How many of you carry a reload for your J Frames?

Hey everyone, I have a s&w 638 airweight j frame. In the capacity department it's lacking firepower, so I was looking at my options for a quicker reload if ever needed. I found speed strips to be the most welcomed by everyone and that speed loaders are sometimes tricky and that can be a real hazard in a self defense situation . I really like the idea of the safariland comp 1 speedloader, but I wonder if it will have clearance issues with my Pachmayr Compac grips. Does anyone know if the Pachmayr grips interfere with these speedloaders? I know it's good to be prepared, but how many of you even carry a reload for your j frames? I have been primarily carrying mine for sometime now and haven't thought about carrying a reload until recently. Feel free to chime with any advice, we learn something new everyday. Thanks

I carry 3-4 speed strips with my Bodyguard wheelgun, spare mag with my Shield. Better to have it and not need it. That said, I'm not a big advocate of reloading. IMHO if you have to reload, it's no longer SD, it's a fire fight. If that's the case, you're in deep ****, I don't care what you're packing or how much ammo you've got.

On duty, I carry two speedstrips with 5 rounds each in a double dump pouch on the back of my duty belt next to my handcuff pouch. Off duty, I usually just stick them in my right rear jeans pocket.

I carry Two Snubs at all times. You can't beat a New York Reload. I also carry reloads for both weather its Two 357s or One 357 and One 38.

I usually carry 2 strips (4 rounds each). My primary reload is in a belt pouch on my left side and the second reload is in my right front pocket.

Once in a while I'll carry one or two Comp I speedloaders on my left side, but I still keep a strip in my right pocket (I like having a reload accessible to either hand in the unlikely event a one-handed reload is necessary). I use Split-Six pouches for the speedloaders.

I have Spegel boot grips on my 642 and speedloader clearance is not an issue.

Another thing I think about is when people talk about firepower with a pistol. It doesn't matter how many times a pistol shoots or how many reloads you have, you still don't have firepower. All you have is a pistol that shoots a bunch of times. A bunch of machine guns or artilley guns is firepower. Larry

Everyone here is on the same page about reloads, and it does make more sense to have some on hand if needed. I watched a few videos on the speed strips and they are pretty neat. I ordered some bianchi 7 shot strips. All I have left to do now is practice. Can't wait for them to get here.

When I carry a j frame, I carry two of them and a reload for each on speed strips.

I'm of the belief that 5 rounds just ain't enough. There's a 50-50 chance you will or won't need more than five rounds. I don't take those kind of chances.

Recent FBI statistics show more and more rounds are being expended by bad guys. And there are often more than one bad guy. And I like the option of handing a gun off to a friend if I have to.

A little more weight doesn't bother me. I could stand to lose 20 pounds anyway!:rolleyes:

Speed strips are an excellent alternate to speed loaders primarily because they sit flat in a pocket, belt, etc. ... BUT they require some serious practice to get comfortable with.

I usually have 10-15 rounds on me; what's in the J, and one or two strips. If I'm ever in a situation that requires more than that, I'm way out of my league and best find me a long gun ... quickly.
