Coach: Why am I Shooting Low and Right? (Lefty)

Llando,

I really like that 25 yard target. Sure, the group is large, but the average is centered.

The closer target is similar to one you posted before. You've gone from low/right to high/right. This alone validates what we've been talking about; the shooter changed not the gun.

Have you considered upgrading your trigger?

Rastoff - Thanks. That means a lot.

Well, I'm using an Apex DCAEK and poly trigger right now. I like it over the stock curved trigger.

Yes, I find it interesting that the same gun, same ammo now shoots about four inches high relative to where I was at before lol - as I suspected when I started, "it ain't the gun." :)

Quick update.

Been doing a bit of dry fire lately, quite a bit actually.

About 15 minutes every night, whenever possible. I vary the routine; sometimes draw and press out, sometimes closing my eyes and slowing down, focusing on the trigger.

I feel like it's helping. Today I stopped by the range, with group pictured, at 7 yards.

Had some flyers I knew right away that I called, but the rest of the rounds are grouping nicely. Pretty happy.

Gun still hitting high; about 3". Pretty sure it's the Trijicon Sights. The circled 'X' was POA.

Aim of the day was to make sure the gun ran ok before class tomorrow. (Taking an 8 hour USPSA - style action pistol course Saturday.)

From today's set at the range, 15 rounds, 7 yards, 124 gr Remington Golden Saber.

I'd guess the improvement is due to a lot of dry fire, plus switching out of the Trijicon HDs for the stock rear and a 10 8 FO front. And probably using some decent ammo lol.

Note this group POI is almost POA in terms of elevation. Still have a long way to get to a 1" group at 7 yards, but I appear to be bracketing the target at least now.

I no longer have the Apex trigger, as it is not legal for USPSA Production, which I am going to start this fall.

The strong hand just barely grip the pistol. The off hand is the hand that grips the pistol to keep it from falling out of your hands and controll most of the recoil. Use the pad of your index finger on the trigger and press straight back.

The FSS isn't legal, but the DCAEK is. The difference is that the DCAEK keeps the stock trigger. Therefore, there are no visible alterations to the gun, but you still get the better sear.

Got it, thanks Rastoff. I don't mind having the stock trigger back in; there is a big difference with just the Apex USB and sear.

I mean, the Apex poly trigger was great, but I'd forgo it next time for just the DCAEK.

So both the Apex poly trigger and the Trijicon HD night sights will be up for sale here shortly.

Another thought about that Llando. Just ignore the USPSA requirements as they apply to you. Sure, it will put you in a different class, but so what? You're doing it for fun and learning. You may not win your class, but you'll gain a lot of experience.

Personally, I don't care what class they put me in. I use my carry gun and ammo. I use a few extra mags because of the required number of shots. The rest I do exactly as I carry. I don't care what class they put me in or my time/score. I work on my fundamentals with time pressure. This is what will help me should I need it on the street.

So, if you like your gun with the Apex stuff in it, just press on and use it. Don't sweat the classification.

Rastoff, all good points.

I thought about this for a while, and decided that, as long as there was no huge negative difference with the stock trigger, I'd try to stick with Production instead of moving to Limited.

For me, just starting out, I'd like to see where I stack up with similar people with similar equipment, I.e. Production.

To me, if the Apex Poly trigger and DCAEK are an improvement together, then the Poly trigger represents about 20%, in my opinion, of that change. Hence, to me, removing the Poly trigger is not that big a change.

Since I had chance to feel the gun stock and with the DCAEK back to back over 1 day, the DCAEK is much better value for money vs. the DCAEK plus the poly trigger (to me, your mileage may vary of course).

Not saying the Apex trigger is not noticeable, it is. But for me, the incremental difference plus the fact that it puts me out of Production was not where I wanted to be.

It is entirely possible that with a new gun, the difference might be more. I have almost 2,000 rounds through mine now, so things would have probably smoothed regardless.

Definitely feel like I am headed in the right direction now.

Pretty happy with the stock rear blacked out with the new 10 8 FO front sight. Very easy to pick up, even indoors at the range.

Quick update, still making progress. Switched to the Small backstrap for an evaluation.

Shot this group of 10 at 25 yards, Speer GD HP 124 gr standard pressure round. 70-0X on the B-8, personal best.

Thought I would update this thread with and example of where I am at the moment.

Yesterday I shot a 100-6X at three yards standing two handed unsupported. Overall, I'm much happier with these results over some of my earlier sessions. This was with my HK VP9.

I'm back to doing regular dry fire, and it is helping a lot in steadying the pistol.
