It's most likely a replacement cylinder. The non recessed cylinder didn't come about on the N frame till the -3, around 1983.I'm looking at a 28-2 6" blued at a local gun store, Serial #N530086. It is a pinned barrel but is not a recessed cylinder. Is this possible or could the cylinder be from a later 28? I'm considering it for a shooter since it has two small scratches on the left side of the barrel near the frame. The chambers and bore are in excellent shape as is the action.
Asking price is $599. A non-original cylinder wouldn't be a big deal to me provided the gun shoots well and the price is more negotiable.
Wolfman yours was manufactured sometime late 1961.Hi I have a Model 28-2 Serial #S222350.
Hi I have a Model 28-2 Serial #S222350.
Thanks for the responses! I went to look at this 28-2 again. My apologies for some wrong information in my post (big face palm). This gun does in fact have a recessed cylinder. They were asking $599, I offered $550 and they countered with $570. So I bought it and am on a hold till Thursday morning at the latest. I think it sat around for almost 10 days at the store because an old model 28 is neither stainless, real shiny nor an automatic. Not very glamorous looking in a case full of newer, snazzier guns. It does need a thorough cleaning which I'm looking forward to doing. I think the lighter barrel is maybe easier handling than my new 586-6 6". This is only the second used gun I've ever bought. If it shoots as accurately as my 586, I'll be happy, and on the lookout for maybe a 4" 28.
Ok, I'm in. Just purchased a Model 28, 4" S.F.P.D.

It's consignment, so I have to wait a few weeks, then I can DROS and I have to wait another 10 days.
I called the gun store and they said the S/N is N184XX, so I guess that makes mine a '69-72. I'll paper it when I get it.
In the meantime, I'm stoked! I just scored a original Hoyt holster marked "357 HP4 S.F.P.D." to go with it.
