Your revolver dates to 1966-67.
As for its being a fake Model 28, no chance. 28s are very plentiful.
As for the nickel finish being original, chance of this essentially zero.
Only documented factory nickled ones were 25 to the FHP in 1959. Serials in the S189000-S192000 range.
Only way to prove otherwise is to obtain a $50 factory letter.
IMHO, enjoy your revolver and spend the $50 on ammo.

I agree with you completely. The Hogues may look better but the Pachmayrs work better for me. I also think the broad target trigger on the M29 works against me because that blighter bites!!! Small hands do me no favours. The original grips do look the business too.

Looks like 1966 for sure. I have one, S285xxx, that's documented as having been made in January of 1967.

here is mine i got yesterday. i think it is a 1954 it has the wrong grips, but they will be replaced by the correct ones when i find them. i have a range at home and i shot it yesterday 15 times with some old cast lead i had loaded. it made one one big hole, it will shoot.

Came to forum looking for info on this piece that was passed from grandfather to father to myself. The amount of info here is amazing, thank you guys. My father has passed away and left me this 28-2, but never really told me much about it. From what I am reading it appears to be a 1973 model, correct me if I am wrong. Curious as to the value, appears to be a spectrum of pricing but thought I would throw it out there for opinions(not that I am selling but want to know what I have). Anything you guys can tell me about this would be much appreciated. Serial # N189XXX

This would be a very late S prefixed 28-2 just before they switched over to the N prefix. I have one that is numbered S332676 and it shipped in June 1969.

I'm sure you will cherish that special gun from your father. When you get a moment please post some pics as I would be very curious to see how it looks and how the finish appears.

28-3... Wait. What?

So one of the guys in the new Sporting Arms Club at my University has a Model 28-3 in very good condition that I am trying to get from him. At our next shoot I'll try and snap some pictures of it and get the serial from it. Oh and it is a 6"

By coincidence just tonight I was looking at my SCSW & noticed that there was a 28-3. It had never occurred to me that there was such a thing but since they made them up to '86 it's only reasonable. I'm still quite a S&W n00b but I was kind of surprised that I had never even heard of one before, nor ever heard them being discussed. I've certainly never seen one in the wild and I spend a LOT of time at the used/consignment cases.

Are these things uber rare? Desirable?

I'll be keeping an eye on this to see what the experts have to say.

Only the S&W historian, Roy Jinks, could date your gun precisely. The serial number indicates the late 1960s.

I'd say 28-3 are pretty uncommon. I have seen more 28-2s than anything else. A non-pinned and recessed Model 28 is a strange bird indeed.

I've seen a couple around, but not too often. One of the reasons they are unusual is because they were built primarily for law enforcement, and the -3 came out right in the throes of the wondernine revolution. They were cancelled not too long after the change as I recall.

I have a 27-2 with pinned barrel and non-recessed cylinder. That's what S&W always does during engineering changes.
