OGCA - They're worse at a gun show than on the highway

The Text Message Idiot never touched his brakes as he hit her at Full Steam

I witnessed one of these accidents that happened just so. In fact, he hit the car in front of me head on; just lucky the other car got to the previous intersection before me and had the right of way at the stop sign and pulled out ahead of me or it would have been me.

It was on a residential back street and when I saw him come over the rise he was already in the wrong lane . . . the lady in the MERCEDES saw him coming and actually stopped as far over in her lane as she could get (with me stopping behind her) and he traveled almost 30 yards after she stopped before he hit her, never once touching the brakes. Totaled the Mercedes SUV and broke her leg. 16 years old in a brand new Grand Cherokee and TEXTING.

You can have it . . . I don't need it.

HammerDown, I wanted to click the "Like" button on your post, but I sure do not like what happened to your daughter, so it seems more appropriate to just say I agree with you and have a good thought that she completely recovers.

I now have a rule for myself that if my vehicle is moving, my cell phone is off. If I absolutely must make a call, I safely bring the vehicle to a stop first.

I have noticed that several posts extol the benefits of texting, as if some of us are so dense that we can't imagine that there must be at least some beneficial uses for texting. Please guys, that's a little insulting. We get it. Personally, however, I would bet that 99.9% of all texts are along the lines of what cute boy has the hots what cute girl, or the like. But if you text, you don't need to justify it to me. Just don't act like anybody who doesn't want to bother with texting must be an old dinosaur. And please text in a manner that is not dangerous or obstructive to others.

As for texting to get reference material, prices, etc, at a gun show table:
Once there was a thread by a guy who was upset that gun show dealer sold a gun "out from under him" while he was standing at the dealer's table, looking up information about the gun in the SCSW and consulting a friend he had with him. Most people here thought the gun show dealer acted appropriately, since from the dealer's point of view, this "buyer" was standing there blocking the table while reading a book and talking. Maybe texting / Kindle-ing / etc is "more discrete" but is it any less obstructive? DON'T BLOCK THE TABLE UNTIL YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT BUYING!

Very well said. As a matter of fact, I mentioned early on in this thread that texts have a justifiable use for business apps. but I guess some of the posts that followed ignored or didn't read the comment. They must think we're idiots not to know that. I sat in front of a computer for the 2nd half of my career at the PA. Dept. of Revenue, enforcement div. You can't have a job like that and not learn something about computers even if you don't work for the I.T. Bureau. I think it's pretty obvious that most texting by kids are nothing but mundane messages.

Know what's pathetic? It took the freeloading state lawmakers 3 years of debate to pass a no texting while driving law here in PA. These morons still can't agree on a no cell calling while driving law, can you believe that? They sure didn't neglect to pass laws that affected their pensions and per diem costs.

Hammerdown, I am very sorry your daughter went through such a bad experience! I was also rear ended at a traffic light many years ago in N.J. I was driving a small MGB convertable. I was very lucky I was not seriously injured. God has always been better to me than I deserve. This was before personal computers or cells or texting. One second I'm hearing brakes screech and seeing a car approaching fast in my rear view mirror, the next second, I'm staring at the sky with my seat collapsed backwards. It was scary to say the least.

Hello Jack
I certainly appreciate your Kind thought's and word's. By Luck my Daughter is not dainty, she is 6'-2" like her dad. That said helped her in this Horrific crash. her seat belt is what Caused most of her injuries. The Crash was so Violent that it bruised her Kidney's and she was Black & Blue all the way around her waist and across her chest where the Belt clamped down with great force. I can't tell you what was going through my mind when that call that all of us Father's Dread came in. Nicky was Frantic as she told me that she had been hit from the rear and then she said dad, I need you Now. I Jumped in my Dodge Ram and Laid it on the wood. I have many years experience behind the wheel of a circle Track car so my driving was at Mach Speed but not unsafe considering the Bad News I had just got. I approached every red light with caution with my Flasher's & Light on laying on the horn as I threaded the Needle getting to our Daughter as fast as I could. I also drove Roll back and Wrecker's most of my life so working accident scene's was not new to me, but this time it was My won I was working. I was the first one there with my wife. I had her comfort our Daughter as I blocked the road and set flares. I then checked on the Poor old Guy that was turning left. he had a busted left leg and was Bleeding from hitting the windshield. I ripped up my T-shirt Sleeve and applied a pressure Bandage to his Facial cuts then returned to our Daughter.

My son in law came in next he Parked his care down the road from the scene and walked up to Join us. I then could hear the Fire department Pumper coming and the siren of the Tennessee Highway Patrol off in the distance. My wife sat with our Daughter as I and my son in law tried to figure out Just what had happened. The Text Messaging Punk first told me that his Brakes had failed... I looked down and there was not one skid Mark. I then opened the door to his ranger pick up and depressed the brake, and saw nothing wrong with the brake pedal it was rock hard and fine. I Then returned to him and said there is Debris well over 50 Feet from the accident scene and I added Now, Don't Lie to an old man that has worked more accident scenes in the past 40 Years than you will ever know, Just tell me what you were doing here, as I couldn't smell any Booze on his breath so the only thing in my mind that was unanswered here was the Possible cell phone useage? He began to *** and replied Mister I am so sorry "It was all my Fault I was text Messaging" As soon as he admitted it, I told my son in law that I needed to get away from him before I Placed the same amount of Pain in him that he had done to our Daughter, I wanted to Choke him Out right there in the accident scene for what he had done to these Two very Innocent people, so I told him to stay away from me & my family he had done enough damage all ready from his total Negligence and Disregard for other's on the road. When the Tennessee Highway Patrol car rolled up, I happened to know the Officer. I shoot with him at our Local Range, and he is All Business when in Uniform. I told him that the Punk that caused all of this Mess and Injury to our Daughter and the Old Man told me that he was Text Messaging. He nodded and told me that he would take care of it. I returned to the Crown Victoria as I heard them trying to start it to no avail. I knew Ford's have a Fuel Pump relay switch in the trunk so I raised the trunk lid and pushed the fuel pump circuit breaker back in and it started so they moved it out of the way so it could be towed in.

The ambulance crew took our daughter out on a straight board, and she was in severe pain and crying, This really enraged me as I know that she is not a whinner and almost never cries about Pain when she has been hurt in the past so I knew her injuries had to be very serious. They then took the old Man out of his car and took him to the hospital as well. The Text Messaging Punk got to Walk away, which really tore me up as he was the cause of the whole accident, he did not need to go to the hospital he was fine. The Tennessee Highway Patrol asked me if I needed our Daughter's Vehicle towed and I told him I think it is drivable, so I jumped in it fired it up and drove it Ten miles to the Kid's house and put it in their garage. My son in law had followed me back to their home so he drove me from there to the hospital where our Daughter and the old Man were taken. Upon getting there I learned that the old man had broken his left leg as I saw it at the accident scene and he was going into surgery for it. The medical Team thanked me for Bandaging up the old guy, and I told them that I had worked Hundred's of accident scene's in the past and you just have to jump in and care for the victims until the Proper medical people show up. The Tennessee Highway Patrol officer was nice enough to come to the hospital to check on Nicky & The Old Guy. I thanked him for it, and that is when he shared with me that The Text Messaging Punk would "NOT" admit to his Text Messaging, but the trooper said he would follow up as he was investigating the accident scene Further.

A Few week's Month's I returned to the accident scene with our Daughter's attorney. We were not going to hire and attorney, but the Insurance company fought us from the start not wanting to Pay top dollar for our Daughters Totaled vehicle nor would they pay for the hospital bills, so push came to shove and we energized a very aggresive attorney. When her & I arrived at the accident scene area She had me show here where all of it took place and took Pictures of the scene. We measured it off and from the time this Punk rounded the corner he had crystal clear vision for better than 600 Yards before the violent Crash happened ! I feared the worse for our Daughter's back issues as it hurt from the time of Impact. She has regained well but when we have storms coming in her back aches and throbs. I told here that was arthritis and it will only get worse as time goes on not ever getting better. At that time our Children were trying to have Baby. I was really relieved that our Daughter was not carrying our Grandchild when this happened as she had our first grand baby Addison Grace 19 Month's after this accident happened. Many Month's have passed since this accident but our Daughter continues to be very nervous driving. The attorney won hand's down and it helped our kid's in a Monetary way, but the emotional impact of it will never go away no matter what money one is paid. I have told our daughter many time's since this accident that when she is sitting still behind other car's to keep alert of other traffic approaching. I have a time or Two Myself pulled out of a stopped Traffic line, down onto the apron of the road when I saw car's coming way to fast to stop and witnessed a few rear end collisions that I would have been involved in if I stayed in the line of Traffic. People are just Idiots behind the wheel as I have witnessed some Reading Book's, The Newspaper, Shaving, Eating, Talking on Cell phones, applying Make up, Brushing their hair or Texting. My wife and I still enjoy riding our Motorcycle but I fully understand one accident on that will be lethal for both of us so we ride when traffic is slow or not existent.. Be careful and stay off the Dang Cell Phone's there In "Nothing" in the World that Important that can't wait until you are stopped or out of your car... Be careful out there.... Idiot's & Phones Prevail... Hammerdown

I don't even think I can text on my $10 tracphone

Highly unlikely, unless it is extremely old. Every tracfone I have seen in the last 10 years had text capability. On the low end models, there is no keyboard, and you have to press a key multiple times to get some letters.

pretty decent show...saw lots more older Smiths than I usually do...bought a set of RB K combats, n magnas, 2 8 3/8 tool kits, and a nice old original ad for the Humpback hammer.

i snapped a pic of the french gray 44 magnum Dick referenced

Wish you would have text me that photo, I'd been right down!

Know why kids starting texting? They can be overheard talking by their evesdropping parents and the kid might not notice the folks are within ear shot.

There must be more to it than that - I have access to the cell phone account of a 22 year old female who has no parents left. For the months of February and March respectively she shows 5,139 and 4,622 text messages.

I almost always text her instead of calling her because she is almost always too busy to immediately answer a voice call.

I get a phone from my employer and am told to use it like it was mine and please answer it at all hours we might call. Texts are blocked. I would love someone to inform me that the gun I want is at a gun show if if it is only 100 miles away. I could then tell the guy to please hold it so I could look at if if he would send pics. It sounds like a win situation to me without telling everyone else your business. I don't see that checking internet sites for prices is any different than carring around a copy of Fladerman's gun values.

I do my internet homework on pricing of guns I want at home every week. I don't have to check anything about pricing when I attend a gun show. I already know the value of all the models I have an interest in.

A 22 year old is hardly a young teenager or pre teen.
I still maintain most texts by kids are mindless drivel or used to keep the parents out of the loop.

I started texting with my kids ten years ago as it was a good way to keep tabs on them.I use it far more than calling now. It's fast,to the point and private.

You must be under 40 years old, as am I. To be honest I'm the only 24 year old I know who doesn't own a Cell Phone.

I bailed out on technology when Facebook and Google became two of the most profitable companies in the USA.

Sure, texting/smart phones have their uses... but they also have their faults.

Cell/Smart Phone free since 2006.
ok guys i didnt mean to come off like a troll, i reread my post and it was badly written, i apoligize for my rude behavior and will check myself in the future.
snake shift,
i am 43 years old .why did f.b. and google becoming successful distress you?when you say you "bailed on technology" you obviously dont mean your computer...what search engine do you use since you wont use google?
what are the faults of texting?
so you were 18 years old when you stopped carrying a cell? good on you! my 18 year old son would have fits if he lost his phone. so would i, as much of my business(construction) and personal communication is done with a cell.
what line of work are you in?

The fault of texting isn' the texting itsself, its where you do it. No one would care if the texter went to the bathroom or to the lunch area, got out of doorways and crowded aisles, or even just kept on moving. No one cares how you get carpel tunnel as long as you're not in the way of everyone else. But we know the self centered who text insist on doing it while being in the way. I guess so all the rest of us can see how cool they really are.

Years ago many gun show go-ers developed the art of jostling folks who just stand in the way, on purpose. Its not really bumping into them, but sometimes there is no other way to get around them. The worst offenders were wives of guys who wanted to look. They weren't interested enough to get out of the way and stand next to him and look too. They wanted him to get moving because they were bored. Often with kids. And sometimes with strollers, taking up the entire aisle. Those with particularly large bottoms really choked the flow of traffic. And they felt no remorse, feeling the problem was their hubby who paid $10 to get into the show and then refused to keep moving, instead actually looking at something. My guess is they also had a fear the guy might actually purchase something and there goes the next 5 pairs of shoes.

One of the past times of table holders is watching the crowd. Sure, we talk with each other, and also with the customers who stop to talk. But often you have from a minute to a half hour of dead time (then you get swamped for the next hour). Sad as it may seem, we only rarely get a good table location. We're out with the unwashed masses where the promoter feels good about squishing the tables together and leaving very small aisles to pass in. To him its money. But then the wife comes along an simply must stand directly behind him, causing unbelievable traffic snarls. Once in a while you hear a husband who's had enough of it tell his wifey to go stand by the door if she can't stay out of the way.

So now we have this new pestilence upon the land, texters. It was probably predictable that they'd exhibit the same skills in a crowded room they learned out on the interstates. The most important thing is ignoring all outside influences and pound the keys. No one else has any importance, and its their right to be in the way, unmoving. I see a clash coming in the future.

OGCA won't even allow folks to rest at the end of the aisles, the only place they leave adequate room to pass someone. At many of the shows they put someone in charge of the PA system who hates loitering. They actually demand no one stand along the front wall. I would guess they're afraid of hookers or muggers getting into the building. It results in them clogging the aisles where others want to move and see things.

In many restaurants a growing number of people want jammers so those super important folks can't talk at full volume during meals. Of course the talk is just chit-chat. But few of those have any idea they're broadcasting their little discussion to everyone for 20 or so feet in any direction. One time in a restaurant a girl was having a pretty personal talk with a girlfriend and said something pretty embarrassing. About half the place broke up laughing. When she realized we were laughing at her she got really mad. At least the texters are quiet in their rudeness.

At a huge show the size of OGCA, you get bumped maybe 20 to 30 times a day. I assume its not intentional, it just happens. On occasion you find a person who has less crowd walking skills than is normal. Those folks get bumped constantly and some get a little upset. Except they're the ones who move right in the way of a flowing stream of people. If the stream is flowing and you want to stop, step out of it! When you want back in, look first. If you're texting and take a step in any direction, expect to get bumped. If you're motionless, blocking some poor guys table, sooner or later a bona fide customer will want to look at something right in front of you. If you're not all consumed with the screen and looking, it might be different. But the texters are all just taking up space. Oh how I wish I had a portable jammer. One that would allow me to kill the signals of the idiot in front of me. Walking and on the road.

Ha-ha! Very eloquently and I might add, sardonically put, Dick :)

My real pet peeve are the self absorbed joggers, not the texters, though. They come up behind you on the sidewalk with enough traffic noise that it makes it impossible to hear their footfalls and don't have the courtesy to warn you. I took one to the ground a few years back he scared me so bad. I was walking down the road at night to check my boat and suddenly I hear heavy footfalls and panting, and almost feel this guy's breath on my neck. He didn't give me a wide berth and just about brushed me. I thought somebody was going to mug me. I grabbed and pivoted him on my left hip and pushed him down and cut his legs out from under him and he hit the pavement. Nothing but scratches. I was mad, he was mad, but I told him you need to realize that walkers on high traffic streets can't hear you coming up behind them, and that the sidewalks are not for their exclusive use, they must be shared with all pedestrians. God forbid it would take a few seconds off their jogging time to let a person know they are there. * This was awhile back, so it took some time to remember. I actually grabbed him by his "hoodie" and pushed my left hip out and his momentum carried him to the ground. I'm no martial artist and I'm somewhat clumsy, it just happened to work out. I felt bad but I was pumped and still scared and angry with him.
Just last week Gunny (my German Shepherd and avatar) and I were walking down the sidewalk of the road and state route bordering the river across from Harrisburg. When we entered the road from a side street I looked up and down the sidewalk both ways to see if there was anybody on the sidewalks. None. A minute later I just happened to glance back and there's a 30ish jogger about 30 yds. behind me. I got Gunny out of his path and gave a command to "wait". The guy goes by and nods thanks. I said back to him you need to let people know you are sneaking up on them, he shrugs and says "I have a dog, too"! I said it has nothing to do with the dog (even though he's very protective and may have attacked him being surprised that way) it's just common courtesy and you have to share the sidewalks.
When I used to bike and run a lot, I always let the pedestrians know I was coming up on them from behind. It seemed like common sense and common courtesy to do so.

I text at gun shows all the time. Most of my buddies are to lazy to go with me so they just tell me "hey if you see something you think I like let me know" I know they'll pay me back so I dont care but here's the problem with talking on the phone at the shows.
1) Sometimes the signal is poor and while a text will go through a conversation is is garbled.
2) A lot of dealers think you're doing a straw purchase because you're telling a friend "Hey this guy has your mags". Even though mags or ammo are not considered straw purchases. Sometimes Ill ask "My friend is looking for this do you mind if I call him to let him know?"

3) Its easier to write "9mm $5/box y/n" then to wait for the phone to ring and start a 5 min conversation beginning with Hi Im at....

There's your mistake ! Common sense is no longer common and neither is common courtesy. Just what were you thinking ? . . . :p
