I was at Dicks (Georgia) on Tuesday. There was no one at the gun counter. Self serve right? So I served myself 5 bricks of CCI Standard, paid for it at the register with who appeared to be the most disinterested cashier ($39 per) and left.

In Georgia you are supposed to be well armed. Unlike my home state of NJ.

Now I do most of my buying, selling and trading in supermarket parking lots. No Bill of Sale or ID Check. I can't believe Georgia and NJ are in the same country. Yet last I checked Georgia does not have more gun crime than NJ. That makes zero sense right? !!!!!!

Here in northern Commiefornia Wally World still doesn't have 22lr on the shelves so what I would get asked for has never come up. A recent court decision may do away with the 10 day waiting period for those of us who already own a gun or have a ccw permit.

I'm sure you already now the reason (well one of the major reasons) for that but I will say this for those that might not get it...

Stupid gun laws that restrict the ability for people to defend themselves ONLY work in keeping guns out of the hands of legal and law abiding people. Laws, statutes, and regulations don't work on criminals. All these laws accomplish is preventing people from having the option of defending themselves.

That is exactly what it means. I ran into this in Massachusetts.
Couldn't buy ammo reloading supplies or even dies. The clerk had to check with the Manager at Bass Pro before they would sell me a reloading manual. Hand to God it's the truth. I'm staying in Ohio...

Oh, I believe it. Welcome to the People's Republic of Taxachusetts! We always have to show an FID or LTC here behind enemy lines to buy ammo. Out of state folks... they can't buy any at all.

Walmart checks and so does Bass Pro... but only Dicks records the information off your gun license. Very irritating but if you want those precious .22 LR rounds, you have to do it.

The Dick's near me in the Volksrepublik Maryland doesn't stop anywhere near taking driver's license info just for ammo. The last time (very last time) I went there and tried to buy an EMPTY ammo storage box, they wanted my DL - store policy because sometimes the boxes are sold filled with ammo. Huh? Manager backed up the checker, I walked out w/o the box, haven't been there since. Dick's is named Dick's for a reason.

As an Illinois resident, if you wish to be a gun owner or ammo purchaser, you must apply for a Firearm Owner Identification Card which looks sort of like a Driver's license. You fill out a form which is similar to a 4473 and wait 30-90 days for the card. It costs $10 and is good for 10 years. It is required to own guns, purchase guns and purchase ammo. There is a waiting period on all gun purchases and the law requires a "phone in" on all gun purchases including private sales. The FOID card has been a requirement since, I believe, the late 1960's.

I visited the local Dick's on Saturday and saw that they had 22LR in stock. Picked up 3 boxes and went to pay for them. Like normal they asked me for my Firearms Owner Identification Card (FOID). The cashier then entered the complete card ID into the register database. I had him call the manager, the woman that showed up confirmed that a "government agency" has asked them to keep the information. I asked which agency and she refused to answer. I called their customer service number on Tuesday and they also refused to say which agency. If come from out of state they will track your driver's license number.

Normally I would not care I do not have anything to hide but with all the issues with retailers having security breaches I do not want some felon finding out I own guns and visiting my house. If you think your information is safe just remember HomeDepot had a major breach this weekend.

Please spread the word to other sport forums. Dick's may have good intentions but the road to Hell is still out there.

Dick's is collecting every bit of information on its customers it can. They are doing similar things here in Texas. The very reason I don't do business with them.

There is no Gov't agency tracking ammo sales. The woman is full of it and is surely repeating what some clown told her. Many retail cos. want personal info to better serve their customers through advertising such as when then want demographical info, e.g., phone and/or zip code. It's optional for the customer and at least one state has made it illegal to ask.

It's ironic that people who see the disaster that is Obamacare, which is managed by idiots, believe that the Gov't hires geniuses to run the ATF. Please.

Dicks in NY also requires that you show driver's license for non-pistol ammo, and records the info. In NY they say it is store policy. For pistol ammo you need to show NY state pistol permit.

thank god I moved to WA state. you pays your money and takes your ammo.

Every time I hear about something like this, it makes me that much more glad I live where I do.
Down here in GA, the most that will happen is that they will check your ID (drivers license or whatever you have) just to see that you're old enough to be buying the ammo (not in my case however, because the gray hair is a dead giveaway) and ask if it's for a rifle or pistol.
I'm not sure of the reasoning behind that question but, there it is.

It is only the chains that do this. The small lgs's might ask to see your FOID, but most don't.

they copy all your carry info into their database, I no longer shop there of course this is the commie state of Mass. LGS only has to see your license no coppiny of any info. all this just for ammo sales

Had the same experience at the Dick's in Niles Il. just north of Chicago. The check out clerk logs in your FOID number and asks if the ammo ( if 22lr) is to be used in a rifle or pistol. You aer also asked if you are a citizen.
I mainly shop a Cabelas where they ask no questions but do check your FOID card. That's state law. Also, any other gun shop or range will ask for a FOID.

I'm not sure of the reasoning behind that question but, there it is.

In Ohio, you can purchase a rifle and rifle ammunition when you're 18 but you have to be 21 to purchase a handgun and handgun ammo.

So when I ask the kid if his 22lr ammo purchase is for a handgun or a rifle and he looks at me like I must be from Mars, I tell him why.

Funny thing is, it's ALWAYS for a rifle.
