Hey all, I have a bad habit as some people say that I do not keep a round in the chamber.

My question is do all of you?

Lastly, is there any possible way for the pistol to accidentally discharge without pressing the trigger? Since I do not have a thumb safety or anything on my M&P 9c.

Thank you.

I always carry with a round in the chamber. The time that it would take to chamber a round could cost you your life. If you were jumped and someone is on top of you and your fighting you won't be able to rack the slide. You could just carry a hammer it would be just as effective. The answer to your second question is NO. I always carry my shield loaded and the safety off. Ready in less than a second when a threat is closeing on you fast and you have to defend your life!

Whats the point of carrying around an uloaded gun? When seconds count and the adrenaline is flowing you don't want to be messing around trying to rack the slide to load your weapon. My finger is the safety I rely on.

I served 31-years in law enforcement, including working warrants by myself without any cover. I tried several different carry methods (because of "safety") before I realized that you didn't always have the time to chamber a round. Criminals don't always act as expected and often attack without provocation or warning.

How are you going to chamber a round if you are fighting an attacker with one hand?

If you are not comfortable carrying that pistol in a ready-to-fire mode then either get comfortable with it through training and discipline or look to another type of pistol, such as a revolver.

Stay safe.

I keep a round in the chamber all the time. Only time your weapon will fire is if you or something comes in contact with the trigger. It won't go off just "sitting".

what kind of training would you reccomend?

anything i could do/practice from home or should i sign up for a safety class or two?

i live in md so i wont be ccw anytime soon but if part of the reason i got a firearm was/is personal protection in my home i'd like to have it with me.

i also have two kids under age 6 that like to wrestle. do any parents holster/unholster weapons when their kids start to climb all over them?

^^^ thats partly why i still keep mine locked up out of their reach.

but i kinda feel like i'm defeating the purpose of having one by not having it readily available...

is there any possible way

of course things "could" happen
perhaps some stray static electricity could strike the round causing it to ignite.
but given the basic understanding and proper use it would be safe- safer in my opinion- to have the round chambered and the weapon ready for use.
the revolver could have a round under the hammer and you would be facing the same situation -if you fill all the holes 6 rounds in a six shot cylinder or 5 in a 5
training and experience
do you suppose a LEO may get into an encounter where they are wrestling with someone and their weapon remains safe?

carry mode

I have trained police and citizens for 40 years in firearms. From a tactical standpoint...I teach the 2 second rule....once you have made the decision to deploy your weapon in a lethal encounter you should be able to deploy...engage the threat and fire a aimed / accurate round in two seconds.
I recommend most citizens to carry a revolver unless they have received formalized training on their particular weapon system, and are comfortable and proficient with it.
A lot of citizens who are "uncomfortable" with their pistols carry them with a empty chamber, or the decocker down ( DA/SA system) or both....making the pistol virtually impossible to deploy under duress.
GUns and kids do not mix....period....I am a grandparent with young kids in the house and I have the firearms secured where they are unaccessible.....as far as wrestling.....put the gun up & secure it.
During my professional career - I have "wrestled" several times with folks while wearing a sidearm, not to be recommended. As mentioned in previous posts, if you cannot train and be "comfortable" with your life saving tool, then perhaps you should reconsider your choice.

I agree with this and I do in fact carry a revolver. But if you must carry a pistol, be sure to carry safely.
Carry Condition Tactical Butterscotch - YouTube

Yes the ol Butterscotch method is very effective! :D

Only thing you can really practice is draw, if you carry at home. You could always put in a snap cap and do your daily things around the house and at the end of the say take it out and see if the striker hit the snap cap.

As for kids.....i dont have any and wouldnt know the correct answer but i suppose putting the gun on top of the fridge or china cabinet or any high furniture will be safe while playing with the kids and at the same time within reach. You also have to look at the area where you live. My area is very safe and i have a greater chance of a soccer mom running me over with her brand new $100k SUV than i do of having a home invasion so i dont carry at home.

Dont miss the opportunity to shot yourself in the leg when reholstering the gun with one in the chamber like never happens pretty often.odds are that'll happen before you ever need it to defend yourself.

I don't keep a round in the chamber but I don't carry. If I carried, I would.

Soooo? Carry empty chamber?

I know i waste more ammo holstering and un holstering then i do at the range. Morning ....baaam! Bathroom .....baaam! Its impossible not too!

I know there are you tube vids of this happening and 1/2 are reposts. I wonder what the odds of shooting yourself while holstering are if everyone who owned and carried a striker fired gun would post daily vids of it happening ...or not happening.
