Why S&W?

My 15R was the first one I bought. I wanted to shoot the 5.45 round because of cost. I have since added a DD and a Ruger. DD is considered a top tier company, but I really don't see the difference between the 3. Pleased with all of them.

I was looking at a few different brands until I finally bought my S&W M&P15 Optics Ready a few weeks ago. This is my first AR. I've shot several other brands before. Have some family friends that own S&W's, my dad has a Rock River Arms, shot bushmasters, and was considering a DPMS.

I usually do a month of research before I buy. I browse several forums and read up personal and professional reviews. When it came time to buying one, it was mainly between the S&W that I just bought or the RRA. I wanted quality, value, reliability, and stay within $1,000 (I know, crazy thinking during the current state of the industry).

Anyway, a few weeks ago I started calling LGS's and started losing hope that I would find a Smith or RRA, let alone any AR-15. Last place I called put me on a waiting list and then called me a few hours later and told me they had the exact Smith I wanted brand new in the storage area. Went there the next morning and only got stung $950. Got the AR-15 I wanted and paid below my max; it was a perfect situation.

So I chose Smith & Wesson because of availability. But mostly because of my personal experience with the weapon, the thoughts from the people on this forum and the professional reviewers. Plus Smith's warranty is the icing on the cake.

Hope this helps. Nothing wrong with cross shopping and going on several sights that are biased to one brand. You are bound to find objective thoughts.

Well I was actually wanting to buy a Sig but this MP15 came up and the more I researched it the more I liked it. My son has 2 Ar's and is fairly knowledgeable about them. As stated some have more bells and whistles but I have a budget and I want a rifle that is accurate. This ones it. I feel like I got more rifle for money and it's a perfect fit. I was also convinced I wanted a chrome lined barrel until I researched the Melonite and was informed about chrome lined barrels having a slight decrease in accuracy. Melonite doesn't effect it.
I also own a Sig P220. I WILL HEAD FOR COVER!!!

By the way, I don't own any S&W hand guns. I have a HK P30 9mm and looking to buy a Springfield XDs this year hopefully. Love my P30, but I need something that is easier for conceal carry. Smith pistols just don't do it for me. But I do salivate at the M&P 340CT. Just not in the cards for my budget any time soon. Still have student loans I'm paying off. Plus between the M&P15OR I just bought and its new furniture, I took a serious deposit out of my funds for a 29" carbon MTN bike frame

I bought it for all the above positive reasons as stated. I started out with the M&P handguns and loved them. THIS forum and all the positive people helped me deside on the best bang for the $$$. I have a Sport and the "T". And today I ordered the new M&P X piston driven model from my LGS (just got back from a big show out East), that's coming out. "Should" have it by Summer.

To tell you the absolute truth, I bought a S&W M&P 15-Sport because of price point and brand name. The absolute gem of the Sport is the Thompson Center 1:8 5R, progressive gain twist, Melonite treated, barrel. It's so darn good, that S&W ported it over to other rifles in the M&P 15 family. Second, I like the integrated trigger guard on the lower.

Of all the AR/M-4 choices out there why did you choose a S&W? I shot my fair share of M-16A1 & A2's in the military. We used Colt & H&R.

The barrel sold me. Melonite, 5r rifling and 1-8 twist. A very good combination. Price did not hurt either; it was on the low end of the cost scale. Not the least expensive, but not far from it!!!! The S&W name did not hurt in my choice, either. I have a couple other Smith's, and I owe my life to one of them. So.... I AM a bit partial to the moniker.;)

You guys used a Harris/ Rossi shotgun when in the military??!!! A lot of insurgent doves around your base, or were they special forces rabbits you had to deal with????:D (H&K...... you meant HK)

No, he meant H&R, Harrington and Richardson. He provided a pic few posts up. But when I hear H&R, I think old, break top revolvers and shotguns.

Why Smith?

Quality and price sells. I've owned at least 4 Smith AR's in the last 3 years, and not a single hiccup.

Combine this with any type rebate they at times offer and you have a genuine "bargain in a black rifle."

I have had a very early Colt (sold) and currently have my S&W M&P MOE (older version with 1/9 twist and chrome lined bbl) and all I can say is I love my M&P. the Colt was a 'slick side' no FA or deflector and in a moment of greed, I sold it years ago. When I got back into AR shooting again, I did as much research as I could and S&W was very high on every bodies list. I looked at a Colt and a Smith side by side. For the money and life time service, I went with the S&W. I have since shot many 1000's of rounds, mostly Russian steel case, and it has been 100%. Quality, reliability, service and durability coupled with a life time service is the reason I bought one over other 'name' brands. Oh, I also have a Glock 22.

Wasnt the old M79 an H&R? It sure felt like it! LOL
Sorry OP I couldnt resist, I tried, I really did!

The other reason I buy S&W products now is because the idiots who compromised with the Clinton administration are gone. S&W's had a great turn around since. New products, new attitude. Same with Strum & Ruger. Bill Ruger dictated to the consumer what they should want. Now that he's dead & gone, Ruger is listening to what the consumer wants.

Because S&W implemented construction methods beyond the military TDP for a select fire rifle that makes for a better civilian consumer semi-auto rifle.

Really? How so? Please list (in detail) the updgrades over the TDP.

S&W AR's (especially the SPORT) offer a fantastic value (assuming some things do not matter to you).

Their Magpul edition rifles are very nice and a good value for what you get.

S&W continues to improve their AR line up and is getting better all the time I think.

With that said, if you have a BCM/DD/Colt AR and the SW AR is the SAME PRICE, I don't know that I would choose it over one of these brands. YMMV

Currently, S&W AR's are commanding a high premium so I would wait a few months till things calm down a little before trying to buy one.

Good luck!

Grant, not to start an argument, but I would consider the Melonite and 5R rifling to be major upgrades over the TDP.
I have posted engineering studies that show Melonite to far surpass Hard Chrome or Chrome in general in every way except cost of production.
5R rifling is now being offered in top tier bolt action rifles from other manufacturers, not just T/C. Remington is the first one that comes to mind.
I am now doing some trigger polishing jobs for friends on S&W, Bushmaster, DPMS and Colt Rifles. Out of those manufacturers S&W seems to take a little more pride and precision in their FCG's than the others with better and more complete machining.
As I said earlier I really do not want to get into an argument but these items appear to exceed the TDP to me. :D

Buy which ever one makes you happy, it is your money and your weapon. I find it kind of foolish to come to a forum such as this and ask which one is better, of course the members here will say the S&W, after all it is what we own and why we are here instead of being in a Colt forum.

Where in my OP post did you see me compare the S&W to a Colt?
