Where do you find the model number and find out if you have a 686- ?. I think that I have a 686-2, it`s on the frame under the cylinder, is that the right place, right below the serial number. Thanks, Jeff Also new to this forum

Yes, you are correct. You have a 686-2.
If you post your S/N like this - ABC 00xx we can help you date your gun.

Welcome to the forum from North Dakota. Plenty of experts ( not including me) here that can help you with any question or problem.

I'm a fellow 686 owner. You will find alot of people on here really like the no dash to -4 models. We also love pictures by the way. ;)

Greetings - I am also a new 686 owner, having visited a show yesterday and finding EXACTLY what I was looking for. This is my first revolver, and after much reading, I knew this was the one. What a nice piece! The Ahrends grips were a bonus thrown in, and work well with my smaller hands. This 686 is an AARnnnn vintage - around 1981? I am looking to give it a really good cleaning, especially on the carbon build-up on the front of the cylinder. Anything else I need to know to take good care of this gun? Looking forward to going to the range soon and also learning lots from this forum! Thanks.

I wasn't planning on selling that 686, and I usually do clean them up more when I put them up for sale. I would use some Flitz or Simichrome on a cloth to get the carbon from the front of the cylinder. Make sure you get it all out of the chambers before you shoot it. The carbon will just come back when you shoot it though. Enjoy your new gun. I know I did.
