Heh heh, been there and done that. I livedon frozen burritos, corndogs and tater tots when I was in College. Oh and-cheap pizza too from CICIs Pizza.

Canned tamales are pretty grim: they will probably sustain life but not by much.

Sometimes missing a meal isn't so bad. Especially given the alternative.

Ill eat bread soaked in drano--beforeI try those tamales again.

If I recall?HEB is for: Harold Edward Butts. They got their start here in Texas. We had both an HEB and Kroger in those days. I liked Krogers much better--but they were across town--HEBs was 7 blocks away.

I'm not a picky eater. I don't think I've ever tried the canned kind, and doubt I ever will. I don't even care for the real ones, and I live in the land of people going door to door, business to business hawking home made tamales.
Just never have cared for them.

Heh heh,ive never had Wiernerschnitzel in a can yet--and I saw that when I was in Konstanz Germany.The fruitcake actually was pretty good.Had cranberries, raisens, nuts, cherries and I forget what else? However, the size cake I got was a 3 servings cake.I had enough to ast me at least another 10 years.

Two items, that for years, I have said I would never buy are canned tamales and canned potatoes. I have a friend whose mother would serve canned tamales, and to this day, he won't even look at good tamales. Potatoes, c'mon man. Frozen, maybe so, canned never.

Heh heh, I learned my lesson. Also, anyone want a free can of tamales to use for target practice?Just pay the S&H an its yours...

I don't even know what a tamale is, and now I know better than to try one if ever offered one. But then again, people that never had hog maw don't know what they're missing. Or, monkey meat on a stick, yum yum.

Man, man, man, Ringo I can't believe you fell for the old canned tamales trick. Then of all things you followed it up with fruitcake. Sounds to me like you were on the path of stomach destruction if I was guessing. Oh, I believe you said it was not kind to your stomach and I can see why with all that and then "fruitcake" on top of it. Have a good Thanksgiving.

I learned that lesson many years ago. We love tamales with taco salad and I was unable to find any fresh so I though how bad can the canned version be, after all they ARE still tamales right?

WRONG!!!

Since then when I can't get fresh I have Chinese food and do the Mexican food later.....

I remember about 10 years back there was an old green panel truck that would park on the side of HWY 225 in front of the Shell Plant. It was an elderly Mexican couple that was selling the tamales they made at home. I was reluctant to get them for obvious reasons. One night I was on Graveyards and I was desperate for some fresh tamales so I decide to take a chance. They were FAAAAABULOUS!!! Best I ever had even in Mexico. They made chicken and beef and you could get either in regular or spicy.

I got up the next day I went by there and bought all they had of every kind and put 'em in the freezer. Buy the time I used 'em up (which wasn't very long) they weren't there any more. I never saw them again. Sigh............

Heh heh, we had canned chinese food too--only when I was younger--we had no chinese restaurants in town at the time. Now--they are like Circle Ks (Stripes) and are aplenty.

BTW--HEBs does make great tamales. Pork, Chicken,Beef and Bean. All aregood but bean is my least fave.

Was the store all out of Chef Boyardee Beef Raviolis? This time of year, I miss living on the border and getting those homemade tamales made from venison and or pork. When my wife and her friend didn't feel like making them, we'd buy them for a buck a dozen. They heat up in the microwave just fine.

Not sure if they were outof those but--Im not much of a canned pasta fan--too processed.

Dang, Ringo! I'm slightly nauseous just reading your description. Glad you pulled through! They say that moistening the toilet paper slightly relieves some of the irritation to the, ah, affected areas from overuse.

Where do you find fresh made tamales today??

I used to get them all the time when I was a kid in Missouri...a man walked the streets with a hand cart selling "hot tamales"....

I found a woman in SoCal about 10 years ago who delivered to a car place!

Used to have a neighbor in Santa Clara who was always bringing over a big platter of various flavors of home made tamales....hmmm hmmm good.

Dang, now I'm hungry................

If you have an HEBs anywhere near you?they sell themb the dozen--for about $5-$6 bucks. If I could ship you some?you'd like those well enough.

Next time just get the fresh made bean ones then. I've personally never have had bean tamales, and am always surprised to hear the different varieties. I do not like sweet tamales. Anyways, I also have personally never seen canned tamales myself, but I am not surprised.

ElPaso should have an HEBs there-try theirs--not great but not bad.I like the beef nes the best/

Totally agree with you. Tried Hormel brand one time and will never make that mistake again.

Other than corned beef hash, Hormel ANYTHING is vile.

Giant Eagle has stopped carrying Wolf Chili with beans, and doesn't have much of the no beans stuff, which I won't eat.

Most of what they have is Hormel, which is 100% pure grease. I wouldn't lube the roadwheels of an M113 with that swill.

I can see you have never tasted C-rations if you had you would know better then to eat canned anything.

Heh heh, thats another thing imintensly listening toyou Vets on is talk about c-rations.I thought about trying new made c-rats--but-think illpasson them.I wanted to see what you all had to endure--but i dont think my stoach is up to possible torture?

Gee, I'm glad I didn't grow up with a name like Harry Butts.
One of the better emergency bachelor eats I know of is canned biscuits. A little butter, a little jelly, you're good. For a deluxe snack spread deviled ham on the biscuits before cooking, then in the last minute, put a piece of cheese on top of each. Bon appetit!
