My oldest son turns 34 next month and he was 7 or 8 when a deputy knocked (Pounded!!) on the door at 2:30 or 3:00 in the morning. He Demanded to know where the kids that were in the tent in the backyard were. I laid the magazine that was in my hand on the table behind me, it plopped open and the 1911 was laying there in plane sight, Then I started on him: What do you mean searching my property without permission or a warrant? That's how most people get shot in this neighborhood! He turned sheepish and knew he was in deep do-do. He apologized and said motorists had called about being shot at, and someone had jerked the Stop sign out at the corner. My wife giggled at the last comment and said the boys had a younger friend stay the night and they were to sleep in the tent, but the 5 year old guest was afraid of the crickets in the tent so they slept indoors. I then related that I saw 2 unknown teens walking down the road at dusk (this was in the middle of nowhere back then, still is). One of the teens looked just like a neighbor who was a delinquent in high school. He said he check there next. Just before he left I said, "Two things." he turned and looked at me and I said, "No warrant will ever be wasted at his house, and second... You couldn't pay me enough to drive back to his house this late at night, without backup, good luck." For several years the Deputy still patrolled our area, and would wave or stop to talk. On more than one occasion, he said that he hadn't been thinking about anything but locating the trouble makers, and when I put "that cannon" down, he realized that he could have been dead meat for not taking precautions. And he DID get back-up before going back that drive. No one else has knocked on my door late night uninvited. They would get a very unfriendly greeting. Ivan

Few years back my partner had a guy answer the door middle of the day with a gun pointed at my partner (I was off) the fire Dept and the Police Officer who were responding to a Medical Call at that address. The fellows mother passed away while talking to her sister on the phone. Sister called 911 not the son. The son never gave a challenge or noted the sirens, or the Big Red truck out front. Not only did he lose his mother that day he was arrested a few weeks later after the Funeral. Don't answer the door!! Issue a challenge through the closed door. Don't just level a gun till you know who is on the other side.

The fellow was held for just a few hours. The Judge just wanted to have a long talk with him.

I do agree with the idea that we all can learn from other`s experiances. I see model70hunter is or was a LEO. I am sure he must have a vast amount of experiance to draw from as I have. I spent most my life as a graveyard guard for lockheed aircraft a huge place and lived in the dark and answered various calls and checked out people, lost, tresspassers, drunks etc sometimes several times a night. Now I realise most people dont have model 70s or my experiance and generic advice might be safer for the multitudes. I will give you that. It is kind of fun to relate some of those experiances here and there, though. I aint got nothing else but memories.
How is being a graveyard shift night watchman like being a Law Enforcement Officer?

I didnt take time to watch the video but agree that most of this advice and training is made with the fact in mind that they are talking to 95% of people of all level of ages, disabilites, inexperiance etc. All leo`s, guards etc have to have confidence, some agressivness and confident demeaner or the country wold have about 100 X`s prroblems we already have. Long, long ago I made up my mind will not live in fear. I suspect most leo, military, guards and hopefully many other people come to that conclusion. I dont know how many times I have said here and elsewhere that a good "Demeaner" is your biggest friend and weapon. In all the reading I have done its amazing that that subject isnt pounded to death but the truth is you hardly if ever read of it.
Of course you cant get a good demeaner in the area of self confidence if you dont have the training, ability and strength to feel it so others can feel it off you. Bt it also go`s much farther than just that part of it. Part of it also is what you DONT DO. Comeing off demeaning, cocky etc.
I`m done.

It’s self evident that you didn’t watch the video because you spent a paragraph telling us all to do what Mr. Ayoob very specifically said not to do in the video.

I live in an apartment, no windows along the front of my home and I’m not about to stand dead nuts in front of the door and use the peephole. I don’t know who lived here before me or what kind of enemies he may have made and (as Masaad Ayoob points out in the video you couldn’t be bothered to watch) I don’t want to give the person on the other side of the door A clear picture of where I am when I ask who it is.

My basic rule is if I am not well acquainted with the person on the other side of the door and expecting them I very likely am not going to open the door.

You have to stay up late and drink lousy coffee?

I'm a Security Officer and I would never make that comparison

I would. I worked in EMS on the night shift for about half of my 35 years. All sorts of weird, uh, stuff happened on the night shift. All the Loons came out after midnight and I see no reason why security officer at a high value target client like Lockheed wouldn't see a lot of that.

For a facility like Lockheed, I'd think of their security as more of a private police department than a retired guy working as a security guard.

I have a friend who was employed as a security officer at a nuclear power plant. They had to qualify with and had M16s on site, just in case.

Where did I say I was a LEO? I did say I had a lot of experiance (35+ years) as a night watchman. 33 of those were on graveyard. Lockheed isnt a church or mall. It had high as 20,000 adults working for them at various times. Thats almost a city with no kids in the count. I had more expeiance handeling people in the middle of the night than I could count. Some of that time was in secluded desert locations where no one was suppose to be and yet I ran into them tresspassing there too. Sorry if I wasnt walker, texas ranger for you but I never claimed to be. I doubt you have had a fraction of that experiance dealing with people you had to check in the wee hours alone. I thought this thread started about simply answering your door late at night so chime in with a fraction of some experiances I have had. I lived half my life doing the very thing this thread is about. I dont need to and wont take static from a lightweight.
Smoke, my tirade isnt directed at you but N frame. After posting I seen you posted and in no way did I direct it at you.

You said you had as much experience as the LEO who posted! Just sayin!

I'd like to put in a plug for a barred and screened "security door" in front of your front door. It should have a sturdy deadbolt on it in addition to the normal knob lock. I don't mind answering the door with it as a barrier to intrusion. My pit bull mix, Joe, sometimes drowns out any conversation, because he's right by my side and he does NOT like strangers. He has an excellent memory and is OK with our friends; no problem with them, or with people we tell him are fine for talk or admittance. No gun in evidence, but one is handy within seconds if need be.

Joe is usually all that is needed to discourage any nefarious characters...:D

Personal observation. I will not hide in my house. I will freely walk the streets and roads of this great nation, no individual or group will intimidate me. And I surely will not be afraid to answer my own door regardless of the time. (Yes, I will be armed)

And to all these highly trained LEO's jumping on here, remember, your not the only ones who have ever had your butts on the line. Be civil. It's almost mandatory here.

The "security officers" at Indian Point on the Hudson River make truckloads of money, and the jobs are highly sought after. The background check is extremely rigid. To my knowledge they're the only people in NY carrying M16's besides LE.

I worked with 3 different guards that had worked for a atomic energy plant. ALL THREE DIED YOUNG WITH LEUKEMIA! One of them I was a very close friend with. After he died I heard from the widow that he was on a atomic spill or leak and that something like a half dozzen people that were there all died of leukemia or cancer young.
I would give jlrhiner 10 likes if possible. Thats exactly how I feel. I am not saying everyone should think like him and me. I dont and wont live in bagdad. I do apologise to N Frame for loseing it. Most of us dont personaly know each other. I am sure we all would treat each other better on a one on one basis in person. The thing is when we read someones imput its easy to visualise the wrong message. In probley every case we might give either not enough credit or maybe too much credit to some people we read about if you have never met them. I found that out many years ago when I was a movie studio guard. It went both ways when I met them. Just because some one wrote a book doesnt make them a God. I think it was said that mark spitzs trainer couldnt swim. Someone asked him about it and I read that he said: Those that can do. Those that cant teach! Its just that I refuse to live like they did in nazi germany or do in bagdad. Thats just me. I would tell my kids different too, like do it as the video that I finaly got around to watching. I will answer my door to anybody any time. I probley wouldnt though if I ran a orphanage.

I was testing the home sale waters 2 weeks ago with a real estate agent. Turns out she rents out a couple condo's my BIL owns, small world.
We discussed comps and the 'hood. Then she told me something a bit shocking, there were sellers in the area who left their doors unlocked, at least during the day anyway.
Imagine that, in NY in 2013.
PS: I'm not ready to leave just yet.

The odd thing is I spent my life in security work. Yet my wife is faaar more security minded than me.

It's not a question of fear.

It's as simple as this would you rather respond to the problem or avoid the problem?

If you intend to do me harm and you can't get past the door my problem is solved

Police officers, as well as EMS, have a duty to respond they have to get right in other people’s business. Private security on the other hand is all about observe and report. Security deals with the occasional loon that comes on their site, usually by calling the police. The police have to go out and find them

I seem to recall the Supreme Court ruling that LEO's had no duty to respond. So they only have to respond when the odds are in their favor. They get to use their heads.

I have the utmost respect for LEO's, but I have to say, if your job is too dangerous or performing your job makes you nervous, find something else to do. I believe you knew exactly what you were getting into when you signed up. yes, your job is sometimes stressful, and yes dangerous. But you picked it.

Attempting to belittle someone because you think your superman is a bit boorish. Let's grow a little and realize there are other people in the world besides Cops and bad guys.
