A little advice?

hey guys! I just bought my S&W MP 15-22 yesterday, ive been through about 300 rounds so far, cleaned already twice! Ive been doing some research, and ive read a common problem (i guess you can say) is mis-firing. Im very new to guns, and just learning..So my question is, IF it does mis-fire what would be the corrective and most safest action to fixing it?

Ammo could be your issue

Over lubing can gum things up, with 22 being so dirty

Misfires in .22 are common and not usually a sign of a problem with the gun. Some brands of ammo are famous for it (Golden Bullet/Thunderbolt, I'm looking at you), others it's pretty rare (CCI).

If you have a misfire make sure you know how to handle it safely (muzzle downrange for thirty seconds before cycling action, dispose of round properly) and then keep shooting.

When I have a Failure to Fire (misfire), I eject the round immediately. If you want to wait 30 seconds before ejecting, that's probably the SAFEST thing to do (as stated earlier), but I'm guessing that the 30 second rule is more for black powder applications or larger caliber rounds or machine guns and less so with rimfire ammo . The purpose for waiting for 30 seconds is to differentiate between a 'failure to fire' and a 'hang fire', which have the same initial conditions (trigger is pulled, but the primer and/or powder fails to ignite).

When you eject the round, inspect it to make sure that there was a good strike on the rim. A poor strike could indicate an issue with the gun. If you choose, you can try to re-fire the round (let the firing pin strike in a different location). It may go 'bang', it may not. You can also try firing it in another gun. Or you can toss it. I generally try 3 times before I consider the round a 'dud'.

A failure to fire is a very, very rare occurrence for me when shooting with the 16" barrel. I can go over 1000 rounds without having such a failure. I do use good ammo, CCI Standard Velocity & Norma Tac-22, plus I use a CMC trigger that hits real hard.

I have read here of folks having issues with the J spring in the stock trigger group. A sign of this is the hammer and/or trigger pins walking, which affects the hammer striking properly. If one were having a failure to fire, I'd make sure your pins are flush & not moving on you.

This caused me to research this a bit. The link below has a few videos of hangfire & squibs. Also read elsewhere a hangfire can occasionally happen with 22lr. Guess I need to remember the 30 second rule.

It is funny, my 15-22 has zero issues with Golden Bullets. Lucky I guess.

I would add to the aforementioned problems, with that of making sure your rounds are staggered in the magazine properly...I used to experience a few FTF's, I changed ammo and that all stopped...I still get the odd one or two (usually in comps typically ) but there is always a good clean strike on the rim and they have always fired second time round. For me what used to be a really annoying problem with FTF's was solved with a change in ammo. That and a BAD lever made dealing with the situation much more fun I would doubt that the problem lies with the rifle and more with the ammo, but checking and cleaning your bolt on a regular basis I considered is good practice to get into.

The original Golden bullets were not very reliable but the "New and Improved" Golden bullets work very will. I think I am getting less than 1 out of 100 that has an issue.

Thanks for all the tips! Ive been doing alot of video watching and research! Im loving my 15-22 so far! Im going again this weekend for more shooting. The Range officer is gonna help me, until i get familiar with issues on my own

I find that there is 1 in 5 or less that have bullets that are loose in their case. Dont know how you feel about that. I found that with these loose bullets the chance they jammed/bent going in the chamber was high.
