Strange Day - A Bear, a Colander, a Saucepan, and a Bull Snake

This drought is making the animals crazy. I woke up at 3am thinking my toddler son was coming from his room to mine...have to pass through the whole house to do so. I got up to meet him. Walking through the kitchen in the pitch dark, I noticed something amiss. I glanced to the right and was surprised to see the head of a black bear INSIDE my window, trying to get into the kitchen. I ran over there, grabbed the closest item ( a metal colander [food strainer]) and proceeded to crack him on top of the head. He retreated. Call is in to Game and Fish, again..they already took a 150# and a 300# bear off of my property this week that had been breaking into area homes!

Later I was putting away the dishes that had finished drying on the counter. I picked up a saucepan and curled up underneath was a 2' bull snake! I picked her up and released her out back.

The drought here is wreaking havoc with the critters.

I don't know what's going on with the bears around here. They too are acting weird and are out in full numbers during the heat of the day. It can get up to the mid 90s so, one would think they would be finding someplace cool. We take the dogs for a walk and there is one over here and one over there ... It isn't normal. Usually they come out at dusk to see what people left lying around. (Sadly, some people still haven't figured out that a fed bear is a dead bear)

Maybe we should make colander hats and bull snake wraps for our bears to wear too!

Yesterday I had about a 140 pound black wild boar come out of the jungle next door and run past my pool cage about 5 feet away from me and I shooed him into the palmettos. Called Fish and Wildlife for their advice and their comment was "isn't anything we can do?, call a trapper". Some help, huh?

Here in the U.P. of Michigan it has been above average rain and warm the blue berries are starting to turn and the bears will be busy. Not as many bear reports in my area, a Moose or two were seen near town. This is the first year in about 6 we have anywhere near normal rain fall. Have been declared a drought area for about 5 years. A couple of the smaller lakes dried up along with some marshes. The most positive thing about the weather in the winter is it has been mild and the white tail fawn population improved some.

DB68 - You better hope that hog don't start rootin' up your yard at night. It takes a while for a hog to get use to going into traps. Your best bet is to keep the .357 real handy or better yet a rifle.
Another option is to try to catch him in a snare trap that is anchored very well and then shoot him. Good luck with your next door neighbor!

I'm not FWC, but I'll give you some advice:
The next time he runs past, angling away, look just behind his ear. See that little spot where there's no hair? Put a .22 long rifle solid right there. Skin, butcher, invite friends to barbeque.

Had a buddy that used to trap for extra money. He was crawling into a thicket one time and surprised a black bear. Bear sunk it's teeth into his thigh, picked him up off the ground, shook him a couple times, then dropped him. He spent a couple months in the hospital getting the infection out of him, the six more months getting his leg to work right again. Not so cute....
