Newbie with a Sigma Question

Its a gun so it is as un-safe as you want it to be. Now a nerf football, that is "safe".

I am new to the forum and this is my first pistol. I have owned and shot revolvers but decided to try the Sigma 40. What ammo would you recommend for target shooting and also for defense.
I am a Professional Land Surveyor and spend a lot of time outdoors as a one man survey crew.
Thanks
Stan

stan, welcome to the forum!

I don't own a 40 cal of any flavor so I can't comment on the ammo, but many here do. I'm sure you'll get recommendations shortly.

Enjoy your sigma.

Welcome to the forum. I just picked one up myself, and it shoots better than the 9VE that I have been carrying, so I started using it as my everyday carry weapon. . I have been using the Monarch 180 grain flat nose FMJ that academy sells for practice (I have put about 500 rounds thru without a hicup) and then for personal protection the Winchester PDX1 165 grain JHP. These seem to shoot the best for me, but I would try out a few different rounds and choose the ones that you like works the best for you. There are many different makes and sizes out for the 40, and every round shoots different. Hope that this helps.

It will shoot anything you like. Mine liked anything in the 180 class but shot everything I ran through it, including many different reloads. I liked 180 Gold Dots for carry.

Hey Puma, it is .40 Glocks that have been plagued with the "kBoom" phenomenon (due to the lack of a fully supported chamber.). A former coworker of mine experienced this with his Glock. Fortunately, all that happened in his case was that the magazine got blown out of the handle. I think I'll stick with my Siggy!!

I have a sig 9 and I in no way believe it to be a unsafe gun... the only way it can be is if you are not properly handling it.. and that goes without saying for any gun ... no matter what the brand....

A year or so ago I read about this on the forum. It seems that Sigma was so much like Glock that Glock took them to court over patent infringement or some such. S&W had to buy their way out of it. Oh, they had to change something or two but the gun is mostly a Glock in cheaper clothing. The Glock doesn't resound with me but I do like the Sigma.

ya, they had to add a lille spring to increase the trigger pull. I feel the Sigma is a much better gun anyway. My sigma has 18,000 rounds thru it now and not one FTF. Lets get a Glock 22and a SW40EV and try to fire 5,000 rounds of 180 gr. +p cast reloads thru'em and see which one explodes first. My money says the Glock explodes first. They have a rifling issue.

I've noticed that Glock pistols have a black colored barrel. Are they just regular carbon steel? I've never seen black stainless steel before.

Yes they are. The also don't have raised rifling so firing cast bullets out of them would leave alot of lead deposits and after a few hundred rounds would build to a point the bullet would no longer be able to pass through the barrel and the gund would explode as if there was another round lodged in side. Sigmas have that raised rifling so it does not happen. You can feed a Sigma anything and it will fire regardless.

I am on the fence about which one to go with (both Sigma) a 9mm or .40? My issue with the 40 is that I compared the barrel, it is the same barrel as the 9mm, just bored out. Am I being paranoid as it is thick enough or could there be an issue later in the .40?

Also I tried the magazine out of a glock and it won't fit a Sigma, so that is different as well.

The Mag is unique to S&W. The bore difference between a 9mm and a .40 is what you are concerned with? Really???
you should not concern yourself with that at all. I have a .45 with a barrel on it, thinner than a dime and there has not been a problem with it in 10 years.
If you are are considering a Glock just remember to not shoot anything out of it but brand new high quality ammo. this means no reloads, no cast bullets, no +p or +p+ (these are great for glocks, they make the barrel warp or explode).
Also remember after 1 year, if the slide turns to mush you are stuck with buying a new one, Glock will not cover it. They only have a 1 year warrenty. Remember S&W is lifetime.

Besides if you get a glock we will all hate you. LMFAO!!!!

I have a Glock 23, a Sigma 9mm, Sigma 40 the only thing I dislike about the Sigmas are the trigger pull. If I could get the trigger pull to 5.5 lbs. I'd be perfectly happy.:) Not smart enough to do the trigger fix. LOL :o

At the prices they are selling for you can afford both! ($299 or less)

Instead of looking at the .40 S&W barrel as a 9mm barrel that has been bored out, perhaps the 9mm barrel is a .40S&W that is not bored out as large... since both guns were developed at that same time, this is a more realistic explanation.

Ok, Ok. haha! I bought a .40 Sigma today. S&W sure has come a long way. I've bought 2 S&W's in the last month, with the other being the Bodyguard.
