What's a NIB S&W Highway Patrolman worth? The seller is asking $800 firm.

There is a local who has a NIB S&W Highway Patrolman. The gun is new in box and still wrapped in the oil paper wrap with the cleaning accessories. He is asking $800. What's it worth? Here is a pic.

He is local to me and is willing to deal FTF. I just wanted to know the value of it before I committed.

IMHO, I would buy that in a NY min. IF I was a collector. IF you are a collector and not a shooter, then you ought to also. IF you are wanting a shooter M 28 then pass on it and let a collector have it. ....... Big Cholla

I just want it to stick in the safe for my daughter. Hopefully I will have a nice collection to hand down to her. I don't intend on shooting it.

I just paid $525 for a shooter - NOT NIB with tools and paperwork. I think its a very fair price. Like as been said, I would keep it as new, and spend less for a clean shooter. I believe the last in the series of the model 28 was the dash 3, which was not P&R. The rest are. The one you at looking at appears to be a N serial number prefix, dash 2. The earlier guns with the S prefix had diamond checkered grips.

I think for $800, I'd want to make sure the box is original and that the label matches the gun.

Punisher0822, if you want a great investment for your daughter invest in mutual-funds or an annuity fund. If you want a great revolver at a good price buy the M-28 you are looking at. And yes this would be a pinned and recessed model.

I am looking at a Model 28-2 in 4 inch that has been reblued and the seller started out at 550 and is now down to 490. So I think your like new with all the accoutrements might be a bit high, but how often do you have the option of looking the gun over and handling it before you buy......always negotiate you never know if they will take it. What old bear said.I'm a believer in index funds.Easy in /easy out..that's not always the case with firearms,especially handguns where you need to involve an FFL to sell them.
Forget the investment aspect-that shouldn't be the primary reason for buying a gun.
You didn't mention anything about your daughter.Don't buy it because you hope that she may have a gun interest in the future.If she doesn't have the interest now,you're not doing her any favors.

NIB is only worth spending the extra $$$ if you intend to keep it NIB and it is indubitably verified as NIB.

HP's do seem to be climbing in price slow but sure as many folks here have observed. But if there is any question about it being truly NIB, it is about $100-$200 too much IMHO.

I sold a NIB just like that about 5 months ago. Listed it for $750 and it sold in less than 6 hours without any adjustment to the price. i wasn't going to budge on the price anyway.
If you want a new solid shooter buy it!!! Where are you going to find anything better for less money? It isn't like you are going to be violating a priceless one of a kind specimen. 28-2's are not scarce.
If you want a safe queen, buy it!!
