Let's See Your J Frame Grips

The old style Uncle Mikes "combat" grips were the best IMO. The new S&W ones that look like them are too slick and don't feel as good in the hand. I'm on the lookout for more of those old style.

Right. Uncle Mike made two style of grips for the round butt J-frame. The Boot Grip, a small concealment grip shown with my M638-2 above, and the Combats which were more of a a full size "banana". Both were great grips. Anytime I see them for sale cheap, I buy them.

Here are a few grip choices.

Something odd..........an Ergo grip. I have a 642 I carry a lot and decided to give this a try, it's different but shoots well, and it doesn't feel as bulky as it appears, even using appendix carry. Ugly, but functional.

I have a pair of 60-4's, each with different grips. The left gun wears a Hogue, which is okay, but I prefer the now-discontinued Sile version on the right.

I'm pretty fond of these. I just picked up another 60 with the same style.

Harrish - do you think the Altamont Polymer and Rosewood cushion your hand as well as the stock rubber grips?

I'm loving my new 638 and would like to dress it up a little, but I read one review of the all wood grips that your hand hurts while shooting. I have an Apex trigger kit in mine, so it's a joy to shoot as is. But like I said, I'd like to gussy her up a bit.

I absolutely love the polymer/rosewood grip. It is not my favorite looking grip (though my wife loves how it looks), but it offers the absolute best grip of any of the pinky-free grips I have ever held. It is contoured to fit your hand perfectly. The rosewood gives it a perfect swell to fill your hand. I shoot more accurately with that grip than ANY of my grips, even the grips that secure my pinky. It's because of the swell/thickness of the grip. It is a lot thicker than the Eagle Secret Service Grips.

It does not hurt my hand at all. None of my wood grips hurt my hand. The only thing that hurts is my trigger finger when shooting my J Frames.

I recently installed these Hogue Tamers; they're built specifically for the centennial frame--covering the entire backstrap. They also extend 0.41" below the frame to make room for a pinky. Makes for a very ergonomic grip that is easy to shoot with (this target was 10 rounds of Gold Dot 135 +P at 7 yards, offhand.)

They are very comfortable. The only problem with an all rubber grip is that they stick to your shirt. I carry IWB and all rubber grips stick to my shirt and expose the piece. Happens all the time. That's why I prefer wood.

Mine has the Hogue Tamer grips with the soft recoil pad in the backstrap. I highly suggest these grips for anyone who wants their pinky finger on the grip and who may be sensitive to recoil. It does not print as you think it would.
