Hello gang!

Finally picked up my 4006 today from Ca gun-jail (10 day wait). I acquired this from a forum member and I have to say that this gun shot from being a "cool" gun to being my absolute favorite pistol in my collection hands down. Thanks to another forum member I now have 7 magazines for it too which means I have plenty of shooting to get caught up on with it :)

I've done a lot of research over the past 10 days anxiously waiting and other than weight, don't think I've read a single bad things about this. It had some grime or surface rust under the grips (police trade in) but the bore and the guts are immaculate. I also swapped in a bobbed hammer in place of the spurred hammer which I really like. ...the rust came off with a brass brush and some Slip2000 btw.

Are there any "dont's" with this gun? I kind of want to purchase a second 4006 just as a spare since they don't make them anymore, but they don't come up very often it seems. I wish Smith still made these.

Now I just have to get my Model 66 out of jail...

**this post serves no relevant purpose other than to vent and express my excitement for this stainless, fire breathing gem!**

Congrats on liberating that bad boy from Cali gun jail. I lived in San Diego for 28 years, so I am familiar. If you are intent on getting another, look for a Tactical model or a CHP model. I have the California State Parks model. It is the third one I have owned, but this one is a keeper. I like the bear on the slide.

Thanks Sniper. I'm going to keep an eye on the forums, but would really like to find one locally. Each time I buy online and transfer to my FFL I have to wait 30 days before I can buy another handgun unless it's PPT. Then I don't have to wait. A CHP or State Parks 4006 would be awesome. Maybe I'll get lucky and find one with adjustable sights because this one has Novaks.. then I'd have one of each.

Congrats on your 4006... they are like salted peanuts though, once you get started it's really difficult to stop... come to think of it, that's just plain true for 3rd gens... period.

My first was a 4006 CSP, and the walking bear is way cool to have.

My other favorite 4006 is a really unique Performance Center version that did not go over very well, so only 1 dozen were made.

Are there any do's and don'ts?? Not that I can think of... the only really weak link in them (and all 3rd gen's) is the trigger free play spring, I like to keep a few of them on hand with the rivets to hoard.

Otherwise... enjoy the heck out of it.

Sniper47: Also have one of the ca parks- it is really nice. FCOD- where do you live with a 10 day wait and one gun per 30 days?? Mi is working on getting rid of the useless registration- time and money that could be used for real police work instead of governmental power., Enjoy, Be Safe,

Is that spring the one that is in front of the trigger? The one that looks like it's housed under the dust cover? If so I think I'll order a few extras from Numrich. Is "Trigger free play spring" the actual name of it?

The state is being sued by Cal-guns foundation, but the hearing has been put on hold. They're looking to get rid of the 10 day wait... at least for those of us who already own firearms because it's a little redundant and it's delaying firearm's owners rights. As MLK said, "A right delayed is a right denied"

I imagine it'll go to 9th circuit and probably SCOTUS. CA sucks!

No, the one under the dust cover is the recoil spring. the trigger free-play spring can be seen if you take the slide off. It's a little flat metal copper colored thing.

You should have added that its attached to the drawbar with a rivet right behind the trigger hooks.

I'm convinced that people who think that .40 is too snappy have never shot a 4006. Those CSP bears are cool:cool:

... traded a Glock 9mm for my 4006 and never looked back... out of my entire collection, still the one I shoot the best and have the most fun doing it... indestructible and wonderful!

S&W Part# 234230000 Trigger Play Spring & 068770000 Trigger Play Spring Rivet

Brownell's usually has it for less than Numrich... but try S&W first.

Here's a pic showing the relationship of the spring with the trigger and drawbar. It puts pressure against the trigger to keep the pawls (fingers) firmly in place with the drawbar (red arrow).

When the spring gets weak or out of adjustment and allows some free play to develop, there will be an audible click and a funky feeling in the trigger pull. The clicking and play spring has been discussed many times in various threads, such as this one: 4566 Clicking Issue

Thanks for the info on the spring. It's been a few days since I looked at this thread. Do these springs go out often? I'm assuming I'd have to buy a special tool to rivet it back in if/when it goes out?

I've had to adjust the ones in my pistols a couple of times. Usually I just carefully bend the spring and it's good to go for another few months.
