The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges

,1969--1972 N1 to N100000

1973 N1000000 up

1974--1977 N200000

1975--1976 N300000

1977--1978 N400000

1978--1980 N500000

1979--1980 N600000

1980-- N700000

1980--1983 N800000

1982--1986 N900000

N97xxxx being the highest known 1986

This doesn't make sense to me. N20000 goes from 1974-1977 but N40000 goes from 1977-1978? My serial number is N258### how do I know the exact year it was made?

You don't, without a letter.
Only a letter from Mr Jinks will tell you when it was shipped out.
They weren't shipped "in order".

1959 Model 28 No Dash

Love these HPs. I think I'm starting to like them better than my 27s.

This is my latest. A 1959 4 screw Model 28 No Dash with 4 inch barrel.
Note the target hammer and trigger along with the walnut diamond target grips.
If you're going to have one, you might as well have one fully loaded(pardon the pun):)

Adding my Highway Patrolman to the list...

Here is my 6" 28-2. Picked it up last week. Stocks are not original, but the gun looks so much better with these than with the Hogue grips that came on it from the previous owner. This is my first of many S&W revolvers. Serial number is N274,xxx

Ok, I'm in. Just purchased a Model 28, 4" S.F.P.D.

It's consignment, so I have to wait a few weeks, then I can DROS and I have to wait another 10 days.

I called the gun store and they said the S/N is N184XX, so I guess that makes mine a '69-72. I'll paper it when I get it.

In the meantime, I'm stoked! I just scored a original Hoyt holster marked "357 HP4 S.F.P.D." to go with it.

My 28-2 came with an old Safariland flap holster. Tan color with a greenish looking lining.
Marked for S&W Large or something like that.
I can't find any information about it on the web.
Anyone know of these?

You can tell it's held Magna stocked Highway Patrolman in it for quite some time!

Thanks samandglove1 and 19leben. Based on some of the other posts, my guess is that it is a May-54 DOB. I need to get it and a few others lettered.

Here is another pic of the 5-screw with my 28-2 (S/N N2752**).

Nice 5-screw Trafficboss! I need to find one of those! Like the grips, too......

HP S1335xx

Followed me home. A 4", and it goes quite nicely with my 6" that was manufactured 1200 frames later (maybe!). It's sure not perfect, some freckling and theres a ding about a half inch from the end of the barrel on the right side. The worst of it is that PJ Anderson electropenciled his name on the left side of the frame. Still, it was a fair price for what it was.

I'm having trouble postin pics right now but I'll get some up soon.

I'm looking at a 28-2 6" blued at a local gun store, Serial #N530086. It is a pinned barrel but is not a recessed cylinder. Is this possible or could the cylinder be from a later 28? I'm considering it for a shooter since it has two small scratches on the left side of the barrel near the frame. The chambers and bore are in excellent shape as is the action.

It's most likely a replacement cylinder. The non recessed cylinder didn't come about on the N frame till the -3, around 1983.
The 28-2 you're looking at was manufactured sometime in 1978.
How much is the asking price?

Asking price is $599. A non-original cylinder wouldn't be a big deal to me provided the gun shoots well and the price is more negotiable.
