I knew that would get your attention. ;)

So today I took possession of the 66-4 (3") that I won in a GB auction. The gun looks great, came in original box, I couldn't be happier. The first thing I did when I got home was take the grips off and perform a thorough inpection and cleaning, as I always do with a new-to-me gun. Under the LH grip panel I noticed a little round sticker with the number 43 on it. I scraped off this sticker and realized it was actually a sticker over another sticker - the bottom sticker having the number 38 on it. Under the stickers I noticed "it". It seems the stickers were covering a large stamped letter G. This in itself would have meant nothing to me. But to the left of the G was the letter N, as in NG. Having worked in machine shops all of my adult life, I am very familiar with what NG stands for. Some times refered to as NFG. Someone aparently stamped the grip frame of my 66 with the acronym for No Good!

Has anyone ever seen this before? The only thing that I can think is that the gun had a flaw, somewhere in the machining process which was either repaired or ruled to be acceptable, at which time they tried to hide the NG stamp with an inspection sticker. I would love to hear other theories as to what this could mean. Either way, I am extremely happy with the gun and find this more of a humorous character trait than anything to cause me any concern. Here's some photos I took. You can see the little numbered stickers to the lower right in the first picture. Also, it's worth noting that I added the Eagle Boot Grips - the gun came with the black Uncle Mikes that are correct for this model.

Yup that's what it means. Send it to me for disposal.

Seriously, very nice acquisition.

A very fine revolver! A 3" Model 66 is hard to beat.

Girv, that'll teach you to peel off the inspection stickers.

In all the time I've had Smiths I've never paid any attention to
any inspectors marks.Or removed any inspection stickers for that matter.

You got me curious so, I pulled the grips off my 66-4 and there it was.........
The letters Z L , along with a whole bunch of other stuff I don't understand.

But, boy-howdy, does that 66-4 ever shoot.
At 15 yards on a 5" swinging plate, bong,bong,bong,bong,bong,
Well, you get the idea.

Enjoy your new heater! I've never seen a standard production 3"model 66-4.
It's pretty special.
By the way, your julian date of 4 316 places manufacture in November 1994.
Which jives with the BSF serial prefix.

Oh, and tighten down that rear sight leaf screw, your rear sight is stickin up a bit.
, ,in picture #3,

Regards
Allen Frame

Excellent score!! it's a beauty.
i've got a 3" -4. ser. CAA80xx, shipped Nov '94. and after reading your post i had to remove the grips and see what was there. "Y" is clearly visible, and the inspection sticker (37) was easily lifted (and put back in place) to reveal what was under it, "J".

NG = Neal Geronimo...he is the one who serrated your backstrap and rounded off any sharp corners and inspected the raw frame before sending it on down the line. Still works but not in the shop anymore, I hear.

What a beautiful piece. I love those grips and have the on a number of my guns. Perfect balance. What ever you paid, it was worth it!

Very cool. Looks like I was way off in my assumption. With others reporting two letters on their grip frames, it now makes perfect sense that they are initials of someone that worked on the gun.

Thanks for the kind replies.

great info!!
who would "Y J" be??

Just think-for half that price you could have had a 3" SP-101 that's twice as strong, well built and can take a steady diet of full bore 357 rounds without shooting loose.:D

I'd choose this gun over a bag of SP-101's.

:D...no kidding. i bought a 101 as a gift for a relative who insisted that the SP 101 is THE best thing that ever had a trigger..and speaking of trigger, it was horrible. must have been a 100 lb. pull. no thanks.
