The godfather and scarface....

Godfather & Godfather II will probably be classics. Godfather is a great movie & usually makes any "best movies" list.

I like one and two, but three was fairly lackluster.
#1, He doesn't look right for the part, and doesn't look
like an older version of who he played in #1 and 2.
He looks more like an older version of Tony Montana.. :(
It's largely the hair I think.. I expect him to look slicked
back like he did in 1 and 2. And the plot and story doesn't
measure up to 1 and 2.

The Al Pacino Scarface is terrible. It did not age well and Al makes the worst Cuban ever. It's nearly impossible for me to sit through it.

Scarface gained notoriety when it was released in the 80s over glorifying the drug trade and the use of violence and language. Once notorious, it gained a cult following amongst wannabe tough guys and gangstas, giving it even more credibility. It was quotable, simple and very violent. Just what the masses wanted. Watch into today and it's just laughably bad, like so many other 80s movies.

Whoever is feeding you this trash as great movies needs to stop.

ETA: Al Pacino is one of the most overrated actors out there. His acting in Heat nearly ruins that movie as well.

In "Scarface" with Al Pacino in the lead role, everyone had to overplay their roles just to keep it from being a one-man show.

In films like the Godfather, and ...Part II, Pacino was kept in check by other actors such as James Caan, Marlon Brando, and Robert Duvall. I thought Diane Keaton was horrible, and all she came across as, was some whiny WASP.

In "Heat", he was kept in check by Robert DeNiro, especially when they were in the two scenes together. However, he tended to get over the top with the supporting cast.

scarface was cool when i was a teen, but it wasnt that good.
i agree that the godfather was as boring as anything ive seen, but you really should watch casablanca ,you wont regret it.

The godfather is so long and un eventful, easy to lose interest in it IMO. I'd hope Casablanca is the same way.

casablanca has a good story and great dialogue. itll cost you 2 hours of your life to find out if im lyin'.:)

If we're talking the Pacino "Scarface" I'll agree it's a huge stinker. However, I will disagree on the "Godfather", also liked "II", hated "III"-I was actually pleased when Sophia Copolla was killed. She's a better director than actor.

And without beating a dead horse I will say "Casablanca" is a film that truly is one of a kind and a great watch. Not only did it give birth to some of the greatest lines still uttered today but the cinematography/lighting hasn't been matched since.

I also have a weakness for some, and I mean some, of the other 70s films- "The French Connection" (one of my best friend's dad was in the Bureau of Narcotics/later DEA & worked that case) and "The Seven Ups" both captured the flavor of NYC of the time.

Film, like many endeavours, is highly personal and so what one may enjoy, others may not. Some like Glocks, others M&Ps lol.

2 hours?

Casablanca has cost me at least 50 hours of my life, as I know I've seen it AT LEAST 25 times. :p

I liked Heat. But I generally can't stand older movies. If it's black & white I usually have neither the interest or the time.

Scarface is Scarface and stands out for exactly what it is in all its cheap violent glory. You can either appreciate it for what it is or not but it is a cult classic regardless of anyone's particular opinion.

Amen! Scent of a Woman set new levels of the depths of suckiness. Vomit. Even Pacino admits he hasn't made good movie since Dog Day Afternoon. Thank goodness for DeNiro and Kilmer in Heat.

Godfather 1 and 2 are great movies.

True grit is another old movie that's damn good, I thought the new version was damn good as well.

I agree that "The Godfather" can be a little boring but one has to remember, the triology is telling a very long story that spans decades and generations. I would never refer to Pacino as "overrated" however. He's one of the best to ever come down the pipe.

How in the name of jumpin' Jehoshaphat can you think that "Casablanca" is not a great movie?

Even if it were poorly made (it wasn't) it would be significant as an allegory of its time. When it was made, which was before the USA had committed to the war, many people here were ambivalent to the war in Europe. THAT is what the film is about. Rick speaks to that ambivalence. He's an American and wishes to remain neutral but can't. Sort of like how this country was drawn into the war. Get it? If you don't I give up.

As it stands it's a beautifully made movie and stands on its own as a film even without the political baggage.

A few of many Classics, On The Waterfront, The Wild One, Julius Caesar.

Who could play Don Vito Corleone better than Marlon Brando?

When Casablanca was filmed we were deep into WW2. The studio never thought the movie would be so popular. The setting was in No. Africa which we had just invaded. Bogart was a screen idol & Bacall was just coming along. They made a great team. The music "As time goes by" became a hit also.I remember it because my folks took me to the movies one Saturday matinee about 1942 or '43.

Ingrid Bergman was the one he paired up with in Casablanca.
They had Key Largo on TCM last night.. Bacall was in that one from
1948.
