So, I walk into my favorite pawn & gun shop to pick up a Henry survival .22 I won on auction last week, 'cause everybody needs a truck gun, and I figure that someday I may buy a pickup so I better have a gun for it. (OK, it may be flawed logic, but it's all I have.) I'm filling out the 4473 and minding my own business, when a model 28 drops down on the counter right in front of me.
"You know a little about those old wheel guns dont'cha?" The dealer says "wheel guns" with a face like it gives him a pain where the sun don't shine:confused:
"A little, maybe." I've spotted the lazy ampersand, and I feel some color go to my face.
"Am I priced too high on this one?" he asks.
"Of course." I answer without bothering to look at the tag.
I open it up hoping it might be the ever-elusive -1, DANG! but it is a 4-screw 28 no dash with newer magnas on it. It was a little sticky when I opened it so I look at the cylinder catch....nope, it's flush with the recoil shield. Then I check the ejector rod...yep right-hand threads and a little loose. I point out this out to the proprietor, so he sez,
"Wes, you still got those Vise-Grips behind the counter?"
When my jaw dropped and I stepped back, he knew he had me:eek:
I may not have stolen it, but I don't think I'll get hurt if I ever decide to turn loose of it. Besides, it fits nicely between my pre-28 and my 28-2.
I present to you S 1832XX. Smooth action, good timing, not a lot of rounds down the tube, and plenty of "character". $400 OTD and a hundred less than it was priced.

He shoots he scores. Congrats, $400 OTD can't go wrong on that one.

I'd say you did pretty well. That one is good for several generations of shooters.

Good story for a really nice gun.

Its always nice to make someone feel smart and end up taking them for a ride instead :D

Great score on the N-Frame my friend.
Don't ya' just love those little unexpected
joys of life?

The grips seem to match the gun, so I had assumed it was around a 1968 gun since there are no diamonds. Is this an earlier gun? Odd that someone would have switched the grips.

... I may not have stolen it ... $400 OTD ...
I'm inclined to think there was an element of larceny involved. :D

I wouldn't play poker with you.

You have to admit, however, that most of us buy a gun here and there, perhaps one or two a month at the MOST. Gun dealers buy and sell them every day. I usually feel like a hayseed walking up to a poker table occupied by a riverboat gambler.

I was talking to a fellow who had a passion for fine double rifles. He said he went to see a dealer who asked him, "Do you want to write me the check now, or would you like to see the rifle first?"

That's funny, right there.

I was thinking '58 or '59 but I don't have the SCSW memorized (yet). The other posts pretty much confirm this. Definitely later grips, but judging by the holster wear, I'm betting the original diamonds got beat up and these are replacements.
