Living in the City and Skunks

Used to shoot lots of skunks out here where I live and got too populated to take the chance. Ran into a guy one time up at the Farm and Ranch Supply Store and had good discussion as he worked 30 years for animal control. Get you a plastic 55 gal barrel, cut it in half long ways, or larger if you want, fill with water. Get a small or medium animal trap and bait with usually what you want and you will get the skunk. Give him something pretty good besides junk food. When the skunk is in the trap next morning, approach the trap and throw a tarp over it and reach down and pick up the handle of the trap and gently move it back and forth and take it and drop it in the tank of water trap and all and the skunk will drown shortly. Shaking the trap and not being able to see you the skunk will not spray. Works every time.

CCI makes a .22lr in quiet. About the sound of a pellet. It is the season of fireworks. You'd be surprised at what people in their own house watching TV, DON'T hear.

Get a length of PVC pipe, 6" or 8" diameter. Take a 4' length, threaded on one end (get a pipe cap also). Glue a cap on one end and leave the threaded one open. Set it in the yard, throw some tuna inside. Skunk enters, doesn't know enough to back out and can't turn around, cannot raise tail in pipe so cannot release stink. With skunk inside, screw cap on open end.

Well…..did not work last night.

Something removed the pickles from the bowl I have tie wrapped down to the cage and strewn them about.

Two youths (small skunks) were seen in our back yard last night.

I ran out of pickles last night.

Time for that can of sardines that has been in my pantry for some time.

One of the benefits of having deer hunters in one's midst is that one does not have to harvest the urine from a local fox, but can buy it in small bottles at a hunting supply outlet, which is often remarkably close to the LGS.

NOW you tell me... :D

If all else fails, you could try antifreeze. That will probably take care of the cat problem, too.

guy next door feeds the feral cats on the hill. during the winter you can see them better in the snow going from house to house eating what food the people leave out for them. BUT, the skunks come almost everynight to eat what the cats don't finish. purchased a box trap, 2 coons, one escaped, blood all over the trap, other as walking down to release the coon, down the river, lost grip, trap rolled down the hill. he also got out. had to make a few upgrages to the trap. next a 15 lb possom. opened the door and he just sat in the trap until i stood it up. thanks for the pickle trick. wonder if they like relish?

I have seen small black tubes specifically made for catching skunks for sail at farm stores. Small in diameter so they cannot lift. Its similar to a Hav A Hart trap.

I lived around them most of my life, they are even common in the city around here. Usually choosing to den up in a rather uninhabited area and then visiting the local areas at night while hunting for food. They prefer cat foods over dog food but will eat dog food in a pinch, so if you feed your animals outside you are welcoming them to dinner. I prefer the company of skunks to mice and if you have a skunk in the area you will not have mice, they are the best mousers bar none except maybe your common weasel on the planet. As a youngster I was conned into picking up a large male by the tail by my uncle, the skunk was trapped in the chicken coop and my uncle told me to reach in there and lift him up by the tail. Uncle Norman said "If you pick him up by the tail, it kicks his shooter out of gear." Well sir I reached in their and grabbed his tail and hauled him out proud as can be, I was about nine or ten and the skunk weighed a good 20-25lbs, my arm got tired and I dropped him enough for him to grab my pant leg and OOOOHHHHH did he let me have it...I can attest to the fact that it doesn't quite blind you more than more of a total sensory overload, then old Sneaky got into it trying to protect me and the dog and I both got it. I remember sitting on the back porch eating a few meals with the dog because no matter what she tried Grandma couldn't cut that smell off me, it was a good two or three days before I was fit for human contact. Oddly...to this day the smell of skunk does not bother me, in fact I kind of like it, especially in the early spring...it usually means that winter is finally over. Someone once told me the reason you usually see so many little skunks dead on the road is because Mama kicks them out wholesale when she figures its time for them to hit the road and she wants to start thinking about taking up some light housekeeping with a new suitor.

I had a new 78 Chevrolet pickup & stopped to get rid of some Colorado cool aid & there was a dead skunk on the road. We decided to do a burnout on it. It ended up between the fuel tank & fender. Hard to get rid of that smell.:D

Well something ate the sardines but did not set the trap door.

The two youth skunks were not seen last night nor have we heard them scurrying around underneath my patio deck.

mama gone, brother(s)/sister(s) gone….where did these little ones go???

I hope they are not dead under my patio but I guess I will find out soon.

If you want to catch a skunk all you need is a burlap bag and a flashlight.

I am so clumsy…I will lose that fight and not be allowed in the house for days.

We heard them underneath the patio deck.

I set the traps again.

EDIT: CAUGHT TWO!!!!!!!!!!!! They were munching on Jalapeño Sardines and finally the trap door fell.

I hope thats all of them.
