Windows 10!

Just thought I'd let you know Windows 10 looks like another MS disaster. I just spent the morning recovering my 1 year old laptop from the completely dysfunctional state that resulted when I installed the free Windows 10 update. Couldn't get any help from MS. Hour and a half wait time on the help line. Don't do it. I suspect the horror stories will be hitting the media soon and MS will be pulling the update.

My son does desktop support for a company that builds displays for trade shows. He loaded 10 on a company pc with no problems. After testing for 3 days, he could find no problems. He is going to load it to one of his own pc's this weekend.

My desktop works fine with 10. My laptop did not and I had to roll back to 7.

I've been running it for a week or so and I like it. It seems faster than W7. Install went flawlessly, took about 1 1/2 hours. I just removed W7 so no going back. Microsoft Edge seems faster too.

It works. No issues upgrading beyond having to reload my security suite. All other programs and materials transferred smoothly. And looking at reviews in computer magazines and such, all "critical" reviews immediately descend into computer babble about features and issues that "normal" users like me don't understand; a good sign, because that means there aren't any significant problems so far.

I'm still running Windows XP. It's always worked, and it still works. Why change?

I am an MCSE. For anyone who isn't familiar with that acronym it stands for Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer. It is basically equivalent to a 2-year PC and Networking degree with heavy emphasis on using and supporting Microsoft products.

Two principles I learned years ago that I always follow.
1) Stay at least 1 generation behind the bleeding edge with MS operating systems. Let the early adopters deal with all the headaches and heartaches of the "latest & greatest" from Redmond.
2) DO NOT install a new OS on a proprietary system (all laptops are proprietary systems) unless the system is a major brand name (i.e. Dell, Gateway, Toshiba, Asus, etc.) AND the installation/update software package comes directly from the manufacturer and is for the EXACT system you are upgrading.

Anything else is a recipe for disaster and massive doses of frustration.
I don't need that kind of aggravation. I get all of that I need from my kids...

10 is working smoothly for me on a three year old i7 desktop. I don't think I would upgrade a laptop, though. As mentioned above you will most likely experience major headaches with hardware drivers on a laptop since they are all so different.

Over several days now I haven't experienced a single crash. I did not have to reinstall any software. Everything just works.

I did go through all the settings with a fine toothed comb and turned off all the data sharing and feedback options for enhanced privacy. One big update has already been installed via Windows update. I didn't go through it to see what it changed, but I haven't noticed anything obviously better or worse since it was installed.

I will probably play around with the Edge browser eventually, but for now I'm sticking with the 64bit beta of Firefox. I prefer that over Chrome or IE.

I had Classic Shell installed in 8.1 to give me a start menu and avoid the "Metro" (tiled) interface. Don't need it anymore. I have customized 10s start menu to remove the tiled part and shrunk it to a single column. I like it so far. I really do.

I also have another computer which hasn't been degraded yet.

Always have a plan B.

Took the bull by the horns and upgraded my Windows 7 home built desktop yesterday. Took about 40 minutes to install on the SSD. It's working great so far.

Your way behind the times. XP was a disaster compared to windows 2000. It drove me to Linux and I never looked back.

I upgraded from 8.1 to 10 with no problems (yet), I truly hate 8.1. This upgrade was on a laptop bought 2 months ago which came pre-installed with 8.1, Vista was better than 8.1 and that was the bottom of the barrel as far as I'm concerned. No more "charms bar" hooray.

I bought a new laptop and upgraded to Win 10 as soon as I plugged it in. It has been working well for the last week. It took a little bit of time to get used to the new system, coming from old XP and LINUX system, but it's not to bad and I'm sure as I get more familiar with where the advanced features are located it will become even easier. I'm just happy to have completely bypassed the disaster that is Windows 8.
