7 regular price. same for cabelas. and that is a large retailer, so i'm sure they can be had cheaper elsewhere.

I too have noticed some unreliability recently. Never had a problem before but couple weekends ago I noticed after about 10 or good shots fired, the next five were very VERY quiet, so much so that after each fired rd I checked the bolt to make sure it properly reset. Also, I always check ea rd as I load it because sometimes in bulk you'll get a simi deformed rd. And I've been tossing a lot more than usual lately.

Good to know. I've been using the Fed 500 bulk and no problems. But haven't opened the latest that I bought - will have to check it out.

My WalMart has MiniMags for 6.49 for the 100 count box

My last box of 550 fed bulk look like the Remington 550 i used as a test. Every time i reloaded a mag i tossed 2-3 and on average 3 were very quiet. I used 6 boxes of the federal lighting 50rd box that wally world sell for $1.47. Not one issue with them so i'm going to stick to them for a while. plus it's cheaper than the federal 550 bulk.

.0294/round for lighting @ 1.47/box
.0344/round for fed bulk @ 18.97/box

Almost get 100 more rounds of lighting for same price as fed 550. Lighting FTW

+1 on the Federal Lightning. Too bad is isn't always available at any of my local WM's.

They are hard to find in stock. I have a friend that works there and lets me know when what ever i need comes in. :D
